Chapter 1
The whole town of Belmor was buzzing about it: Gabriel Thorne lived for me, Lydia Hartwell.
Back in preschool, he'd taken a pencil jab for me. As teenagers, he climbed trees to shoo away the cicadas that were ruining my naps. When we grew up, all I had to do was sigh, "Spring's so nice," and he'd go out and buy properties in a dozen spring-soaked cities across the globe, just so he could whisk me off for a romantic getaway whenever I wanted.
Except for that stretch when Gabriel lost his memory, he'd given me his whole heart, his entire life.
Even after we formed our sacred bond, when I was diagnosed with ALS, and the whole town urged him to break the bond, he just stayed quiet. He'd carry me, my body numb and useless, on his back, climbing every mountain temple etched with ancient stones. He'd guide my hand to trace the word "life" carved into those slabs, praying I'd hold on.
But that brutal winter, when the healers declared me gone, he sat with my body all night, his forehead pressed against my cheek, whispering, "Lydia, I've done my duty to you in this life. If there's another, I hope you'll let me be with her."
They say hearing's the last thing to go when you die.
That's when I learned the truth. The wolf everyone thought was devoted to me had split his heart in two the moment his memories came back. Half for his duty to me. The other half for Serena Brightwell-the she-wolf who found him when he was lost, the one who chose to end her life when he remembered who he was.
Maybe Gabriel's prayers moved the heavens, because when I opened my eyes again, I was right back where it all started. My assistant's panicked voice hit my ears: "Gabriel's lost his memory again. He won't come back with us."
"We've reached out to the top neural healer," she went on. "They can restore his memory soon."
The exact same words I'd heard in my last life, when I found Gabriel after he went missing.
But this time, there was no rush of joy, no frantic need to save him. I rubbed my throbbing temples and shook my head. "No healers yet."
Then I did two things.
First, I went to the hospital for a full-body checkup, down to the last detail.
Second, I took those results to Gabriel's parents and asked to break our binding.
They were stunned, jaws practically on the floor. I laid it out calmly, like I was discussing the weather. "Gabriel doesn't remember me or our bond. He's a blank slate. If he gets his memory back, he'll be stuck with me-a she-wolf with a disease no healer can fix. Better to let him stay as he is, free to form a sacred bond with someone he actually wants. I won't drag him down again."
I meant every word.
In my last life, I believed we were in love. Even when ALS hit, I never thought of becoming unbound. I thought true love could conquer anything. But the truth at the end? It ripped me open. Gabriel didn't love me. His heart belonged to someone else.
Agnes, Gabriel's mom, grabbed my hand, shaking her head, her eyes red and teary. "Lydia, sweetheart, how could you think you're a burden? If Gabriel knew you were sick, he'd only blame himself for not taking better care of you. He adores you. Why would he ever want to bond with anyone else?"
I didn't say a word. I just pulled out my phone and played the video my assistant had sent me.
The screen showed the massive glass wall of an aquarium. A she-wolf in a shimmering pink mermaid tail flipped through the water, sunlight streaming through, painting her in fractured gold. Outside the glass, Gabriel stood, his eyes soft and mesmerized in a way I'd never seen. The she-wolf in the water caught his gaze and gave a playful wink. His eyes melted, like a frozen stream in spring, so full of tenderness it could drown you.
The whole world's spring seemed to live in those eyes, but they only reflected that pink-tailed she-wolf.
The video ended, and the room went dead silent.
I looked at Gabriel's parents, their faces frozen, and said, "This is the best choice for me and Gabriel."
After a long pause, Henry, Gabriel's dad, dragged a hand across his face, his voice rough. "What's your plan now, Lydia?"
I lowered my eyes, hiding the storm inside. "When my brother went abroad to expand the family business, I stayed because of the bond. I've leaned on you and Agnes too long. He knows about my condition now and's already applying for a permanent visa for me other packs. Once it's approved, I'm leaving. They've got the best healing teams there. Maybe I'll get a few more years."

I was an Omega married off to the powerful Gamma Ryker Blackwood to save my dwindling pack.
But on our wedding night, he threw me into the spare room, declaring our bond a mere political alliance.
He refused to mark me, leaving me to suffer through my agonizing heats with nothing but toxic suppressants.
I soon discovered his heart belonged to a powerful Alpha warrior named Jessa.
They openly humiliated me at pack events, mocking my unmarked status and telling me to initiate a rejection.
When I finally found the courage to leave, his mother threatened my family's survival if I didn't produce an heir.
That night, a drunken Ryker came home and used the forbidden Alpha Command on me.
"Kneel."
My knees crashed onto the cold marble floor, the dark magic breaking my will and tearing our sacred bond apart.
I was trapped in a gilded cage, abused by my fated mate, and forced to bear his cruelty for the sake of my people.
How could the Moon Goddess shackle me to a monster who would profane our bond just to show his dominance?
The next morning, a terrified Ryker woke up realizing he could be ruined by the council for using the Command.
I didn't scream or report him to the Alpha King.
Instead, I wiped away my tears, gave him a gentle smile, and pretended to forgive him.
He gave me a crumb of remorse, and I will use it to bake a loaf of revenge.
