Chapter 1

Yara Chaw, heavily pregnant, stood right in front of my door, blocking my way. As soon as I opened it, she gave me a once-over, then snorted through her nose.

"I’m carrying your husband’s child," she said, her tone icy. "The months are getting longer, and we need to talk about this. I plan on keeping the baby, so you have two choices: give me some money, or divorce him and make space for me."

I stood there, frozen, trying to make sense of her words.

But what shocked me even more than what she said was the revelation that Wesley Cole had cheated.

After all, he had always been the perfect husband in everyone’s eyes. Even after five years of marriage, we were still the model couple, the ideal friends and family looked up to.

We were introduced by mutual friends, and while his family was well-off, I came from a modest background.

The first time I went to meet his parents, I was a nervous wreck. My palms were sweaty, and I ran through countless scenarios in my head, imagining they’d look down on me, maybe mock me, reminding me of my place in life.

Although that was just my assumption, it’s the kind of thing that happens all too often in reality.

When the difference in backgrounds is so vast, marriage often feels more like charity to the wealthier party.

But none of my fears came true.

In fact, they liked me right away, welcoming me as their future daughter-in-law. Our wedding went off without a hitch. However, when it came to starting a family, things didn’t go as smoothly. We’ve been trying for so long with no success.

If Yara hadn’t come knocking today, just yesterday, I wouldn’t have believed Wesley Cole could cheat. It would’ve been easier to believe the world was ending tomorrow.

I must look terrible right now, and Yara’s smug smile is getting more and more self-satisfied by the second.

She grinned, placing a hand on her swollen belly. "Honestly, I didn’t want to come to you, but Wesley kept dragging his feet and wouldn’t give me a clear answer. I had to take matters into my own hands for the sake of the child."

I instinctively stepped back, leaning against the wall to steady my suddenly weak legs.

I’m usually a kind person, but that doesn’t mean I’m a soft target for anyone to walk all over.

Hearing Yara’s words made me snap.

"To you, seducing a married man is something to be proud of, huh? I never imagined a mistress could be so brazen. Did your parents never teach you about respect and decency?"

Yara’s smile vanished in an instant. She glared at me, her teeth clenched. "Wesley told me himself. He said marrying you was a mistake, and being with me was him finally finding the right path. He said you should just divorce him and save yourself the humiliation."

"You're the one looking for trouble now," I shot back. "Wesley isn’t even here, and yet here you are, showing up at my doorstep with your big belly. How about I get a reporter to interview you? What’s it like for the mistress to come to the wife’s door and provoke her?"

My words were sharp, each one more cutting than the last.

I quickly pulled myself together. Now that the truth was out in the open, the only option left between me and Wesley was divorce.

But if what Yara said was true, if he was already so tired of this marriage, he could’ve come to me and asked for a divorce directly. I wouldn’t have refused him.
