My Sister's Ex Quarterback Became My Biggest Scandal

My internship's defining project was to prove quarterback Weston Cade destroyed my sister Claire's sports media dreams. Chapter 3

"Have you ever argued with a reporter over a teammate's injury?" I asked.

The stadium locker room buzzed with pre-game energy around us, but Weston sat perfectly still on the bench. I kept the microphone angled toward his chin. Earlier that morning, I had dug through the network's physical archives and confirmed what the leaked schedule suggested. Grant Mercer was Claire's direct executive producer four years ago. And Owen Shaw, the player named in the margins, was the safety who retired early after a string of severe concussions.

I didn't take the proof to Grant. I knew better than to hand a man holding a match the exact gasoline he wanted.

Weston stared down the barrel of Dave's camera lens. "Some people's medical history isn't my story to tell."

"Is that a yes?"

"It's a boundary." He shifted his gaze from the lens to my face. "Keep this exact exchange in the full cut. Don't slice it for a teaser."

He didn't deny the arguments. He just refused to give me an excuse for his silence.

Four hours later, the stadium lights glared down on the away game's fourth quarter. Two opposing linebackers shattered the offensive line and drove Weston straight into the turf. The impact echoed all the way up to the press box. Weston stayed down for three seconds, pushed himself up, and threw a forty-yard completion on the next play to finish the drive. Then he walked off the field.

I hurried down the concrete tunnel, Dave trailing a step behind me with the rig mounted on his shoulder. We rounded the corner toward the visiting team's medical room.

Weston stood outside the closed door. He had one hand pressed flat against the cinderblock wall, his head bowed, fighting off a visible wave of nausea.

The team physician stepped out, spotted us, and immediately raised a hand to block the shot.

Tessa was nowhere in sight to enforce the rules.

"Dave, wait around the corner," I said.

Dave lowered the rig. "Are you kidding? That's the shot."

"Wait by the exit."

I unclipped my audio recorder, left the camera behind, and walked down the corridor alone. Weston straightened up as I approached. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

"Where is your guy?" Weston asked, his voice rough.

"Waiting by the buses."

He leaned back against the wall, studying my face. "Why didn't you shoot it? You had a clear angle. That footage buys you a week of trending metrics."

"I'm covering a season," I said. "Not a man's weakest thirty seconds."

A muscle tightened in his jaw, then relaxed. He didn't offer a word of thanks. Instead, he gestured toward the interview backdrop set up near the exit. "Let's do the post-game."

A standard post-game hit lasted three minutes. Weston gave me fifteen. He answered every question I threw at him about the pressure of the franchise, the reality of playing through pain, and the way the media twisted locker room dynamics. He spoke with a blunt honesty that stripped away the polished PR persona Tessa usually demanded.

When Dave finally packed the camera and headed for the van, the concrete hallway emptied out.

I clicked the audio recorder off but kept it in my hand.

"Grant Mercer was Claire's producer," I said.

Weston stopped unzipping his jacket. He didn't feign ignorance. He didn't ask who Grant was.

"He pushed her to turn an off-the-record lead about Owen Shaw into broadcastable proof," I continued, closing the space between us. "Did you know that?"

"I knew Grant pushed her," Weston said. His tone remained entirely level. "I also knew she recorded one of our private conversations to get that proof."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I gripped the plastic edge of the recorder. "Is that why you publicly denied the relationship? Because she taped you?"

"The recording was only a fraction of the fallout." Weston zipped his jacket back up. "She made a choice the night before the scandal broke. A choice I promised I would never explain for her."

"She lost her career!" I fired back, my voice echoing off the concrete walls. "You let the network and the sponsors blacklist her."

"I never made a single call to blacklist your sister." He stepped forward, forcing me to hold my ground. "If you can find one email, one text, or one voicemail from me threatening her career, I will let you air this documentary exactly how you want it. No final cut rights. No restrictions."

The absolute certainty in his eyes threw me off balance. We were standing on a dangerous new fault line. It wasn't pure hostility anymore. It was a test of trust, and I didn't know the rules.

"I sent you an email," I said, the confession slipping out before I could stop it. "Four years ago. I was nineteen. I found your public contact address and I sent you three pages calling you a coward for ruining her and playing innocent."

Weston didn't laugh. He didn't brush it off as a teenage tantrum.

"I read it," he said.

My chest tightened. "You read it."

"I remember the last line." He looked down at me, his expression unreadable. "You wrote, 'Someday someone will ask you the questions you aren't ready for.'"

I swallowed hard.

"You're here now," Weston said quietly.

He didn't step closer, and he didn't offer another word of explanation. He simply turned and walked toward the team buses, leaving me standing alone in the quiet tunnel.

The silence of my hotel room felt suffocating two hours later. I sat on the edge of the mattress, the glow of my laptop illuminating the dark room.

An email from Grant sat in my inbox.

It contained the interview outline for tomorrow's morning shoot. I opened the attachment.

The very first line was bolded and highlighted in bright yellow.

Demand Weston's first public response regarding Claire Bennett.

I scrolled down. There was no nuance, no journalistic angle. It was a blatant ambush designed to trigger a meltdown.

At the bottom of the page, Grant had added a single sentence in plain text.

If you refuse to execute this outline on camera tomorrow, I will replace you by noon.

I stared at the glowing letters, the threat hanging over my entire career. I reached for the mouse, dragged the interview outline document into the trash bin icon, and clicked empty.
