Chapter 4

Three weeks in the dark changes a body in ways I catalogued with the same clinical precision I'd once used on wounded warriors. Muscle atrophy from limited movement and silver proximity—I could feel it in the way my legs shook when I stood, the way my arms couldn't hold my own weight anymore. My skin had gone translucent. I could see the veins in my wrists, blue and fragile-looking. My pulse was irregular. I counted it sometimes, pressing two fingers to my throat, feeling the rhythm stutter and skip.

But something else was changing too.

The wolfsbane rationing—drinking half what they gave me, filtering the rest through silk that was now more purple than blue—had produced a shift. Small. Fractional. But undeniable.

My wolf was waking up.

It happened in the dead of night, during the hours when the pack house above went quiet and the guard's footsteps stopped coming. A warmth would bloom behind my ribs, silver-bright and alive, pressing against the inside of my chest like hands against glass. She couldn't break through. Couldn't shift. Couldn't reach the pack mind-link. But she was there. Present. Furious.

The first time it happened, I cried. The second time, I started talking.

"His name is Vance Patterson," I said aloud, my voice echoing off stone. "Alpha of Ironveil. The man who marked you seven years ago. The man who murdered our father with wolfsbane over eight months and made it look like wolf-sickness."

The warmth pulsed. Listening.

"The woman who visited us—Heidi Black. Gamma's daughter. She's Luna now. She knows about the murder. She's complicit."

I kept going. Names. Faces. The layout of the den—ten by twelve, silver-reinforced door, water trough in the northeast corner. The guard rotation. Three descents a day, slight drag on the left foot, hesitates before withdrawing the food tray.

I wasn't comforting my wolf. I was briefing her. She'd been locked out of critical intelligence for three weeks. She needed to be caught up. Because when she finally broke through—and she would, I could feel it building—she needed to know exactly what we were walking into.

The warmth stayed longer each night. Two minutes. Then three. Last night, almost five.

We were running out of time. But we were also running out of poison.

Above me, something changed on the third week's fifth day.

New voices. Formal cadences. The particular quality of speech that comes from wolves who are used to being obeyed without question. I pressed my ear to the door and listened.

Lycan inspection team.

My heart rate kicked up. I forced it steady. Lycan Council inspections were routine—every Alpha territory got one annually. But the timing—

I closed my eyes and counted. If Vance had been planning this rejection for five years, he'd have scheduled the Renewal Ceremony deliberately. Far enough from the last inspection that no one would think to question pack stability. Close enough to the next one that—

No. He wouldn't have risked it. He'd have confirmed the inspection date before setting the Renewal. Which meant this visit was either early, or—

Footsteps crossed the alliance hall above. Multiple sets. A guided tour. I recognized the rhythm. I'd given dozens of them myself when hosting visiting Alphas. Show the training grounds first. Then the alliance hall. The healer's cabin if they ask. Avoid the private quarters. Keep it efficient and polished.

Vance's voice filtered through the stone, muffled but unmistakable. Smooth. Confident. Playing the gracious host.

I sat back against the wall. My wolf stirred, restless.

"Lycan inspection," I told her quietly. "Council authority. They outrank Alphas. If we could reach them—"

But we couldn't. My wolf couldn't break through long enough to mind-link. And even if she could, the wolfsbane suppression meant the signal would be weak. Fragmented. Easy to dismiss as interference or rogue noise.

We needed proximity. We needed someone close enough to catch our scent.

We needed a miracle.

The inspection continued through the next day. I tracked it by sound. Footsteps in the training yard. Voices in the western wing. A brief pause near what I thought was the healer's cabin—someone asking questions, Vance's Beta answering.

Then, late afternoon, the footsteps changed direction.

They were coming toward the eastern wing. Toward this section of the pack house. The section Vance had clearly left undisturbed—no maintenance, no pack members assigned here. I'd noticed it during my years as Luna, filed it away as odd but not urgent.

Now I understood. He'd been preparing.

The footsteps stopped. Directly above me. Maybe fifteen feet of stone and earth between us, but directly above.

Two sets. One heavier, measured. One lighter, quicker. A pause. Then—

Nothing.

Just silence.

I held my breath. My wolf surged against my ribs, harder than she'd ever pushed before. The heat was sudden and sharp, almost painful. She was trying to break through. Trying to send something—scent, signal, anything—up through the stone.

I pressed my hand flat against the floor. Focused everything I had into that single point of contact.

Please.

The silence stretched. Ten seconds. Twenty.

Then I heard it. A voice. Male. Low. Absolutely calm.

"Clear this area."

Not a question. Not a suggestion. A command that carried the weight of someone who had never needed to repeat himself.

My wolf went still. Listening.

Above me, footsteps retreated. Fast. Efficient. The kind of movement that comes from people who know exactly what that tone means.

Then—nothing.

Just one set of footsteps remaining. Standing exactly where they'd stopped.

I closed my eyes. My pulse hammered against my throat. My wolf pressed so hard against my ribs I thought she might crack through bone.

The footsteps didn't move.

Whoever was standing up there—they'd caught something. A scent. A trace. Something wrong enough to stop a Lycan Prince mid-inspection and clear the area without explanation.

I opened my eyes in the dark and smiled.

Found you.
