Chapter 3

I had spent twenty-four hours building reasonable explanations.

The call was a wrong number from someone who liked to be dramatic. The woman had the wrong husband. Aiden was on a work call that night, something I had misheard and misread because I was tired and already primed for the worst after a day that started with my mother-in-law's rings against my jaw.

I was good at reasonable explanations. I had been practicing them for months.

I was folding laundry on the bed when Aiden's phone lit up on the pillow beside me.

I didn't touch it because I didn't need to. The screen was face-up and the preview was visible from exactly where I was standing, a shirt half-folded in my hands.

Marcie B. 🤍

Miss me yet?

I set the shirt down, then I walked to the bathroom, sat on the edge of the tub, and stared at the tile grout I had cleaned four days ago.

I did not cry. I was not going to react.

If I was going to move, I needed to know everything first.

All of it.

Marcie Barlow arrived at the Morris house at seven that evening.

I heard Claudia's voice change from across the kitchen, and then the front door opened and perfume came in ahead of everything else. Something expensive. The kind of scent that announces itself.

I came to the kitchen doorway.

She was already kissing Claudia's cheek, one hand light on Claudia's arm, saying something that made Claudia laugh. Then she turned to Gideon and called him her favorite executive and Gideon actually smiled, which I had seen him do maybe four times in fourteen months.

She had been here before, I could see it in the way she moved. She didn't pause to figure out where to put her bag.

She knew this house.

We had met briefly before. She had been pleasant. The warm, easy pleasant of someone who is confident enough not to need anything from you and wants you to feel that.

Tonight she found the couch in the living room and settled into it like she'd picked her spot years ago. She looked up as Aiden came in from the kitchen and something passed between them that was quick and had the texture of a habit.

He poured her a drink without asking what she wanted. Whiskey on the rocks.

He has never once poured me a drink without asking what I wanted.

Marcie accepted the glass, and her fingers rested against his hand one beat longer than necessary, and she turned to look directly at me across the room. Her smile was bright and completely deliberate.

I went to the kitchen, put both hands on the edge of the counter, and breathed through my teeth until my vision cleared.

She wasn't hiding it.

That was what got to me, the fact that she had looked me in the eye while she did it, easy and unbothered, because she had decided I was exactly what Aiden had told her I was.

Harmless.

I stayed in the kitchen and finished making the tea no one had asked me to make. I listened to the laughter from the living room and did not go back in there for the rest of the night.

After midnight, when the house was quiet and Aiden was asleep and the only light was the small lamp on my side of the desk, I opened my laptop.

I typed Marcie Barlow into the search bar.

She was easy to find. 847,000 followers. A grid of curated perfection: restaurant tables and travel and the particular aesthetic of someone who has never had to check a price. She was twenty-four. She was beautiful in the kind of effortless way that takes a significant amount of effort. She had been tagged in three separate posts from VantageCore corporate events.

I clicked through to her profile information.

Daughter of Eric Barlow.

I read it once. Then I read it again.

I typed the name.

Eric Barlow. CFO. VantageCore Technologies.

The room felt very still.

VantageCore.

The company whose lawyers had been reaching out to me every week for a month. The company my uncle left entirely to me.

The company where Aiden had spent his career chasing promotions...

The company Marcie Barlow had apparently been dangling in front of my husband like a door only she had the key to.

I sat back in the chair.

My husband was sleeping with the CFO's daughter.

He had chosen her because she had access to something he wanted, and she had let him believe that access was the most valuable thing in that building.

Neither of them knew that the most valuable name in that building was mine.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I closed the laptop slowly, in the dark, while smiling.

Oh, I thought.

Oh.
