Chapter 5

Lilith came back the next night with the vial in her hand.

She didn't hide it. She walked into the basement holding it between her thumb and forefinger like a piece of jewelry she wanted admired, and she set it on the edge of my cot with a small, deliberate click of glass against wood. The liquid inside was dark. Almost black. Concentrated to the point where I could smell it through the stopper.

"I thought you should see it," she said. "The maintenance doses will stop. I don't need them anymore."

She sat on the stool. She arranged her robe.

I looked at the vial. I looked at her.

My wolf, behind my ribs, went completely still. Not passive. The stillness of something that has just been given the last piece of a puzzle it has been building for weeks.

"You've been very patient, Florence," Lilith continued, warm and pleasant. "I've admired that. Truly. But patience has its limits, and I think we're both tired of the pretense."

I pressed my fingertips to the inside of my wrist. I let the pulse settle beneath them.

I weighed what to say. I weighed how much room to give her.

"You should keep that somewhere safe," I said.

My voice was quiet. Precise. Final in the way a door is final when it closes.

Lilith's smile flickered. She recovered fast. She heard what she wanted to hear—resignation, submission, the small collapse of a woman too tired to fight—and she picked up the vial and slid it back into the inner pocket of her robe, patting it once through the fabric.

"Good girl," she said.

She left.

I sat on the cot after the door locked. My hands didn't shake. My face didn't move.

She was carrying the evidence on her body. She was carrying it herself, personally, because she didn't trust anyone else to hold it and didn't imagine anyone would ever take it from her. I closed my eyes and filed the information into the ledger I kept in my head, next to the dates and the supplier's name.

*She just told us where the knife lives,* my wolf said.

"Yes," I answered, internal and quiet.

---

The kitchen staff whispered through breakfast the next morning while I scrubbed the flagstones at their feet.

"—in the strategy meeting, mid-sentence, his aura just—stopped. Reed said three of the seniors looked at each other."

"Declan found him outside the basement door again. Sitting on the floor this time. Just sitting."

"He's announcing a solo patrol tonight. Solo. He hasn't run one since—"

"Don't say it."

"He's not well."

"Don't say it aloud."

I dipped my brush. I moved to the next flagstone. My hands burned. I kept my face turned toward the stone.

The phantom scent was eating him. The bond he had cut with his own mouth was gnawing at his wolf from the inside, and the pack knew it now—knew it well enough to whisper it while an Omega scrubbed at their feet, because Omegas didn't count as witnesses.

I catalogued that too.

Later in the morning I heard a different whisper, farther down the corridor, from one of Reed's warriors passing through. A rogue caught near the eastern boundary. A message intercepted. Lycan observers requested at the border.

The word *Lycan* stopped my hand for a fraction of a second. I resumed scrubbing before anyone noticed.

I didn't know what it meant. I noted it anyway. Everything went into the ledger now.

---

My evening water tasted wrong on the first sip.

Not the metallic burn of the maintenance dose. Something denser. Sweeter at the edges, the way concentrated wolfsbane sweetens when it is thick enough to kill.

I knew before I swallowed.

I swallowed anyway. There was no advantage in refusing. She had two loyalists posted at the top of the stairs and one at the yard door, and if I didn't drink she would find another way, and this way I could at least control when it started.

My vision fractured within four minutes.

The basement doubled and slid. My legs went numb from the knees down. I tried to stand and the floor came up to meet my shoulder. My wolf slammed against the inside of my chest and hit a wall—the wolfsbane, thick as tar, pinning her down.

The door opened. Boots. Lilith's voice, pleased and quiet.

"Get her up. She won't fight."

They lifted me by my arms. My head lolled. I tried to form a word and my tongue wouldn't move around it. They dragged me through the rear passage, past the kitchen where the whispers had been that morning, out into the dark yard.

The air was cold. Moonless. I could smell pine, and stone, and beyond it, the deep openness of the eastern cliff.

We crossed the yard. We crossed the treeline. My legs bumped over roots I couldn't feel. Lilith walked ahead, her white robe catching what little light there was, and I heard her say something to one of the loyalists that ended in a laugh.

The ravine wind hit my face when we reached the ledge. I felt the drop before I saw it. Two hundred feet of nothing, and rocks at the bottom, and Lilith's hand on my back arranging me for the shove.

My wolf hit the wolfsbane wall one more time.

Something behind it gave.

Her voice cracked through my skull—not a whisper anymore, not a snarl. A roar that filled every empty space the poison had hollowed out.
