Chapter 1

My mother-in-law, Margaret, is driving me crazy by selling the house.

When Margaret jumps off a building, I’ll hand her a stool.

When Margaret raises her hand, I’ll call the cops.

It was when Margaret tried to settle things with Caleb that he waved his hand and said, "No way, I’m love-struck. I can’t live without my wife."

...

Margaret, a late-stage love-struck fool.

So far gone that she’d sell her car and house, even turn her back on her own son, just for some scumbag.

Her story with that scumbag starts back at Thanksgiving.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, Caleb was out of town for work and wouldn’t be back for a while.

I took my daughter to visit Margaret, and to my surprise, there was a man in his thirties standing behind her. He said, "From now on, we’re family."

Seeing that, I got a little nervous. Could this man be another illegitimate child of my late father-in-law, Arthur?

Just as I was trying to figure out how to break it to Caleb when I got home, Margaret and the guy held hands right in front of us.

The moment was painfully awkward. As a daughter-in-law, I had no idea how to handle it.

The tension was thick when suddenly, a little boy, about five or six, who looked about the same age as my daughter, came running out of the study. He sprayed me with a water gun, soaking me completely, and snapped me back to reality.

My daughter, seeing me drenched, was furious and yelled, "Hey! You sprayed my mom! Apologize right now!"

Margaret, hearing this, scolded my daughter, "Ruby, how are you speaking to Uncle like that? Such bad manners!"

Uncle?

Which uncle?

My brain was racing, but I couldn’t quite figure out who was related to who.

Before I could process anything, that little brat started spraying my daughter with the water gun, shouting, "Take that! Take that!"

That was the last straw. I had just rolled up my sleeves, ready to take action when Ruby, quick as a flash, sprinted over and kicked the boy.

I have to admit, Ruby’s Taekwondo lessons weren’t a waste. That kick was absolutely perfect.

The boy was sent flying and, before he could steady himself, he fell to the floor crying.

Margaret and the man rushed over to help the boy, but in the process, Margaret shoved Ruby hard. "Ruby Reed! Do you want to get slapped?"

Ruby, pushed so hard, fell to the ground and hit her forehead on the edge of the sofa. It immediately swelled up.

All the anger I had been holding back suddenly erupted.

I grabbed the vase on the table and slammed it to the ground with a loud crash.

The room finally fell silent.

I turned my glare on Margaret. "Did you push Ruby?"

Margaret knew full well that I have a short temper.

And Ruby... well, she’s my everything. When she saw what happened, she must have started to feel guilty. "I didn’t mean to."

I looked at Ruby’s forehead, relieved that it wasn’t too serious. "Apologize!"

I’m not sure if it was the man being present or if Margaret was afraid of losing face, but she spoke up with a harsh tone. "Evelyn Reed, I said I didn’t mean it. Besides, Ruby started it."

Bullshit. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes in my head. "You’re not going to mention how your little brat sprayed us both?"

Margaret, probably realizing she was in the wrong, muttered, "It’s just kids playing around, don’t take it seriously."

"Kids playing around? Maybe, but you’re not a kid anymore. And why are you siding with some stranger to bully your own granddaughter?"
