Chapter 2

EMERY'S POV

"Congratulations, baby," My mother said, and my sister smiled, saying,

"Thank you, mom. We were sitting opposite each other in our living room. We weren't ranked werewolves, but we weren't omegas either, just regular wolves.

Wasn't even expecting my sister to be here at home. I thought by now she would already have the mark of Beta James on her, but guess she's here to act like a lovely daughter and inform our mother about it.

"I'm so glad the Alpha welcomed you in," My mother said, and Emilia blushed.

"I wasn't expecting it too, he knew the moment me and James walked hand in hand, so he decided to announce it, warning all the unmated to back off..." Emilia said, and I felt those words were being directed at me.

"That's how nice the Alpha can be." My mother nodded her head in agreement, still with a smile.

She must be very happy that one of her daughters finally found her mate. Now she will stop worrying because I don't want her to anymore. She has done enough for us already, ever since my dad passed away, but I never got to meet him, nor does my mom love to speak about him, she turned to our guardians.

Always protecting us and doesn't make us lack anything at all. I suddenly wished to be by her side forever. It's sad that my sister mated the beta of our pack, so she won't be moving away from our pack and will still be here, dragging the only person I love with me.

 "Umm Emery, I..."

"Oh, shut it." I beat her to it. I'm still angry about the nonsense she sprouted on stage when she was asked to say something by the Alpha.

"Are you angry at me?" She asked with an innocent look, and I felt the urge to go over there and pinched her cheeks until she bleed but knowing my sister...that's when she will beat me to death because she's stronger.

"If I'm angry at you? Like, is that even a question?" I asked, forcing her to glance at my mom and then at me.

"What did you do, Emilia?" My mother asked as if sensing my anger.

"Nothing mom, I don't understand why she's mad at..."

"Are you crazy? When you announced me to the whole crowd, you didn't know what you did?" I can still remember how everyone was staring at me. Like the people from my pack made the guests realize who she was talking about...me.

"I was only encouraging you," She said in a low voice. I can't seem to fathom why my sister is always calm whenever we're around my mom. She acts like she so much cares for me, and my mom still sees us as the lovely twins that we were once known for.

"So you mean you were trying to encourage me when you said this....Hi everyone, I'm so glad that I've finally found my mate and didn't get rejected, so I'm telling all the unmated out there to not give up and keep searching, especially my twin sister Emery. You might be wolfless and unmated, but believe me, both will come for you. Your wolf will show her face, and your mate will love you wholeheartedly." Just as I love you...scratch that part because my sister can never love me.

"Did you say all that, baby?" My mother questioned my sister. "I was only trying to encourage her," Emilia replied.

"By telling everybody about the girl with no wolf yet her twin as one," I said.

"It's not my fault you don't have one, yet you were able to recognize my mate as yours too," She said and the anger I had dissipated. I was literally trying to forget that part, but here she was reminding me all about it.

"What?"

"Honey, did you recognize your mate?" It was my turn to be questioned, and I glared at Emilia. I wasn't going to say it to my mom, and I thought Emilia was doing the same too since she never mentioned it, but guess she's saying it to make my mom mad at me as I did to her.

"I..I...I..it don't matter," I said, not finding a word to say.

"Yes it does, Emery. I was dancing with a guy when I felt the strange pull. I turned around and saw him starring at me, and I smiled as my wolf recognized him as my mate. I rushed towards him, and before I called him my mate, you were already there addressing him as your mate, which is so shocking and surprising..." Emilia narrated her part. So he was staring at her and not me? Oh, now I know I was indeed mistaken.

"Honey, is it true? Did you recognized the beta as your mate?" My mom suddenly rushed to my side, and the anger that once dissipated rose up again, but it wasn't directed at my mom but Emilia.

"No it's just something I thought I felt and then..."

"Tell me all about it, honey." My mom interrupted me, and I glanced at my sister, who also seemed interested too. I sighed and decided to explain myself.

"I umm... I was about to go grab a drink when I felt a sudden pull and my stomach churn. It was so mighty and powerful like it was calling onto me strongly, and I turned around and saw him starring at me. Something in me leaped up in excitement, and a word was forcing it's ways out of my lips "Mate" and I just said it...but now we know he wasn't starring at me but Emilia." My head drops down with my hair falling to my front in sadness. I felt a warm and soft hand on my hair, and I knew it was that of my mom.

"Do you still feel it?" She questioned. I stared at her, trying to think about it, but I don't. I remember feeling severe pain when he said those words that were more like a rejection. I guess I've finally accepted it. "No, just...nothing"

"Listen honey, I understand how you feel...just maybe it was the twins telepathy stuff, that somehow you felt your sister's feelings instead, the twins bond stuff," My mother said, rubbing on my hair. That's exactly what my head is registering to me.

But why am I the only one feeling the twins stuff? Why doesn't she feel it too?

"It's not fair, mom, why am I the only one feeling it?" I muttered with a low voice, which I knew Emilia heard.

"Like I don't feel it too?" She scoffed.

"Oh you don't, because if you do, then you wouldn't be able to do those things you do to me all the time!" I shouted. My sister can't actually feel the twins telepathy if not, she would have died of heartache coming from me.

"What things are you referring to?" She asked, sitting straight as if getting ready for a real conversation with me. Since she's ready for it, I will give it back to her. My mother is here, so Emilia won't be able to lash out on me when she gets angry.

"When you beat me around and inflict scars all over my body? Humiliating me publicly and making me look like an outcast just because I don't have a freaking wolf. Do you know how I cry myself to sleep, and as the day grows by, I become sad? Do you feel it don't tell me you do because it won't be able to sit right with you!" I yelled, and silence dropped. Tears found their way out of my eyes as I stared at her, and I could see an emotion written on her face.

Sadness...but why is she sad, she's my nightmare and my tormentor. I can't unhate her.

"All this while I was running to come help you, all those while I appeared when you never expected me to was because I felt it, it was because I felt you. I will be happy, and the next minute I'm sad, I will quickly know it was coming from you, and then I will start looking for you to console you. All those times you got hurt, I felt it too, but never for once did you feel anything coming from me, it always makes me wonder if we're even twins or if my mother is just faming it all up and..."

"EMERY!" My mother called harshly, and I brought my eyes down. From the corner of my eyes, I could see Emilia doing the same as her shoulders were moving up and down. Is she crying? I just couldn't help but wonder.

"You won't ever say such a word ever again!" She warned angrily.

"But my twin sister hates me as much as the pack does, we're not that sweet girl you birthed mother, we aren't your baby and honey anymore, we are enemies sworn enemies, that if any of us were to be given the opportunity to kill another, then we will gladly do it." My mouth was running on its accord, and I didn't bother stopping it.

It's better I let all the emotions out so the burden I'm carrying will lessen. Silence - silence grew as nobody was saying a word, and then I thought it was the best.

I've been harboring that thoughts for quite some time now, and since my sister found her mate, it's time I do it....I want to go far away from here.

"I will be going over to the human world to live among them," I voiced out, and my sister sprang up from the couch.

"You won't do such a thing!" She said with a high-pitched voice as my frown deepened. Why does she seem to care?. I opened my mouth to reply to her when my mother interrupted me.

"Shh..." She said standing up on alert, and I immediately followed suit. I watched her move closer to the windows, and my heart started beating against my ribcage...fear is that you?

"What is it mom?" I asked, trying to mask my shaky voice, and suddenly a loud bang came from our door.

"Emilia, take your sister upstairs!!" My mother shouted, taking her clothes off to shift.

"Come on" My sister pulled my hands, dragging me upstairs hurriedly, when a loud howl came in. What's going on? Are we under  an attack?

"Stay here" Was her last word before she ran down, leaving me alone. I felt the urge to go after them, but what can I do? I'm totally useless.

I wish I had a wolf like them. My tears prickled, and I quickly wiped it knowing it's not the time for tears. Immediately a sharp and painful pain hit me, it was like my heart was being splitted into two and I quickly recognized who it was when a familiar growl followed.

"Emilia!!" My legs found their way down the stairs, pushing the door open with full force, and the sight that was before me shook me to death.

 "Mother!"

I smoothed down the silver ceremonial dress one last time, my fingers trembling slightly against the simple fabric. It wasn't the elaborate gown that Sophia would likely wear, but it was the best I had—a hand-me-down from my mother's youth, carefully preserved for special occasions. Today was certainly special. Today, Alexander would finally announce our courtship to the allied packs. "You look beautiful, Luna," Rose whispered from her bed, her voice thin but her smile radiant. At thirteen, my sister's wolf-sickness had left her too weak to attend the ceremony, another cruel reminder of our family's fallen status. "I wish you could come with me," I said, sitting beside her on the bed. I pulled out the small leather pouch of protective charms I'd gathered—tiny moonstone beads, dried wolfsbane flowers, and silver thread. "Then I'll be there in spirit." Rose turned, presenting her back to me. "Braid them in?" I worked the charms into her hair with practiced fingers, weaving protection and love into each strand.

Why bother keeping her alive now?" Trenton’s voice was as cold as the steel of a blade. "She cost me and Laylani our child.

My hands trembled as I smoothed my dress, waiting for Alpha Arthur to return. He had survived the transplant. I thought our Fated bond would finally be sealed. But when the heavy doors swung open, the warmth I expected was gone. Arthur walked in clutching another woman, Diana. He looked at me like I was a stain on the rug. "The Moon Goddess played a trick," he sneered, his eyes glazed with a chemical devotion. "My donor's blood chooses her. The blood bond overrides some archaic fate." He didn't just reject me; he made me a servant in my own home. When Diana framed me for breaking a ring, Arthur didn't hesitate. He ordered the Silver Whip. "Arthur, please! I'm pregnant!" I screamed, shielding my stomach. "Stop lying to save your skin," he spat. He lashed me ten times with wolfsbane-dipped leather. I lay in the snow, feeling the warm blood of my miscarriage soak the ground, while he walked away to comfort his mistress. He killed his own son for a lie. That night, I signed my rejection in blood and vanished into the darkness. Five months later, I returned. Not as a weak Omega, but as the legendary White Wolf, holding the hand of the most powerful Alpha in the region. Arthur fell to his knees in the mud when he saw me, weeping. "I'll do anything. I'll give up the title." I looked down at him coldly and handed him the whip. "Ten lashes," I whispered. "For the baby you killed."

The familiar scent of pine and earth greeted me as I approached the Moonstone Pack house, my heart hammering against my ribs with nervous excitement. Tonight was supposed to be our night—Jordan's and mine. After seven years of waiting, of being his chosen mate in the shadows, he had finally promised to make it official. I clutched the garment bag closer to my chest, feeling the silk of the dress my grandmother and I had spent weeks selecting. It was midnight blue, the color of the moon at its darkest phase, with delicate silver embroidery that caught the light like stars. Grandmother had insisted on adding the family pendant to complete the look—a small silver wolf that had been passed down through generations of Patterson women. "Tonight, you'll finally get the recognition you deserve," I whispered to myself, repeating Grandmother's encouraging words from earlier. But as I rounded the corner toward the main entrance, my steps faltered. The entire pack house was ablaze with lights, decorated with white roses and silver ribbons that caught the evening breeze. My breath caught in my throat.
