Chapter 1

The grand wedding procession stopped at the door of our house, bells jingled signalling the matrimony about to happen.

I stood like a statue watching the man I married getting married to another woman.

The man I took the blame for and went to prison for getting married right in front of me. Not just to any woman but my adoptive sister!

Funny isn't it? Xavier, dressed in a neat suit, got out of the car, holding flowers in his hands, smiling handsomely and brightly.

How could he not be handsome? After all, he was the man I liked. I denied my family for him. I took blames him and went to prison in his stead, and even gave him the black limitless card I was given by my dad.

As a result, my parents disowned me for loving a man too much.

But I was still happy and felt that I had met my true love. So I thought it didn’t matter even I had no money even if my parents disowned me, I have been their only child all my life, changing sides doesn't mean anything does it?

With the black card, we lived in luxury while he worked in a company which I helped him got a job to with my family influence.

There, he embezzled the company money and was about to be sent to prison without a chance of paying back what he ursurped. But I loved and trusted my man too much. I took the blame for him and was sent to prison for 2 years.

I was released today, expecting him to come and get me but he didn't show up only for me to come home myself and find out that he's getting married.

How ironic! What a life

Watching him enter the compound surrounded by four groomsmen, I stood quietly behind the three bridesmaids, ready to give him a big surprise.

The bridesmaids knocked on the door for a while and the door of our matrimonial bedroom was finally opened for them.

The bridesmaids entered with shouts of joy as the sprayed confetti's on Britney my adoptive sister.

Amid the noise of everyone’s cheers, Xavier came in with a grin on his face.

I deliberately took a step forward and stood in front of him. We saw each other’s face.

The moment he saw my face clearly, the smile on Xavier’s lips froze instantly.

His face became white, as if he had seen a ghost and sweat was almost coming out on his forehead. I could be see how panicked he was.

“Xavier, come in quickly,” A group of people behind him urged him.

He wiped the sweat off his face and didn’t dare look at me again.

Probably because he was afraid that I would ruin his marriage, he was trembling with fear and glanced at me occasionally.

What shocked me the most was that Britney didn't act as if she saw me when her bridal train walked her out of the bedroom and she passed beside me.

Anger gushed into my blood vessels with great rush, but for the little love I still have, I waited. Maybe something had happened.

Xavier cannot ditch me like this. No. My inner thoughts said and I sat down as they both said the vows and exchanged rings.

He was terrified of my gaze, and after the joining together, there's a little game organized by the groomsmen and during the game of skipping rope and rolling in the massage mat, he fell down and his nose bruised.

The groomsmen hurriedly took him to restroom for cleaning, and passed by where I was standing.

Our eyes met for a while and was locked to each other before he was finally taken out of the place.

Still sitting down, a text message popped into my phone first time in a while from Xavie. [Ariadne, I can explain what happened in a few words. Please wait until the wedding is over. I don't know that you're getting released today I'll have make sure you didn't witness all these]

Even though my anger, I was amused by his absurdity.

So if he knew that I was getting released today he won't have married her and continue cheating on me?

Not just any woman but my adoptive sister! I remembered when Britney was brought to our house when I was 13 years old and she was 15.

Then, her dad worked as my dad's driver and because of her impeccable brilliance, dad decided to bring her to our house to help her dad who was a loyal staff. Since then we both acted like real sister.

Britney was in her best behavior, we get along pretty well like real sisters even after her dad died of cancer, dad let her stayed at our house like a real child. He partially adopted her. Who would have thought that she was eyeing my husband all these days?

Britney's and my eyes met and she smirked at me.

At this moment, I realized that Britney was not innocent at all. I thought she was also a poor girl who needed love and family.

She studied medicine and surgery before I left for prison all which was sponsored by my parents. I guessed she must be a doctor by now.

After the games and all, the bridesmaids left her to rest, I walked up to her slowly. She stood up and crossed her arms on her chest with a smirk as she said,

"Welcome back from Prison dear sister. I guessed you must be boiling with anger right now? Stop bothering him, he's now mine”

She was arrogant like an old peacock spreading its tail. "How dare you covet my man Britney?” I asked angrily.

Britney's face, which was beautifully made up, was instantly covered with frost, She became furious immediately,

“Then I'll make sure you go back to prison! No one will come for you! No appeal even!"

“Really?” I smiled contemptuously and meaningfully.

Xavier to came in madly.

When Xavier walked in and saw that only I and Britney were in the lounge, his expression suddenly changed. I was sure that he must have thought that I said something to Britney and ruined his great marriage.

“Britney, don’t believe what she told you. Listen to me. It’s you who I love”

I laughed bitterly.

She was very proud and showed off to me by walking to him and hook her arms with his. They look like a perfect couple and me? Like the third party.

Xavier turned around with an angry look on his face, “Ariadne, please don’t harass me anymore. I don't want to have anything to do with an ex-convict anymore!”

This words stuck me. "Xavier did you just call me an ex-convict? Xavier I went to prison because of you! I....."

"Ariadne please! You did it to help me thank you! Does that change the fact that you're an ex-convict?" He almost yelled at me.

My world fell. Xavier can open his mouth and tell me that I'm an ex-convict? Not ordinarily but while marrying my adoptive sister?

This can't be...

"Did mum and dad know about this? Did you think they will let you off the hook for doing this to me?" I asked in between gasps and sobs.

To my utmost surprise, Britney laughed. Laughed so much that I felt like a fool again.

"Mum and Dad? Did you mean the dead ones or another one?"

Hearing this, I became more surprised and shocked, "Dead ones?"

Britney and Xavier walked out of my sight still hooked to each other, but before that, Britney whispered, "All thanks to your foolish decision of taking the blame for Xavier, your mum and dad encountered an accident while rushing to the court on the day of your trial"

***

Broken and disheartened, I walked through the bustling streets of Liverpool, thinking of my love life that had just been snatched away and my parents death that was because of me.

No wonder they are not present on my trial day, I had thought they are still angry at me and didn't even know that I was being tried.

So they had an accident.

Tears flowed in my eyes endlessly, I was thrown into this abyss of disarray and betrayal with no one to support me again.

Giddy and weak, I walked through the alley that lead to my friend, Zora's working place. She's the only one I could think of right now to shelter me for the night since I have no dime on me.

My phone vibrated. I looked at the screen and saw 'Uncle' there my dad's younger brother.

I picked it with slow voice and said, "Hello Uncle I was released....."

"Yes, Yes I know. That's why I called you" My uncle's annoying grumpy voice cuts in and I kept quiet. "I heard that you showed your face at Britney and Xavier's wedding?"

I was bamboozled, "Uncle what are you...."

"Listen here Ariadne, Don't think of coming back to claim any property. You caused your parents death by taking blame for a man who later ditched you. I'm taking care of your dad's company and I have sold the house. The black card you we're given is limitless so you can call that your share of the inheritance. So get lost you bad child!" My uncle retorted and I stopped dead in my tracks.

No inheritance for me except the black limitless card? The black card I have given to Xavier?

"No....No Uncle I...."

"Your parents died because of your foolishness and I'm supporting Britney in marrying Xavier. That's what you deserve for disobeying your parents" He shouted and ended the call.

I heard the first explosion at 2 a.m. I was already awake — I'd been awake for an hour, lying in the dark with Weston's side of the bed cold beside me, listening to the silence that had become the loudest thing in our room. When the blast shook the walls, I was on my feet before the echo died. The pack house was chaos. Smoke poured through the east corridor, thick and black, and I could hear warriors shouting somewhere above me. I pulled on my boots and ran toward the sound — toward the basement stairwell, where two of our younger Deltas were trying to drag a jammed door open. The rogue raid had hit the supply wing first. Smart. Cut the weapons cache, collapse the structure, drive everyone into the open. I'd helped design our raid response protocols.

It was a picture of his hand holding another woman's, posted by a socialite whose mother was his "pet project." The caption read: "My hero, dropping everything for my mother's health scare." He wasn't saving lives in a catastrophic accident. He was holding hands for a photo op while my mother's life was on the line with a replacement surgeon. He chose them over us. He abandoned my mother's surgery for a "health scare," moved his mistress and her mother into the nursery I had prepared for our future child, and then, in front of a crowd at the hospital, publicly denied ever knowing my mother to protect his new "family." I watched him destroy our lives for their applause, for a lie. He called me dramatic, childish, and cruel for not understanding his "compassion." But what he didn't know was that I had already hired the most ruthless divorce attorney in the city. This wasn't a cry for attention; it was a declaration of war.
