Chapter 5

Three days before the Ascension, I laid the pieces of Wesley’s ruin across the small desk in my quarters.

There were Maren’s signed medical logs, proving the monthly blood siphon that had kept his shattered wolf alive. There were the Ironveil treasury sheets showing eight months of embezzlement, cross-referenced against the scanned pages of Lydia’s ciphered notebook. Beside them lay the border-patrol photographs of her human biker lover, Griffin, along with the airtight, scent-proof bag holding Wesley’s pheromone-stained scarf.

I arranged them inside a stiff black leather folder I had bought with my own wages months ago. On the divider tabs, I wrote each exhibit in neat, steady print: *Medical records. Embezzlement logs. Scent evidence. Border violations.*

I pulled my pocket copy of the Lycan Council’s legal codex from my coat and turned to Section Twelve. The Pack Accountability Accord. I checked the citation line by line against the protocol text, verifying every subclause I had committed to memory. Everything was ironclad.

Satisfied, I lifted the false bottom of the cedar chest at the foot of my cot. I placed the dossier flat against the wood, set the thin protective panel over it, and rested the delicate parchment sleeve holding my foster mother’s pressed wildflower right on top. Then I closed the heavy lid.

***

The morning of the ceremony arrived with a sky the color of wet slate.

I stood in front of the small mirror, dressed in the only formal suit I owned—a fitted charcoal blazer and dark slacks bought off the rack in town with money Wesley had never known about. No silks. No pack colors. Just clean, tailored wool.

I went to the cedar chest, pulled up the false bottom, and retrieved the pressed flower. The petals were faded yellow, papery and fragile against my thumb. It was the last thing my human foster mother had pressed into my palm before I moved to Ironveil, telling me to remember who I was even when things felt too big.

I slipped the blossom carefully into the interior lining of my blazer, right against my ribs. Beside it went the heavy leather dossier, tucked flat against my waist.

I stepped back to the mirror. The hollow look in my eyes was gone. My skin looked rested, the faint gray cast from years of bloodloss completely vanished.

Deep behind my breastbone, a slow, furnace-like warmth rippled through my veins.

*Ready?* Serafine asked. Her voice was smooth like oiled iron, purring through my marrow.

*Yes,* I answered silently.

I picked up the black folder, stepped out into the hallway, and pulled the door shut behind me.

***

The great hall was suffocatingly crowded.

Over four hundred wolves packed the space, their mingled scents of pine, leather, sweat, and wet fur pressing against the vaulted stone ceiling. Flags bearing the sigils of six allied packs hung from the timber rafters. At the front, seated on elevated benches beneath the silver crest of the high throne, sat the Lycan Council delegates. They wore long, charcoal-grey coats, their faces stern and impassive.

Wesley stood at the center of the raised dais. He wore the traditional Alpha regalia—a midnight-blue jacket trimmed in silver braid, tailored to showcase the broad cut of his shoulders. His slate-grey wolf’s aura rolled off him in deliberate waves, a heavy, suffocating pressure meant to assert total dominance over the room.

Just off the platform stood Lydia. She was dressed in an ivory silk gown that shimmered under the chandeliers, positioned squarely in the spot pack law reserved for an Alpha’s Luna. At her neck, gleaming with cold fire, sat my moonstone pendant.

In the front row, Wesley’s parents sat with their chins tilted high. Evelyn Hale dabbed a silk handkerchief at her dry eyes, basking in the murmurs of respect flowing from the elder councilmen.

I remained near the double oak doors at the back, standing by the stone pillar in the shadow of the gallery stairs. I kept the leather folder pressed flat against my hip. No one gave me a second glance. To the guards and visiting dignitaries, I was just another nameless Omega standing where the staff belonged.

On the dais, Wesley stepped to the silver ceremonial microphone. The crowd’s low rumble tapered off into an absolute, expectant hush.

Wesley didn't speak right away. He let the silence hang, drinking in the spectacle. He scanned the rows of four hundred wolves, his eyes sweeping across the councilmen, past his mother, until they stopped on me.

He found my face in the shadows.

His head tilted slightly to the right. That familiar, ugly smirk curled the corner of his mouth, holding the silence for one beat, two beats, savoring the cruelty before he delivered the blow. He thought he was about to put an insolent stray in her place before the entire world.

He leaned down into the microphone. His voice rang out through the hall, clear, resonant, and dripping with rehearsed authority.

"I, Wesley Hale, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Anya, as my mate and Luna."
