Chapter 5

Rowan’s clinic smelled of crushed cedar and bitter herbs. I sat on the edge of the examination table, watching the gray-eyed healer measure drops of dried thistle into a glass beaker.

The heavy oak door swung open.

Desmond stepped into the room. He filled the doorway, his massive shoulders blocking the hall light. Behind him, the corridor seemed to shrink.

Rowan bowed his head slightly. "Your Grace. Thank you for coming. We need to review the parameters of the bloodline rite before the next moon."

Desmond nodded once. "Proceed."

His scent flooded the small room. Black pine and winter rain. It hit the back of my throat, cold and sharp and impossibly clean.

Deep behind my ribs, in the freezing hollow where my wolf used to live, something twitched.

It was faint. A tiny, terrified shudder. The ghost of a bond reached out from him toward me, extending like an open hand through pitch-black water. It didn't push. It didn't demand. It just hovered there, waiting.

My spine went rigid. My hands gripped the edge of the examination table until my knuckles turned white.

"I cannot trust another bond," I said.

My voice was quiet, clipped, and clinical. I didn't yell. I didn't look down. I held his dark eyes with everything I had left.

Desmond didn't flinch. He didn't offer a hollow promise. He didn't unleash an Alpha tone to crush my defiance. He just stood there, looking at me with total, unblinking focus.

"I am not asking you to," he said. His voice was low, like thunder rolling miles away beneath the earth. "Rowan will see you again tomorrow morning. I will be outside the door if you need anything."

He turned and walked out. The latch clicked shut.

I sat alone on the paper-covered table. I pressed my thumb hard against the pulse point on my left wrist, feeling the rapid, jagged beat beneath my skin. I closed my eyes and searched the darkness inside my chest.

There was still no wolf. The void was still empty.

But for the first time in weeks, the empty space felt fractionally less cold.

Weeks slipped past in quiet succession.

Desmond canceled two consecutive Lycan Council sessions to sit in the corner of Rowan’s clinic during my appointments. His senior advisors grumbled openly in the courtyard about missed border reviews, but Desmond never offered an excuse. He simply sat in an armless wooden chair by the herb shelves, watching Rowan adjust my tinctures. He didn't make small talk. He didn't reach out to touch my arm. He was just there—steady, immovable, anchoring the room with his presence.

One evening, the wolfsbane withdrawal hit me like a physical blow.

A wave of dizzy sickness slammed into my temples as I tried to walk the east corridor back to my suite. My knees gave out. My shoulder hit the rough stone wall.

A shadow fell over me.

Before my knees could hit the flagstones, Desmond shifted.

There was no warning crack of bone, no hesitation. In a breath, a massive Lycan wolf stood in the hallway. His fur was dense and charcoal-gray, tipped with silver. He was colossal—easily twice the size of Dillon’s wolf—radiating a wall of living heat.

He didn't growl. He dipped his massive head, nudged his snout gently under my arm, and scooped me up onto his broad back.

My fingers sank into his thick fur. His body curled around me with absolute care, shielding my stomach from the drafty stone. I drifted in and out of consciousness to the steady, deep thud of his heart against my ribs. Black pine and rain filled my lungs, washing away the metallic taste of poison in my mouth.

He carried me all the way into my bedchamber. With infinite gentleness, he lowered me onto the down mattress.

He shifted back into his human form, his breath steady in the dark room. He pulled the wool blanket over my shoulders.

He didn't ask for a thank-you. He didn't say a word. He simply turned and pulled the door shut behind him.

Two days later, I was sitting in the sunlit library next to the council hall when Lena walked into Desmond's adjoining study.

"My King," Lena said through the open door, her tone crisp. "Our scouts confirmed it. The moonstone pendant is currently around Giuliana’s neck at Ironvale. Dillon presented it to her at the pack dinner."

A second of dead silence hung in the air.

"Retrieve it," Desmond replied. His voice was dangerously soft.

"Understood," Lena said. "I will dispatch an operative within the hour. A formal Lycan Court requisition order. Protected artifact of ancient bloodline heritage. Dillon is a vassal Alpha. He has no legal standing to refuse the royal seal."

Within forty-eight hours, the operative was back.

I didn't know the mission had succeeded. Late that evening, I walked down the dim basement corridor to fetch a fresh vial of willow bark from the dispensary.

The door to Rowan’s private laboratory stood cracked open an inch. A faint amber light spilled onto the floorboards.

I stopped in the shadows.

Lena stood by the stone hearth, holding a small wooden box. Rowan stood beside her over a bronze purification basin filled with steaming spring water.

Lena lifted the moonstone pendant from the velvet lining. Dillon’s stolen gift.

She dropped it into the steaming basin. A hiss rose from the water. Giuliana's sticky, artificial lily scent burned away in a thin wisp of gray smoke, dissolving into nothingness.

Lena didn't speak to me. She hadn't breathed a word to Desmond, either. From her leather coat, she pulled out a delicate, glittering chain forged from ceremonial Lycan-silver—sacred metal taken straight from the royal vaults.

Rowan used silver tongs to lift the dripping, purified stone from the basin and laid it on the workstation. Lena brought the Lycan-silver chain down to loop through the setting.

The instant the ceremonial silver touched the raw moonstone, the air cracked like lightning.

A blinding shockwave of white-gold light erupted from the stone. The glow flared across the room, searing into the ceiling and projecting the massive, glowing sigil of a crowned, silver-furred wolf.

Rowan stumbled backward, knocking over a tray of glass vials. His silver tongs clattered loudly against the stone floor.

His face drained of all color.

"Goddess help us," Rowan whispered, his hands trembling as the blazing light reflected in his eyes. "That isn't a pack artifact. That stone answers only to the First Royal Bloodline."
