Chapter 5

The footsteps above me didn't move.

Whoever was standing up there had stopped directly overhead. Not passing through. Not inspecting. Just—standing. The silence stretched so long I started counting my own heartbeats to stay anchored. Thirty. Forty. Fifty.

Then I heard it. A second set of footsteps. Heavier. Faster. Coming from the direction of the alliance hall.

Vance.

I pressed my ear harder against the door. My wolf surged again, that silver-bright heat flooding my chest. She was trying to push something through the stone. Scent. Signal. Anything.

"Barrett." Vance's voice filtered through, smooth and warm. "I didn't realize you'd wandered this far east. This section isn't part of the standard tour—mostly storage, unused quarters. Nothing worth your time."

A pause. Then a voice I didn't recognize. Male. Low. Absolutely calm.

"What's underneath this section of the pack house?"

The question landed like a stone in still water. No preamble. No politeness. Just a direct demand wrapped in the kind of tone that didn't expect to be deflected.

Vance's response came quickly. Too quickly. "Ah. You've got sharp instincts. There is a lower level here—old storage from when we first built Ironveil. August Wright had it constructed as a emergency shelter during the territory wars. We don't use it much anymore."

"Open it."

Another pause. Longer this time. I could almost see Vance recalibrating. When he spoke again, his voice had shifted—warmer, more personal. The register he used when he wanted someone to feel like they were being brought into confidence.

"Of course. Though I should mention—we do have a situation down there currently. Internal pack matter. A wolf whose inner wolf went feral about three weeks ago. We've been managing it under pack law, keeping her contained until we can determine if she's recoverable. It's—well, it's not pleasant. I wouldn't want to subject you to—"

"Open it."

The same two words. Same tone. Like Vance hadn't spoken at all.

I heard movement above. Vance's footsteps shifting. Then his hand on someone's shoulder—I knew that sound, the soft thump of palm on fabric, the particular weight of it. He used that gesture when he wanted to create intimacy. Make someone feel chosen.

"Barrett, I appreciate your thoroughness, truly. But under pack law, internal discipline matters are outside Lycan inspection jurisdiction unless there's evidence of—"

The hand was removed.

I didn't hear it happen. I just heard the absence—the sudden space where contact had been, and then Vance's voice again, slightly less smooth.

"Of course. I'll have my Beta bring the key."

"No." That calm voice again. "You'll open it now. Or I will."

Silence.

Then Vance's footsteps. Moving toward the entrance to the den. I pushed myself upright, my back against the wall, my legs shaking with the effort. My wolf was pressing so hard against my ribs I thought she might crack through bone.

The lock disengaged. The heavy scrape of metal on metal. The door began to open.

Light flooded in. Real light, not torchlight. Afternoon sun filtering down the stairwell. I turned my face away, my eyes burning.

Footsteps on the stairs. Fast. Controlled. Then a voice, much closer now, with an edge I hadn't heard before.

"Moon Goddess."

I forced my eyes open. Squinted through the brightness. A man stood in the doorway. Tall. Dark-haired. Dressed in the formal black that marked Lycan Council authority. He wasn't looking at Vance. He was looking at me.

Then he was moving. Across the den in three strides, dropping to his knees beside me. His hands reached for my wrist—checking my pulse, I realized distantly. The touch was careful. Professional.

And the moment his skin made contact with mine, everything changed.

Heat exploded through my chest. Not the slow warmth of my wolf stirring. This was sudden. Violent. Silver-bright and burning. My bones began to crack. Not breaking—shifting. Restructuring. My wolf wasn't pressing against my ribs anymore. She was tearing through them.

I tried to pull away. Couldn't. My body was convulsing, my spine arching, my hands clawing at the stone floor. The man didn't let go. His grip on my wrist tightened. Steady. Anchoring.

"Let it happen," he said quietly. "Don't fight it."

My vision went white. My bones were splitting. My skin was burning. And underneath it all, rising like a tide I couldn't stop—

My wolf. Awake. Furious. Silver-furred and massive and absolutely done being silent.

She tore through.

I woke up to the suffocating smell of copper and sulfur, my fingers wrapped around a blood-soaked leather whip. Hanging from an obsidian cross in front of me was a boy with silver hair and dead, golden eyes. His pale chest was torn open to the bone. I recognized those eyes immediately. I had spent three years describing them on my laptop. He was Kamari Monroe, the tragic, overpowered protagonist of my own web novel. And I wasn't just a bystander. I was Benedict Guerrero, the sadistic academy headmaster. The ultimate villain. A reel of images flashed in my mind: my original ending. Kamari, fully awakened, skinning me alive and burning my soul in a furnace for forty-nine days. My loyal attack dog, Gideon, stepped forward with a basin of glowing green liquid. "Headmaster, let me wake him up with this bone-rot acid so you can resume." If that acid hit Kamari, his hatred would become permanent. My gruesome death would be sealed. But if I broke character and apologized, the magical world would sense the shift, and Kamari would just think it was a sicker, more twisted trap. How was I supposed to survive a death sentence I wrote myself? I couldn't show weakness. I had to play the monster to survive. Suppressing my terror, I smashed the acid basin, healed his ruined flesh with agonizing dark magic, and lied straight to his face. "Someone had to be the monster to push you into the fire."
