Chapter 3

The small pool of yellow lamplight on my wooden desk was the only brightness in the room.

For two straight nights, while Wesley slept his heavy, whiskey-soaked sleep in the guest room down the hall, I sat alone with my phone and a pad of grid paper.

The photos I had taken of Lydia’s maroon ledger glowed on the small screen. Her handwriting was sharp, almost frantic, disguised beneath an odd blend of Thornfield pack dialect and standard human shorthand. But when you spend three years balancing grocery receipts down to the penny, patterns speak louder than words.

It took until nearly three in the morning of the second night for the cipher to crack.

The numbers lined up with cold, mathematical precision. For eight solid months, Lydia had been skimming a steady twenty-five percent off the top of every hidden deposit Wesley funneled into her accounts. She wasn’t just spending his money on silk robes and imported tile for the cabin. She was routing it straight out of Ironveil’s territory into an off-grid human bank account.

Every single transfer was addressed to the same recipient, noted only as a single letter: *G.*

Nine hundred dollars here. Two thousand there. A steady, calculated siphon.

I leaned back in my chair, pressing two fingers hard against the bruised vein on my left wrist. My chest felt hollow, but my mind was terrifyingly clear. Lydia wasn't an infatuated she-wolf swept away by an Alpha heir's charms. She was a professional tick, bleeding him dry before he even had the crown on his head.

I opened my dossier, slipped the decoded breakdown between the treasury pages, and wrote a single word in the margin with a dark pencil:

*Griffin?*

The name came back to me from an offhand remark Wesley’s mother had made weeks ago about Lydia’s "cousin" who worked odd mechanic jobs down south. It had smelled off back then. Now, it reeked.

The next morning, I took the laundry basket down through the administration wing. The morning air smelled like damp stone and stale coffee. When the front desk clerk stepped away for his ten-minute cigarette break, I didn't hesitate. I slipped behind the partition and pulled the border-patrol archive files from the lower cabinet.

I flipped straight to the lake district logs from the last six months.

It didn't take long to find them. Three separate incident reports had been flagged by eastern perimeter guards, all dated between May and August. Each entry noted an unfamiliar human male on a black motorcycle idling at the gravel turnaround near the edge of the woods. Each time, the patrol had observed him meeting a she-wolf who matched Lydia's exact build and amber scent.

Beneath each incident was the same rubber-stamped verdict: *No threat assessment required. Subject recognized as authorized guest of Alpha-heir Hale.*

They hadn't even bothered to run the motorcycle's plates. Wesley's arrogance had shielded her completely.

Attached to the last incident report was a grainy black-and-white surveillance print taken from the tree-line camera. The man was broad-shouldered and thick-necked, leaning against his bike with a cigarette dangling from his lips. Across the back of his heavy leather cut was the faded white insignia of a human biker gang from northern California.

Lydia stood next to him in the photo, her hand resting casually on his hip. It was not the posture of a terrified girl meeting her cousin.

I laid the photograph flat against the scanner on the desk, printed two crisp copies, and slid the original back into the folder. I shut the file drawer with a soft, clean click.

In my black notebook, beside the word *Griffin*, I wrote *“cousin”* in quotation marks.

Then I drew a single, clean line straight through it.

***

By Thursday, Wesley had stopped pretending altogether.

With the Alpha Ascension only days away, his ego had swollen to the point of blindness. He felt untouchable. He spent nearly every afternoon at the lake cabin, not even bothering to wash Lydia's spiced-vanilla scent from his skin when he returned. Twice, he drove her straight past the eastern sentry post in his truck, letting her sit high in the passenger seat with the window rolled down.

The younger guards and omegas noticed. I heard them whispering in the kitchen while I wiped down the counters, exchanging nervous, sidelong glances. They knew the mate mark on my neck was supposed to mean something. In Ironveil, an Alpha taking an open mistress before his formal coronation was an insult to the pack traditions.

Wesley didn't care. To him, the rules were things he wrote, not things he followed.

On Friday afternoon, I was carrying a stack of revised seating charts down the corridor outside the administrative hall when heavy footsteps echoed against the flags behind me.

"Anya."

I stopped and turned.

Wesley stood there in a tailored charcoal suit, his hands shoved casually into his trouser pockets. He looked handsome in the way men do when they have never had to pay for their own mistakes. His chin was high, his cedarwood scent tainted with that familiar, cloying vanilla.

He looked me up and down, his eyes lingering on my faded cotton dress with faint distaste. He tilted his head slightly to the right—that habitual tell he had whenever he was about to deliver an insult—and let the silence stretch for five full seconds.

"The Lycan Council delegates arrive tomorrow morning," he said, his voice flat, dropped into that low, practiced Alpha register. "Representatives from six allied packs are already checking into the estate lodge. The hall will be full."

"I know," I said quietly.

"I need you composed," he said, taking a half-step closer. His presence was meant to intimidate, to crowd the oxygen out of the narrow hall. "I don't want downcast eyes. I don't want you shaking. When we walk onto that dais, you will stand tall, smile at Theron’s delegates, and look like an Alpha’s mate."

He reached out, his fingers catching my chin with just enough force to pinch the bone.

"Three hours," Wesley murmured, staring down into my face with cold, contemptuous confidence. "That is all I need from you. A convincing performance. After the Council leaves, you can crawl back into the kitchen where you belong. But do not embarrass me on that stage."

The spark beneath my ribs flickered, burning hot and steady against the freeze in my blood. I didn't pull away. I didn't flinch.

I looked straight into his slate-grey eyes.

"Of course, Alpha," I said.

My voice was entirely smooth. It contained no tears, no hurt, and no hesitation. It sounded like empty stone.

Wesley’s lips curled into a smug, satisfied smirk. He released my chin, convinced he had broken whatever quiet resistance was left in me.

"Good girl," he said, brushing past my shoulder. "Try not to be late."

I stood in the dim corridor, listening to the sharp, confident rhythm of his boots fading down the hall.

He thought he had bought my obedience.

He didn't realize that when a wolf stops crying, it’s only because she’s chosen her target.
