Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 PM beneath a full moon I would never look at the same way again.

I felt it the second Colby stepped forward from the crowd. My bond mark—that faint warm patch at the base of my neck I'd been nursing like a secret for three years—flushed hot. My breath caught. Around me, the entire Ironveil Pack had assembled for the annual Mate Ceremony, wolves pressed shoulder to shoulder in the clearing, their excitement humming through the night air like static. I stood near the back, my healer's apprentice robes marking me as nobody important, but none of that mattered because Colby was walking toward the center and his cedar-and-rain scent was wrapping around me and I thought—

I thought he was going to claim me.

"I, Colby Greer, warrior of Ironveil," his voice rang out clear and formal, "reject you, Charley Whitmore, as my mate."

The bond severed like a blade through my sternum.

My mark went ice-cold. Not the pleasant cool of water on a hot day—cold like a door slamming shut on an empty room, cold like the absence of something that was supposed to be there forever. The faint whisper of my wolf, the barely-there warmth I'd been holding onto for three years, fell utterly, devastatingly silent.

My knees buckled.

I caught myself on the shoulder of the wolf in front of me—some Delta whose name I didn't know—and he stepped away like I'd burned him. Around me, faces turned. I saw pity. I saw contempt. I saw Petra Greer, Colby's mother, standing near the front with naked triumph written across her features.

Colby didn't even pause.

He pulled Elle Hargrove to his side, her hand already in his like they'd rehearsed it. "I claim Elle Hargrove, daughter of Beta Hargrove, as my chosen mate," he announced, his voice carrying the same formal weight. Elle smiled—sharp and satisfied—and the pack erupted in approving howls.

I pressed my fingertips to the bond mark. It was a habit I didn't realize I had until that moment, a self-soothing gesture I'd been performing for years whenever Colby's scent drifted past me in the pack house corridors. Now the mark was just cold skin. Dead tissue. Nothing.

I forced myself upright.

The ceremony continued around me—other matings announced, other bonds celebrated—but I couldn't hear any of it over the roaring silence where my wolf used to be. Even dormant, she'd been a presence. A faint hum of warmth. Now there was nothing. Just me, alone inside my own head, in a way I hadn't been since I was thirteen.

I turned and walked.

No one stopped me. The crowd parted like I was contagious. I caught fragments of whispers as I passed—"wolfless," "finally," "what did she expect"—but I didn't slow down. I walked across the moonlit courtyard, past the pack house entrance where younger wolves were already gathering to celebrate, past the training grounds, all the way to the healer's quarters at the edge of the compound.

The door closed behind me and I leaned against it, my hand still pressed to the cold mark.

The biological cost hit me in waves. Phantom pain pulsed through the dead bond like my body couldn't accept that the connection was gone. My chest ached. My wolf—the faint, fragile thing I'd been trying to coax awake for years—was gone so completely I couldn't even feel the space she used to occupy. It was a new species of alone, and it was so much worse than I'd imagined.

I didn't cry.

I walked to the small washbasin in the corner, splashed cold water on my face, and looked at myself in the cracked mirror. Same brown eyes. Same unremarkable features. Same healer's apprentice who'd spent three years making herself smaller, quieter, more useful, all for a bond that had just been severed in front of three hundred witnesses.

I pulled the small vial of wolfsbane-laced tea from my pocket—the daily dose I'd been taking for three years to suppress the faint royal scent I'd inherited from a bloodline I barely remembered. I stared at it for a long moment.

Then I poured it down the drain.

Not a plan. Not yet. But the first morning I'd let myself feel both terrified and, for a single moment, entirely myself.

A knock sounded at the door.

I opened it to find Dr. Maren Cross standing in the hallway, her weathered face unreadable. She didn't ask if I was all right. She didn't offer sympathy. She just looked at me with those sharp, assessing eyes that had always seen more than I was comfortable with.

"You'll report to the dispensary at dawn," she said quietly. "We have work to do."

She turned to leave, then paused. "And Charley? Stop drinking that tea."

She was gone before I could respond.

I closed the door and stood in the dark, my hand still pressed to the cold bond mark. Outside, I could hear the celebration continuing—howls and laughter and the sounds of wolves who belonged.

I didn't belong anymore.

But for the first time in three years, I wondered if that might be the thing that finally set me free.
