Chapter 3

I was still standing when Grigor raised his hand.

One sharp gesture, palm out, and Dalton's attorney stopped mid-sentence like someone had cut a wire. The man blinked, looked at Grigor, and sat down without another word. That was the kind of authority the Lycan King's emissary carried — not loud, not performative. Just absolute.

The hall went quiet.

Grigor hadn't moved from his seat at the high table. His silver head was tilted slightly, his eyes fixed on some middle distance that wasn't quite the floor and wasn't quite me. His nostrils moved. Barely. Just once.

Then he went still.

Not the stillness of a man thinking. The stillness of a man who has stopped breathing because what he is smelling has knocked the breath clean out of him.

I watched him rise from his chair. He crossed the floor slowly, deliberately, like a man approaching something that might bolt if he moved too fast. He stopped three feet in front of me. The record book was still open on the table behind him. No one in the hall made a sound.

He inhaled again. Long. Careful.

And then every line in his face changed.

"Amelia Hartley," he said. His voice was low. Controlled. The voice of a man who has spent decades delivering news — good and terrible both — without letting his own reaction contaminate the room. "Before this Tribunal continues, I am required under Council law to verify your lineage."

Something cold moved through me. "My lineage?"

"Your scent." He looked at me directly now, and there was something in his eyes I couldn't name — not pity, not shock, but a kind of careful grief, like a man recognizing a face he thought he'd never see again. "It carries a signature I am not permitted to ignore."

Across the hall, Dalton shifted in his chair. I heard it — the small scrape of wood on stone — and I didn't look at him.

"The Lycan King's bloodline," Grigor said quietly, "has a scent that cannot be replicated and cannot be mistaken. I have encountered it twice in my career. Once in the throne room, and once—" He paused. "Once twenty-two years ago, during the investigation into the disappearance of the infant Princess."

The silence in the hall was a different kind now. Thick. Airless.

"Amelia Hartley." He said my name again, and then, beneath it, like a second note in a chord I had never heard before, he said another name. A name I didn't recognize. A name that was apparently mine.

The hall erupted.

I didn't hear most of it. The voices hit me like a wall of sound — shock, disbelief, someone near the back saying *that's impossible* loud enough to carry — but it was all very far away, because something else was happening.

Something was happening to me.

It started at the base of my spine. A pressure. Then a heat. Then something that had no name in the human language I'd been living in for twenty-five years — something vast and silver and very, very old tearing upward through me like a root system ripping free of soil that was never deep enough to hold it.

I grabbed the edge of the petitioner's table.

The wood cracked under my fingers.

I felt my skin split with light before I saw it — silver, not the warm gold of a normal shift, but cold and bright as moonlight on open water. It ran up my forearms in fracture lines. Fur rippled along my skin in a wave I was not controlling, had never controlled, had never even known was waiting inside me.

My wolf was rising, and she was not asking permission.

The aura hit the room before the shift did. I felt it leave me like a pressure wave — not a decision, not a choice, just something that had been compressed for twenty-five years suddenly taking up the space it was always meant to occupy. The wolves nearest to me stumbled backward. A Beta three rows back sat down hard on the bench without meaning to. Someone made a choked sound.

At the Alpha's podium, I heard Dalton's chair scrape back.

I heard his knees hit the floor.

I didn't look at him. I couldn't. I was holding on to the table and trying to breathe through the silver fire running up my spine, and my wolf was tearing free — enormous, the largest wolf I had ever felt from the inside, fur the color of a winter moon, aura so dense the hanging lanterns in the hall guttered and flickered in their iron brackets.

Every wolf in the room dropped their eyes.

Every single one. Beta, Gamma, Delta. The guards by the door. Corwin Blake, who had spent three years handing Dalton scrolls to sign over my work. All of them, throats bared, eyes down, pressed back against the walls of the hall like the tide going out.

And Dalton — my mate who rejected me four days ago, who said my name in a vow meant to erase me, who didn't even look down when I bled on the platform stone — Dalton knelt on the floor of his own formal hall with his chin against his chest and his hands flat on the ground.

I stood in the wreckage of everything he thought I was.

And I finally looked at him.
