Chapter 1

At 11:42 on a Thursday night, the mate mark on my neck went ice-cold.

It felt like someone had pressed a frozen silver coin into my flesh. For three years, that spot had pulsed with a steady, quiet warmth. Now it went totally hollow, like a heavy iron door slamming shut in an empty hallway.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. Unknown number. Video call.

I answered. Lainey Pierce’s face filled the screen. She was sitting in a plush leather armchair, wearing ivory silk and a smug, sharp grin. In her manicured hand, she held up an embossed card with silver leafing.

She tilted it directly toward the lens.

*Mate Ceremony of Lainey Pierce and Bodie Mason, Alpha of Ironvale.*

My breath caught once, but my hands didn't shake. The mark on my neck burned with a sudden phantom chill, and over the connection, I could practically smell it—cloying gardenia perfume layered thick over Bodie’s familiar cedar scent.

"Surprised, sweetie?" Lainey purred, leaning closer. "Bodie said you were quiet, but I didn't think you were completely blind. Did you really believe an Alpha with his ambition would stay tied to an Omega who can’t even shift?"

She lifted her other hand. Draped across her fingers was a delicate silver chain holding a milky, glowing gem.

My chest went tight. It was the twin moonstone relic from my private vault.

"He gave me this tonight as our marking token," she laughed, running a red nail over the gem. "He told me it was his family’s ancient treasure. A gift for a real Luna. Too bad you never gave him anything worth keeping."

She cut the call with a high, mocking giggle.

The screen went black.

Down in the dark center of my chest, something huge and ancient slammed against its bars. My wolf—dormant for three years beneath the concealing amulet tucked beneath my shirt—bared her fangs. A low, vibrating snarl echoed through my skull.

I didn't cry. I didn't break down.

I walked straight past the bedroom mirror down to the basement archives behind the pack library. I punched a six-digit code into the heavy steel safe behind the false wall. The lock clicked open.

The velvet box on the top shelf was empty. The relic was gone.

Below it lay three leather-bound binders filled with dense cipher. I opened them, flipping through pages of treaties, supply lines, and warrior pacts. Every single contract had been signed under Lycan King Harold's royal authority. I had brokered every deal myself, handing Bodie a thriving pack on a silver platter while he strutted around thinking he had built it with his bare hands.

*He knew,* my wolf growled, pacing behind my ribs. *He used every drop of it. He was never going to stop.*

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist, right where the suppressing amulet's chain bit into my skin. One breath. That was all it took.

I pulled out my burner satellite phone and dialed a number I had memorized a decade ago.

It rang once.

"Serenity."

My father's voice was low, deep, and heavy with sovereign authority.

"Father," I said. My voice was calm and steady. "Bodie took the twin moonstone. He is holding a Mate Ceremony with Lainey Pierce. He funded his ceremony guard with rogue mercenaries and promised them royal territory."

A heavy silence hung on the line. Then came the soft scrape of a fountain pen signing across parchment.

"The endorsement is dead," King Harold said, his tone turning to absolute steel. "Effective at dawn, every Lycan supply convoy reroutes. All territorial protection ends. Ironvale stands alone."

"Thank you, Your Majesty," I said quietly.

There was a long pause. For twenty years, he had waited for the hidden princess to speak instead of the quiet girl playing house.

"Bring yourself home, my girl," he murmured.

"Soon," I said, and ended the call.

Next, I dialed Eduardo.

"Little one?" the old warrior answered instantly, his gravelly voice alert despite the hour.

"Prepare the cedar chest," I told him. "Drape it in black."

The line went dead silent. A black-draped cedar chest was a traditional werewolf death offering—the formal symbol of a mate bond severed by blood and betrayal.

"Are you certain?" Eduardo asked softly.

"I am."

"I will reach the southern border before sundown tomorrow," he said. "Do not let them see your hands shake."

"They won't," I replied.

I hung up. I didn't sleep a wink.

At seven the next morning, Bodie walked into the bright kitchen.

He wore a tailored charcoal shirt that showed off his broad Alpha build. He looked radiant, wearing the relaxed, self-satisfied grin of a man who thought the world belonged to him. He walked up behind me at the stove, slid an arm around my waist, and kissed the crown of my head.

"Morning, beautiful," he murmured, pouring coffee into his favorite mug. "You're up early."

The faint, synthetic stench of gardenia lingered under his sandalwood aftershave.

"Just making sure you have what you need," I said, turning with a warm, placid smile.

"Pack meetings all day," he said, sighing with practiced exhaustion as he rubbed his neck. "Border patrols, council reviews. You know how demanding the elders are. It never ends."

"You work so hard for us," I said gently, handing him his packed lunch.

"Someone has to keep this pack safe," he said, flashing his boyish, charming grin. He grabbed his truck keys off the counter and stepped toward the back door.

Just as his fingers closed around the doorknob, his phone blared on the counter, auto-connecting to his truck's Bluetooth speaker outside.

Lainey’s voice blasted through the open window, high and impatient:

*"Bodie, where are you? The rogue mercenaries just cleared the gate with the ceremony swords—get your ass over here!"*

Bodie froze, his hand locked on the brass handle.
