Chapter 3

At the mention of this, Caleb got frustrated. "When Evelyn and I got married and were buying a house, you were too afraid to spend money and kept pushing us to buy a second-hand house. You didn’t say a word back then."

When we were getting married, Margaret kept saying how popular and amazing second-hand houses were.

In other words, Margaret's double standards were completely exposed.

As I rolled my eyes, about to let them reach the heavens, the guy named Victor spoke up, saying that since they were married, he didn’t want Margaret to suffer, so he wanted to buy them a new house.

Wait a second. I was a bit confused by the situation.

He married Margaret, didn’t want her to suffer, but now he wanted Margaret to sell her house so they could buy a new one, and that would count as their marital property???

I repeated the sentence in disbelief and asked Caleb, "Caleb, my ears aren't malfunctioning, right?"

Looking at Caleb's expression, to be honest, if it weren't for the screen between us, I’m sure he would have cursed by now.

But I wasn’t looking through a screen.

I stood up and pointed directly at Victor, scolding, "Are you out of your mind?

If you really want to put on some romantic show, you should go earn money and buy your own house. What are you doing, taking someone else’s house for your performance? I've never seen someone so shameless—using others' resources and then setting up a monument to themselves. How much more shame do you have left?"

Victor clearly didn’t expect me to openly embarrass him in front of Margaret.

He was completely stunned at first, but after a moment, his face turned angry, and it looked like he was about to get physical with me.

But I wasn’t scared. If he laid a hand on me, I’d make sure to take advantage of it.

However, he still had a bit of self-control. Instead of actually starting a fight, he just picked up his son and left.

Margaret followed after him, and the two of them put on a melodramatic farewell scene right by the door, making my skin crawl.

But even after Victor left, the issue of the house still had to be addressed with my unreasonable mother-in-law.

Caleb just couldn’t understand how Margaret could agree to sell the house.

Margaret hesitated for a long time before finally admitting her true concern. "It's not about the house, it’s just whenever I’m inside, I feel like your dad is watching me."

Honestly, that made sense. Arthur had always treated Margaret incredibly well over the years. If he knew she was already seeing someone else just a short time after his passing, he’d probably be so angry, he’d rise from the grave.

And Caleb had always had the closest relationship with his dad.

Arthur had just passed away last year, and now Margaret was dealing with all of this—it already bothered Caleb, and hearing his father's name made him even more upset. He felt that Arthur deserved so much more.

Margaret, though, seemed to grow more animated. "He's dead. So, shouldn't I still live my own life?"

While we didn’t mind her having her own life, we still believed that marriage was a matter between two people.

And as for Victor...

Well, he was still a guy, right? So how come he wasn’t even considering the house situation?

Moreover, Caleb and I weren’t asking for anything unreasonable. We’d always said that if they were getting married, it was between Margaret and him.

If they still wanted a new house, we wouldn’t insist that only Victor pay for it.

Caleb and I had already discussed it: the money for the house would be split. Whatever Victor contributed, we would match, and the house would be in both their names.

This arrangement was completely fair and reasonable.

But Margaret wasn’t having it. "Victor is so young. Where would he get that much money to buy a house?"
