Chapter 2

"Are you waiting for someone?" I asked.

The little girl sat alone on the freezing metal bench of the Seattle bus terminal. Her thin, oversized denim jacket offered zero protection against the biting coastal wind. She gripped a battered pink backpack tight against her chest, her small knuckles turning white.

"My mom said to stay right here," she mumbled. Her chin trembled as she stared at her worn-out sneakers. "She went to buy our tickets."

"How long ago was that?"

"Yesterday morning."

My chest seized. I knelt to her eye level, ignoring the damp concrete seeping into my jeans. "What is your name?"

"Maya."

"I'm Clara. Let's get you something warm to eat, Maya."

I bought her a grilled cheese sandwich and a hot cocoa from the terminal kiosk. We waited by the station manager’s office. Hours bled into the evening. No mother appeared. When the local police finally arrived with a social worker in tow, Maya panicked. She dropped her cup, spilling brown liquid across the floor, and hid behind my legs.

"Please don't let them take me," she cried, burying her face in my coat.

"We need to process her at the county shelter, ma'am," the officer said, stepping forward.

"No," I argued, shielding her small frame. "She's terrified. Look at her."

"You can't just take a stray kid home," the social worker sighed. "There are rules."

"Then I'll foster her," I fired back. "Give me the paperwork. I have a clean record, and I just finalized my divorce. I have nothing but time."

Three months later, I sat in a brightly lit lawyer's office in Vermont. My grandmother had left me a quiet, sprawling house at the edge of town, surrounded by pine trees. It was the perfect place to start over.

The judge stamped the final page of the adoption decree.

"She's officially yours, Ms. Mercer," the judge said, handing me the folder.

"Just Clara," I corrected him.

Maya tugged at my sleeve as we walked out of the courthouse. "Does this mean you're my real mom now?"

"Only if you want me to be," I said.

Maya wrapped her arms around my waist, squeezing tight. "I want you."

The warmth in her voice sent a rush of emotion to my throat. I blinked away the moisture and hugged her back.

Later that afternoon, I stood at the kitchen island, chopping carrots for a stew. Maya walked in, carrying a neatly folded stack of towels.

"Mommy, I finished folding the laundry," she said, setting them carefully on a chair.

"Thank you, sweetie," I said, putting the knife down. "You didn't have to do that. You can go play."

"I like helping you," she replied, offering a bright, gap-toothed smile.

I watched her skip into the living room. A sharp pang hit my ribs.

Maya never demanded expensive toys. She never yelled when I asked her to do her chores. My mind drifted back to the hollow mansion I left behind. To Leo.

*Sign it. You're always so mean.*

Leo never folded a towel in his life. Last Christmas, he threw a glass ornament at the wall because I bought him the wrong video game console. *If you don't buy the right one tomorrow,* he had threatened, *I'll tell Aunt Serena you hit me.*

I gripped the edge of the marble counter, steadying myself. I had spent ten years pouring my soul into a cracked vase, begging for a single drop of affection from a boy who hated me. Now, I was nurturing a child who actually loved me back.

My phone buzzed, vibrating violently against the wood.

Julian’s name flashed across the screen.

I stared at the letters for a long moment before swiping the green icon. "What do you want?"

"Where are my ruby cufflinks?" Julian demanded.

No greeting. No asking how I was. Just an order.

"Why would I know?" I asked, keeping my tone entirely flat.

"You packed my suits last month before you threw your little tantrum and left. I have a board meeting in an hour."

"Top drawer of the mahogany dresser," I replied.

"I checked there."

"Look inside the black velvet box underneath your watches."

Silence stretched over the line. I heard the faint sound of a drawer sliding open on his end. "They aren't here, Clara. Stop playing games."

"Check the wall safe, then."

"Why would they be in the safe?" he snapped.

"Because Serena wore them as earrings as a joke at your last dinner party, and locked them in there. Remember?"

Julian paused. The line went dead quiet. "Right."

"Did you find them?"

"Yes." He cleared his throat. The arrogance returned to his voice. "When are you coming by to clear out the rest of your closet? Serena needs the space for her winter coats."

"Throw my things away," I said.

"Be reasonable, Clara. Those dresses cost thousands. I don't have time to deal with your mess."

"Hire a maid. We are divorced, Julian. Do not call me again."

"You're still playing this victim card?" he scoffed. "You'll be crawling back when your bank account runs dry. You have no idea how the real world works."

"Goodbye, Julian."

I tapped the red button. I opened his contact profile and hit block.

That night, a heavy rainstorm lashed against my bedroom window. I tossed under the quilt, trapped in a decade-old memory I couldn't escape.

"Don't leave," Julian muttered.

He lay heavy on the mattress of his college apartment, reeking of cheap bourbon. I dragged his shoes off, my twenty-year-old hands shaking with the effort.

"I'm just getting you some water," I whispered.

He yanked my wrist. I crashed against his chest. The room spun as he rolled over, pinning me into the tangled sheets. His lips found mine, frantic and desperate.

"I missed you," he slurred against my mouth.

I surrendered completely. I thought I was healing his broken heart. I thought my blind devotion would finally make him notice me.

Then, he buried his face in my neck.

"Serena," he breathed.

I jolted awake.

My heart hammered aggressively against my ribs. The cottage was dark and silent, save for the rain hitting the glass. I sat up, dragging a shaking hand down my sweaty face.

Ten years of self-deception. I had convinced myself Julian was simply a stoic, emotionally distant man. I made excuses for his cold stares, his late nights at the office, his absolute indifference to my pain. I told myself it was just his nature.

He wasn't incapable of love. He just never loved me. I was a placeholder. A convenient shadow to keep his bed warm while he waited for his true love to return.

The screen of my phone lit up on the nightstand, cutting through the darkness.

*Unknown Number.*

The same caller from outside the lawyer's office two months ago. The one I had ignored ever since I moved.

I grabbed the phone and swiped the glass. "Who is this?"

"You finally blocked him," the deep voice murmured. "Congratulations on taking the first step."

"How do you know that?" I demanded, my grip tightening on the device. "Who are you?"

"Someone who hates Julian Mercer as much as you do."

"I'm not playing games with strangers. Don't call this number again."

"Wait," the man ordered. His tone shifted, sharpening into something lethal. "Check the email I just sent you."

"Why would I do that?"

"Because it contains the police report from the car crash that killed your parents twelve years ago," he said. "Julian didn't pull them from the wreckage, Clara. He ran them off the road."
