Chapter 2

Alexandria POV

My mind clawed its way back to consciousness.

A dull, throbbing ache pulsed through my body, a relentless rhythm of pain.

My eyelids felt heavy, glued shut. When I finally forced them open, the sterile white ceiling of a hospital room swam into view.

Every muscle screamed in protest. A sharp, burning sensation in my lower abdomen drew my focus.

I tried to move, but a searing pain shot through me, making me gasp.

A quick glance down revealed a stark reality: a thick bandage covered my lower stomach, beneath it, a dark stain of dried blood.

I didn't need a doctor to tell me what had happened.

The emptiness in my womb, the agonizing ache, confirmed it. My baby was gone.

The brutal truth hit me with the force of a physical blow. A choked sob escaped my lips, silent tears streaming down my face.

My child. My beautiful, innocent child.

Barron, Gisela. I cursed them both, a silent, venomous vow for the lives they had so casually destroyed.

The darkness beckoned, a welcome escape from the suffocating grief. I yearned for unconsciousness, for the blessed oblivion it offered.

A quiet click of the door. Footsteps.

Even before I opened my eyes, I knew. Barron.

His presence, even before I saw him, felt like a cold dread.

I kept my eyes closed, feigning sleep, my breathing shallow. I needed to hear the truth with my own ears.

He approached my bedside. I heard Efrem's familiar, heavier tread behind him.

Barron's voice was hushed, a careful whisper.

"How is she? The baby?"

He sounded… concerned. The thought brought a bitter, cynical twist to my lips. His concern extended only to his twisted agenda.

Efrem's reply was guarded.

"Alexandria is stable, Barron. But there were complications."

He paused, a heavy silence hanging in the air.

"The baby… the baby didn't make it."

A low, guttural sound escaped Barron's throat.

Not grief, not sorrow. Relief. Undeniable, sickening relief.

"So, it's done then." His voice, though still low, held a distinct note of satisfaction. "The firstborn is gone."

The words were a physical blow, worse than any kick from the assailant.

They ripped through the last fragments of my heart.

My vision swam, but I kept my eyes clamped shut, unwilling to let them see the devastation they had wrought.

He was relieved. Relieved that my child, our child, was dead.

My mind reeled, a torrent of memories flashing before my eyes.

Barron, on his knees, proposing with a ring that shimmered under the city lights.

His tender hand on my belly, whispering promises to our unborn child. "You'll be the best mother, Lexi. Our baby will be so loved."

He had sworn to protect me from everything.

He had bought me flowers every week, remembered every insignificant detail about my life, spent hours listening to my art curation ideas, even when they bored him.

He would rage at anyone who dared to annoy me, his protective instincts fierce and immediate.

He had been so convincing, so charming, so utterly devoted.

It was all a performance, a meticulously crafted illusion.

Every loving word, every tender touch, every shared dream was a lie designed to facilitate his monstrous plan.

Barron cleared his throat.

"And Alexandria? Is she… alright, otherwise?"

The question was an afterthought, an obligation, not genuine care.

Efrem's sigh was heavy, laden with disgust.

"She suffered massive internal trauma, Barron. They performed an emergency hysterectomy. She won't be able to have children, ever again."

Barron's sharp intake of breath was audible.

A stunned silence filled the room.

This was not part of his plan. This was something he hadn't accounted for.

My body, my future, completely destroyed.

The bitter irony twisted in my gut. He had wanted to erase one child, and in doing so, he had ensured I could never have another.

The ultimate desecration.

I felt my heart harden into something new. Something dangerous.

Barron leaned close, stroking my hair, playing the devoted husband.

"I'll protect you, Lexi. This will be my penance."

I let him believe I was unconscious.

I let him believe I was weak.

But I was listening. And I was learning.

He had no idea the woman in that bed was already planning her own funeral.
