Chapter 1

The bond shattered at exactly 10:47 p.m. on the night of my mother's memorial howl.

I felt it happen before I understood what I was seeing. A cold emptiness spread through my chest where warmth used to live, like someone had carved out my heart and left the cavity open to winter air. My knees buckled. I caught myself on the doorframe of the Ironveil pack house, my fingers digging into wood that suddenly felt too solid, too real.

Jace stood on the ceremonial platform with his teeth buried in Kehlani's neck.

The entire pack surrounded them, cheering. Torches blazed along every wall. Music pounded through speakers I'd helped install last month for what I thought would be a different celebration. Kehlani's head tilted back, her eyes half-closed, a small smile playing at the corner of her mouth. Jace's hand gripped her waist—possessive, claiming. When he finally lifted his head, blood glistened on his lips.

"I present to you," his voice boomed across the hall, "Kehlani Smith. My true mate. Your new Luna."

The crowd erupted. Wolves howled. Someone popped champagne. The sound felt distant, muffled, like I was underwater.

Kehlani's eyes found mine through the crowd. She smiled wider.

I had spent the entire day at my mother's memorial site. Alone. Arranging white lilies she'd loved. Lighting the ceremonial pyre with hands that shook because this was the third year without her and it never got easier. I'd waited for Jace under the rising moon, watching the flames burn down to embers, telling myself he was just running late. That he wouldn't forget. Not tonight. Not this.

But he had been here. Marking another woman. On the one night I'd asked him to stand beside me.

I pushed through the crowd. Bodies parted. Wolves I'd cooked for, organized ceremonies for, smiled at during three years of trying to be enough—they all stepped back and watched me approach the platform.

"Jace." My voice came out steadier than I expected.

He turned. His expression shifted from triumph to something colder. Bored, almost. Like I was an interruption to his celebration rather than the woman who'd spent three years as his Luna.

"Briar." He said my name like it tasted bad. "You should go."

"You promised." The words felt small leaving my mouth. "Tonight. You promised you'd be there."

"Plans changed." He wiped the blood from his lips with the back of his hand. Kehlani leaned into his side, her hand resting on his chest. The fresh mark on her neck gleamed wet and red. "I found my true mate. You understand."

Something in my chest cracked wider. "Three years, Jace. I've been your Luna for three years."

"You were never my Luna." His voice dropped, cold and final. "You were a placeholder. And now you're done."

The pack had gone quiet. Every wolf watched. Waited.

Jace stepped to the edge of the platform, looking down at me. His alpha aura pressed outward—a weight designed to make me submit, to drop my eyes, to bare my neck. I felt my wolf stir for the first time in months, a flicker of something that wasn't quite awake but wasn't entirely silent either.

"I, Jace Evans, Alpha of Ironveil," he spoke the words clearly, formally, "reject you, Briar Carter, as my mate and Luna."

The bond tore.

It felt like silver burning through my veins. Like every nerve in my body caught fire at once. My knees hit the floor. I bit down on my lip hard enough to taste copper, swallowing the scream that tried to claw its way out of my throat. The mark on my neck—the one I thought meant forever—went ice cold, then numb, then empty. A door slamming shut in an abandoned room.

Kehlani's smile never wavered. Her fingers traced idle patterns on Jace's arm.

I forced myself to breathe. In. Out. In. The pain didn't stop, but I made myself stand anyway. My legs shook. Blood dripped from where I'd bitten through my lip. Every wolf in the room stared at me—some with pity, some with relief, some with nothing at all.

I didn't say a word.

I turned and walked toward the doors. Each step felt like moving through deep water, my body fighting the severed bond's agony with every movement. But I kept walking. No one stopped me. The music started up again before I even reached the exit.

Outside, the night air hit my face like a slap. The memorial pyre was probably still smoking on the other side of the territory. My mother's favorite lilies turning to ash while her daughter got discarded like trash.

I made it back to the quarters I'd shared with Jace—the rooms I'd decorated, cleaned, filled with small touches I thought made it home. Now they felt like a stage set. Props in someone else's play.

I started packing mechanically. Clothes. Toiletries. The few things that were mine and mine alone. My hands wouldn't stop shaking. The phantom ache of the bond pulsed with every heartbeat, a wound that wouldn't close.

Then I remembered the key.

I'd found it six months ago, tucked behind a loose stone in the garden. It had Jace's scent on it, faint but unmistakable. I'd kept it hidden, told myself I'd never use it, that trust meant not needing to look.

I pulled it from my jewelry box now.

Jace's study had always been locked. Off-limits. "Alpha business," he'd said whenever I asked. I'd accepted that. Accepted so many things.

The key turned smoothly in the lock.

Inside, the study looked normal at first. Desk. Bookshelf. Filing cabinets. But something felt wrong. The bookshelf sat slightly crooked, a gap visible along one edge. I pressed against it. It swung inward.

Behind it, built into the wall, was a hidden compartment.

Rows of small glass vials lined the shelves. Empty. Each one labeled with a date. I picked up the nearest one. The label read three years ago—the week after our mating ceremony. The residue inside had a purple tint I recognized immediately.

Wolfsbane.

My hands went numb. I grabbed another vial. Another date. Another dose. Dozens of them, spanning three years, each meticulously documented. A leather ledger sat on the bottom shelf. I opened it with shaking fingers.

Jace's handwriting filled every page. Dosage schedules. Delivery methods. Notes on my behavior. "Subject compliant." "Wolf fully suppressed." "Senses negligible." The entries tracked my life like a lab experiment.

The final entry, dated two weeks ago, made my vision blur:

*"Wolf fully suppressed. Senses negligible. Ready for extraction of territory rights."*

My wolf—the one I'd thought was broken, defective, proof I was too weak to be a real Luna—had been caged. Drugged. Deliberately suppressed for three years while Jace played mate and planned to steal my family's ancestral lands.

I pulled out my phone with shaking hands and photographed every page. Every vial. Every piece of evidence. Then I grabbed three empty vials and sealed them in my mother's old leather satchel.

The bond in my chest still screamed. But underneath it, deeper, something else stirred. Something that had been sleeping too long.

My wolf wasn't broken.

She was furious.

I left Ironveil territory before dawn, the satchel heavy against my hip and my mother's memorial site cold behind me. I didn't look back.

But the moment his ex-girlfriend, Dalia, returned, the illusion shattered. Kason demanded I return the jade pendant—the one he had hand-carved for my sixteenth birthday—just so he could hang it around Dalia's neck. To him, I was suddenly nothing more than a placeholder who had kept his bed warm. The cruelty didn't stop there. He stood by and watched as Dalia shredded my clothes with scissors, laughing at my tears. When I collapsed on the floor in agony from acute appendicitis, Kason didn't call an ambulance. Instead, he dragged me to a shady clinic, accusing me of faking a pregnancy to trap him. He ordered the doctor to "terminate it" while I was dying of sepsis on the table. He called me trash. He called me property. He stripped away every ounce of dignity I had left, all to please a woman who was lying to his face. I realized then that the hero who saved me when I was ten was dead. I was done begging for scraps of affection from a monster. Trembling, I walked to the phone and dialed the number of the one man Kason feared most—his sworn enemy, Hadley Payne. "Tell him yes," I whispered into the receiver. "I accept the arrangement. I will marry him." Kason thought he could break me. Instead, he was about to watch his "property" become the Queen of the rival family.
