Chapter 1

The bond broke open at 11:47 PM on the northern border.

I didn't mean to hear it. Nicholas's guard was down—some private meeting with Ethan had left his mental walls thin—and the mate bond, that sacred thing the Moon Goddess supposedly blessed us with, bled his thoughts straight into my skull.

*"She's too valuable to lose."*

Nicholas's voice. Low. Certain.

Then Ethan's laugh, sharp as breaking glass. *"Mia will fit the Lycan Court better anyway."*

My wolf slammed against the inside of my ribs. Not a whimper. A war cry.

The third transfer. Diverted. Again.

I stood in the dark pines with my tracker's report half-finished in my hand—rogue movements, scent trails, the intelligence I'd spent six hours collecting—and the paper crumpled in my fist. Three years. Three times the Lycan King's court had requested me by name. Three times Nicholas had smiled at me over breakfast and told me the timing wasn't right, that Shadowveil needed me more, that we'd discuss it next season.

Three times he'd sent Mia Hawkins in my place.

My boots hit the forest floor before I made the decision to move. Tracker's instinct: when the trail goes cold, you run toward the last known position. The pack house was two miles south. I covered it in ten minutes, my wolf snarling the entire way, claws scraping the inside of my skin like she wanted out *now*.

I didn't shift. I needed my human voice for this.

The main hall's double doors were heavy oak, imported, expensive. I kicked them open.

Nicholas stood near the stone hearth with Ethan and four inner-circle wolves—his Gamma, two Deltas, and Marcus Hale, the pack's senior tracker who'd trained me and then stopped meeting my eyes six months ago. They all turned. Nicholas's dark cedar scent hit me first, overlaid with something sharper. Annoyance. Maybe fear.

Good.

"June sixteenth," I said. My voice came out flat. Tracker's report tone. "First Lycan Court transfer request. Denied. Forwarded to Mia Hawkins, unmated, ranked Delta, no specialized skills."

Nicholas straightened. "Aria—"

"September ninth. Second request. Denied. Forwarded to Mia Hawkins."

"This isn't the time—"

"March twenty-second." I stepped into the center of the hall. The inner circle shifted, wolves reading the air, sensing something about to detonate. "Third request. Denied. Forwarded to Mia Hawkins. Except this time I didn't hear it from you. I heard it through the bond you left wide open while you and Ethan laughed about how I'm 'too valuable to lose.'"

Silence. The kind that has weight.

Ethan's hand went to his left cuff. Tell. He always straightened it when he lied.

Nicholas's jaw tightened. Then his voice dropped—not in volume, but in register. The Alpha tone. It hit like a fist to the sternum.

"Kneel."

My knees buckled. The stone floor was cold and unforgiving. My wolf howled inside me, furious and pinned, the mate bond tightening like a noose around my chest. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. The compulsion was biological, absolute, the Moon Goddess's gift turned into a leash.

Nicholas walked toward me. Slow. Deliberate. He stopped close enough that I could see the stitching on his boots.

"My Luna's place," he said, and the Alpha tone made every word a command that vibrated through my bones, "is at my heel. Not at a foreign court."

The inner circle watched. Marcus looked at the floor. Ethan's mouth curved just slightly. No one spoke.

My wolf recorded every face.

The compulsion released. I could breathe again. My knees screamed. I stood anyway, spine straight, and met Nicholas's eyes. I didn't perform submission. I didn't cry. I gave him the same flat stare I'd give a rogue I was about to put down.

"I know," I said quietly, "that you suppressed the mind-link evidence that cleared my name from Mia's complaint three years ago."

Nicholas went very still.

"I know," I continued, "that you forged the elder council's approval signature on the file."

Ethan's hand dropped from his cuff.

"And I will be verifying," I said, each word precise, "every antidote administration log for my mother's treatment. Starting tonight."

I walked past Nicholas toward the corridor that led to the healer's den. His hand moved to my arm—fingers closing just above my elbow—and I stopped. Didn't look at him.

"Take your hand," I said softly, "off your Luna."

He let go.

My wolf, still bruised from the Alpha-tone compulsion, purred in dark satisfaction. First counter-move.

I walked.

Healer Willow Harper's den smelled like antiseptic and dried herbs. She looked up from her workbench when I entered, and her face did something complicated—surprise, then fear, then something that looked like apology.

"I need," I said, "the full antidote administration log for Catherine Castillo."

Willow hesitated. That hesitation told me everything.

Before she could refuse, Nicholas's scent filled the doorway behind me. He didn't raise his voice.

"The logs are Alpha-restricted documentation, Willow. Return to your duties."

I looked at the healer's face. Pale. Trapped. Not an enemy. Another hostage.

There was a single page on Willow's desk—one week's dosage schedule, my mother's name at the top. I palmed it before Nicholas could move and walked past him without speaking.

In the corridor, alone, I leaned against the cold stone wall and counted.

The doses were spaced correctly. But every entry bore Nicholas's authorization signature. Not Willow's standing order. His.

My mother's life required his personal approval. Every week.

I folded the page and slid it into my boot.

That night, in the Alpha quarters Nicholas and I hadn't shared in months, I sat at the desk with the single-page log and the intercepted mind-link fragment burning in my memory. I opened my tracker's field notebook—small, leather-bound, carried since my first year of rank—and began writing.

Dates. Transfer request numbers. Dose authorization signatures. The specific wording of Nicholas's Alpha-tone commands. The names of every pack member who witnessed each incident.

The notebook fit in my boot. I tied it closed with the red cord from my old warrior commission scrolls—the one artifact of my rank Nicholas hadn't touched yet.

My wolf was quiet now. Watching.

Outside, the Pacific Northwest dark pressed against the windows. Somewhere in the pack house, Nicholas was calculating his next move.

So was I.
