My Sister's Ex Quarterback Became My Biggest Scandal Novel Cover

My Sister's Ex Quarterback Became My Biggest Scandal

I built my entire internship around a single mission: prove that Weston Cade destroyed my sister Claire's sports media career. Four years after their breakup, she lost everything while he kept winning. But shadowing him for a documentary reveals a man who shields my reporting at his own expense. A buried voicemail suggests Claire begged him to deny their relationship. Then our photos leak, and history repeats—with me as the scandal. This time, I refuse to let anyone blame the wrong Bennett sister.

Chapter 2

"You don't get to call this a documentary."

Weston's voice blasted from my phone speaker, cutting off my own voice mid-sentence.

The Fourth Quarter Media logo flashed across the screen. Fifteen seconds. That was all it took for the network to compress yesterday’s confrontation into a viral teaser. They had positioned my question about Claire right against Weston’s coldest response, framing me as a revenge-fueled sister challenging a ruthless quarterback.

"Pull the video, Nadia," I demanded, staring at the screen while standing in the training facility parking lot.

"I can't," Nadia replied over the line.

"You're the supervising editor."

"Grant bypassed me. He approved the cut at midnight." Nadia’s voice dropped, carrying a sharp edge. "If you quit now, the industry won't remember you as a victim. They'll remember the intern who brought a personal vendetta to a national broadcast, threw a tantrum when it got views, and walked out."

I ended the call and shoved the phone into my jacket pocket.

Tessa Hall waited just inside the glass doors of the facility. She held a clipboard against her chest like a shield.

"Hand over the badge, Bennett," Tessa said. "Your network violated our trust before breakfast. I am revoking your locker room and field access."

"I didn't edit that clip."

"You provided the footage," Tessa shot back. "We agreed to a sports feature, not a soap opera."

I reached for the lanyard, the plastic suddenly heavy against my neck. If I lost access on day two, Grant won. He would fire me for breach of contract and replace me with someone who would gladly ambush Weston every day.

A hand clamped down on the edge of Tessa's clipboard.

Weston stood beside her. He wore his practice jersey, a towel draped over his shoulder. He didn't look at me.

"She didn't cut the video," Weston said.

Tessa bristled. "Weston, she is a liability. The teaser is trending."

"And the network chopped it up." Weston pulled a stapled packet from his gym bag and tossed it onto the reception desk. "Restrict the platform's final cut rights. Keep the reporter."

He tapped the top page of the packet. "Sign it, Riley."

I stepped forward and scanned the bold print.

Item 4: No background footage of medical areas.

Item 5: Controversial interview segments must retain full, unedited context.

Item 6: No unauthorized recording of off-the-record conversations.

My jaw tightened. Four years ago, the tabloids ran a smear campaign claiming Claire used hidden recorders to bait players into giving up locker room secrets. It was the rumor that finally destroyed her credibility.

I grabbed a pen from the desk and threw it back down. "Are you using my sister's rumors to humiliate me?"

Weston finally met my eyes. "Read the paper."

"I read it. You think I'm going to wiretap you?"

"I'm not reminding you of what she did," he said, his voice dropping to that flat, exhausted register from yesterday. "I'm telling you why I'm still letting you stay."

He turned to Tessa. "The rules are set. Let her work."

Weston walked through the double doors toward the locker room. I picked up the pen and signed my name on the dotted line. Tessa snatched the packet away, glaring at my signature as if it were a forgery.

"One slip," Tessa warned. "Just one."

By three o'clock, the afternoon sun baked the practice turf. Whistles blew in sharp bursts.

Rookie receiver Miller caught a slant pass across the middle. A linebacker closed the gap, and helmet cracked against helmet with a sickening pop. Miller hit the grass hard.

He didn't bounce back up. When he finally stood, he staggered, swaying blindly toward the wrong sideline.

Dave hoisted the heavy camera rig onto his shoulder, zooming in on the medical staff rushing the field.

"Pan left," I ordered.

Dave kept the lens trained on Miller. "He's wobbling. This is gold."

I grabbed the side of the camera rig and physically shoved it toward the empty bleachers. "I said pan left. Now."

Nadia's voice crackled in my earpiece. "Riley, what the hell are you doing? Get the medical! You're missing the realest moment of the practice."

"Player medical evaluations aren't entertainment," I said into my lapel mic.

"You're blowing the coverage," Nadia snapped.

"Then fire me."

The earpiece went silent. Dave sighed and lowered the rig, resting it against his hip. We stood in silence while the trainers escorted Miller into the medical tent.

Practice wrapped an hour later. Weston jogged off the field, his helmet swinging from his fingertips. He stopped two feet away from me.

"Would your sister have done that?" he asked.

The question felt like a physical shove. "She cared about player safety."

"Is that what she told you?"

"She told me plenty."

Weston wiped sweat from his forehead. "Then you should ask her for the rest of it."

He didn't wait for a response. He headed for the tunnel.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Claire's number. She picked up on the third ring.

"I saw the teaser," Claire said, her voice thin and strained. "Riley, quit the project. Just pack your desk and leave."

"I'm not quitting. Weston told them to keep me."

"Of course he did." A bitter laugh echoed through the receiver. "He'll make you think you're the exception. He'll make you think he respects you right up until he ruins you."

"Claire, what exactly were you investigating before you got fired?"

Silence stretched over the line.

"You always said you were looking into player safety," I pressed. "What did you find?"

"Leave it alone, Riley," she whispered.

"Did it have to do with the trainers? The concussions?"

"Drop the documentary."

She ended the call.

At eight o'clock, the editing bay sat completely empty. The glow of the dual monitors washed the tiny room in blue light. Dave had dropped the memory cards on my desk an hour ago, but I hadn't touched them.

An email notification chimed on my desktop.

No subject. No sender address, just a string of randomized numbers.

I clicked the attachment. A scanned document expanded across the screen.

It was a production schedule. The date stamp read four years ago. The header bore Claire's name.

I leaned closer to the monitor. In the margin next to a Tuesday practice slot, a handwritten note stood out in sharp black ink.

Follow up Owen Shaw cognitive test anomaly. GM requires internal proof.

I stared at the initials. GM.

I scrolled to the bottom of the page. The footer listed the production team.

Executive Producer: Grant Mercer.

The same man currently running my show. The same man who wanted me crying on camera by week three. He hadn't just produced Claire's downfall. He had directed her investigation into a player's cognitive tests.

I forwarded the scan to my private email account. I picked up my phone and dialed Claire's number again.

The line rang exactly once.

Then, the automated voice of the carrier announced the number had been disconnected.
