My Mate Used My Inheritance on His Mistress

For a Lead Tracker of the Ironveil Pack, every Tuesday unfolds the same way: dawn patrol, then a dull audit of communication logs. Nothing ever deviates. What starts as ordinary work pulls her into a mystery that cuts straight into her mate bond, her pack, and the inheritance meant to protect her future. Chapter 3

The rogue borderlands smelled like rot and burned fur.

I'd been tracking the offshore account trail for three nights straight. The numbers led to a network of shell companies registered in neutral territory, but the physical goods — the pendant, the harness — had been moved through rogue channels. Black-market dealers who didn't ask questions. Who took cash and kept their mouths shut.

I needed to see the route myself. To confirm the trail wasn't just digital. So I volunteered for a late-night patrol along the eastern border, where the rogue dens clustered like infected wounds in the forest.

The moon was a thin crescent. My wolf's vision cut through the dark easily. I moved through the trees in silence, my senses sharp. The patrol route took me past three abandoned dens. Rogues didn't stay in one place long. They moved like parasites, draining an area and leaving wreckage behind.

The fourth den was different.

It was destroyed. Not abandoned. Destroyed. The wooden structure had been torn apart, beams splintered and scattered. Claw marks scored the ground. Blood had soaked into the dirt, old and black. A fight had happened here. A bad one.

I should have kept moving. Should have marked it in my report and continued the patrol.

But then I heard it.

A whimper. Soft. Barely there.

My wolf froze. Her ears swiveled toward the sound. It came from inside the wreckage.

I moved carefully, stepping over broken beams and shredded fabric. The smell of death was thick here. But underneath it, faint and fragile, was the scent of a living wolf.

A pup.

I found him wedged beneath a collapsed section of roof. He was tiny. Maybe three months old. His fur was matted with dirt and dried blood. His ribs showed through his sides like ladder rungs. His eyes were closed, his breathing shallow.

He was dying.

My wolf surged forward, a sharp protective instinct that knocked the air from my lungs. I didn't think. I just moved. I pulled off my jacket and wrapped it around him, lifting him as gently as I could. He whimpered again, a sound so small it broke something in my chest.

"I've got you," I whispered. "You're safe now."

He didn't open his eyes.

I carried him back through the forest, moving fast but careful. The patrol route could wait. This couldn't.

By the time I reached the pack house, it was past midnight. The halls were empty. I took him straight to my quarters, bypassing the healer's wing. I didn't want questions. Not yet.

I laid him on a blanket near the fireplace and built a fire. Then I heated broth in the kitchen, poured it into a shallow bowl, and brought it back. I dipped my fingers in the warm liquid and let it drip onto his muzzle.

He stirred. His pink tongue flicked out, tasting the broth. I did it again. And again. Slowly, his eyes cracked open. Amber. Wide and terrified.

"It's okay," I murmured. "You're safe. I promise."

He lapped weakly at the broth. I stayed with him for hours, feeding him drop by drop, stroking his matted fur. When he finally fell asleep, his small body curled against my leg, I named him.

Buster.

From that night on, he slept at the foot of my bed. His warm weight grounded me through the long, dark hours when I traced Nathaniel's stolen funds and the mate bond burned like acid in my chest.

---

The pendant's trail led me to a black-market dealer in neutral territory. A weasel of a wolf named Garrett who specialized in enchanted jewelry. He kept terrible records, but I didn't need records. I had his scent profile from a surveillance sweep two years ago. I had his banking patterns. I had his known associates.

It took me four days to corner him.

When I did, he tried to lie. Said he didn't remember the pendant. Said he dealt with hundreds of pieces.

I showed him a photo of the moonstone.

His face went pale.

"That one," he said slowly. "Yeah. I remember. Custom order. Paid in cash. Big money."

"Who bought it?"

He hesitated. I let my aura flare, just a little. Enough to make his wolf whimper.

"Male. Mid-thirties. Smelled like pine smoke. Gave a fake name, but the transfer came from an Ironveil routing number."

I pulled up the transfer records on my tablet. Showed him the account.

"This one?"

He nodded fast. "Yeah. That's it. The funds were flagged as 'estate disbursement.' I figured it was inheritance money."

It was. Mine.

I archived his testimony, paid him for his cooperation, and left.

The war harness was easier. The artisan who made it kept meticulous records. When I showed up at his workshop in Thornfield territory, he pulled the invoice without me even asking.

"Beautiful piece," he said, running a hand over the tooled leather. "Custom Alpha-grade. Paid with a wire transfer from Ironveil's warrior training fund. The buyer said it was a ceremonial gift."

"Do you still have the authorization signature?"

He did. Nathaniel's handwriting. Clear as day.

I took photos of everything. The invoice. The signature. The account number.

When I got back to Ironveil, I compiled it all into a single file. Every transaction. Every forged authorization. Every diverted dollar traced back to my Silverpine inheritance and Ironveil's pack funds.

The case was airtight.

That night, I lay in bed with Buster curled against my ankle. The mate bond pulsed in my chest, a dull, sickening ache. Down the hall, Nathaniel was asleep, dreaming his safe little dreams.

I stared at the ceiling.

Tomorrow, I would shatter his world.

---

The Ironveil Pack council chamber was a circular room with high ceilings and stone walls. Twelve wolves sat in a semicircle: Alpha Alistair Vance at the center, flanked by his Beta, Gamma, and the senior council members. Nathaniel sat to the left, his posture confident, his expression calm.

He thought this was routine. A formality.

I stood in the center of the room, my hands steady at my sides. My wolf was silent. Coiled. Ready.

Alpha Vance looked at me. "Lead Tracker Ashford. You requested this session. Proceed."

I met Nathaniel's eyes. He smiled at me. That same easy, charming smile.

I spoke the words I'd rehearsed a thousand times.

"I, Victoria Ashford, Lead Tracker of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Nathaniel Cross, as my fated mate."

The room went silent.

The bond detonated.

Pain ripped through my chest like a claw tearing through bone. My knees buckled. My vision whited out. Every nerve in my body screamed. My wolf howled, a sound of pure agony that echoed through my skull.

But I did not fall.

I locked my knees. I dug my nails into my palms. I let my aura blaze, a cold, predatory wave that filled the chamber.

And I stayed standing.

Nathaniel stared at me, his face frozen in shock.

Alpha Vance leaned forward. "Rejection acknowledged. Nathaniel Cross, do you accept?"

Nathaniel's mouth opened. Closed. His eyes darted around the room.

Then he dropped to his knees.

"No," he whispered. "No, I don't accept."
