My Mate Kept Me Weak to Protect His Mistress Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, three days before what should have been my wedding anniversary.

I knelt at the ritual altar with James's hand resting on my shoulder—heavy, possessive, exactly where it had been for ten years. The full moon hung overhead, pale against the morning sky. Every wolf in Ironvale Pack stood in ceremonial silence behind us, waiting for the Moon Goddess to seal what we'd already lived: me as Luna, James as Alpha, our bond permanent and unbreakable.

The blessing descended. I felt it first as warmth spreading through my chest, then as light gathering at the base of my throat where James's mark sat. For one perfect second, I thought it was working.

Then the warmth turned to ice.

The mark on my neck cracked. Not metaphorically. I felt it fracture like glass under pressure, each splinter a line of fire splitting outward from the center. The pain was so immediate and total that I couldn't breathe around it. My knees hit the stone altar. A sound tore out of me—half gasp, half scream—before I could stop it.

The altar light extinguished.

Behind me, the pack gasped. Whispers rippled through the ceremonial formation. I pressed my hand to my neck, feeling the mark beneath my fingers—still there, but wrong. Hollow. Like touching a door that used to lead somewhere and now opened onto nothing.

I looked up at James.

He wasn't surprised.

That was the thing that cut through the pain, sharp and cold: his face held recognition, not shock. His jaw was tight. His eyes were calculating. He had known this would happen.

"James?" My voice came out broken.

His hand tightened on my shoulder. "Get up," he said quietly. "We'll discuss this inside."

"The Luna Accord failed." That was Elder Osmund, his voice carrying across the courtyard. "The Moon Goddess has refused the bond."

More whispers. I felt every eye on me—on us—and the weight of their stares made my skin crawl. James's fingers dug into my shoulder hard enough to bruise. "Inside," he repeated. "Now."

I let him pull me to my feet. My legs shook. The pain in my neck had settled into a deep, throbbing ache that pulsed with every heartbeat. I followed him across the courtyard, through the pack house doors, up the stairs to his quarters. The same route I'd walked a thousand times. It had never felt this long.

He shut the door behind us. Locked it.

I turned to face him. "What just happened?"

"The Accord failed because the bond isn't real." He said it like he was reporting weather. Flat. Matter-of-fact. "The Moon Goddess can't seal a fraudulent claim."

The words took a moment to land. When they did, I felt the ground tilt. "What?"

"Lina Jenkins is my first mate. I marked her years before I met you."

Lina. The widow who lived in the east wing. The woman I'd comforted after her supposed husband's death, who I'd welcomed into our home, who had been here the entire time.

"Ten years," I whispered. "I've been your Luna for ten years."

"You've been useful for ten years," James corrected. He moved to the window, his back to me. "Your aura kept this pack strong. Our borders unbreachable. Our warriors faster. I needed that. I still need it."

My wolf stirred. For the first time in my life, I felt her—not words, but a low, furious vibration deep in my chest.

"You lied to me."

"I made a strategic choice." He turned back, and his Alpha tone bled into his voice—that frequency that made every wolf in range want to obey. "And you're going to accept the arrangement. Lina is my true mate. You remain my public Luna. Nothing changes."

The command pressed against my ribs. I felt it trying to sink into my bones, to make me nod, to make me agree. But underneath it, my wolf was growling. The sound built in my chest like pressure behind a dam.

"You should be grateful," James continued. His eyes were cold. "A she-wolf whose wolf never awakened? You're functionally an Omega. You're nothing outside this pack."

The dam broke.

I didn't plan what happened next. My body moved before my mind caught up. I walked to his desk, opened the locked drawer—I'd had the key for years—and pulled out the sealed file I'd seen the healer hide there months ago. The one marked with my name.

James went very still. "Put that back."

I broke the seal. Inside: bloodwork results. Dates going back a decade. Wolfsbane traces. Suppressed markers. A note in the healer's handwriting: *Per Alpha's orders, do not disclose.*

My hands shook as I read. He'd been poisoning me. Keeping my wolf dormant. Keeping me weak.

I looked up at him. "You did this."

"I did what was necessary." No remorse. No apology. "And you'll do what's necessary now. Accept the arrangement, or I'll have you removed as a rogue."

My wolf howled. It was the first sound she'd ever made—raw and furious and mine.

I pressed the file against my chest. "No."

James's expression darkened. "What did you say?"

"I said no." My voice was steady. Strange, how steady it was. "I'm done."

I walked out of his quarters. Down the stairs. Through the pack house. He didn't follow—he thought I had nowhere to go, nothing to leverage, no way to leave.

He was wrong.

I found the healer in her office. She looked up when I entered, and her face went pale.

"I need your help," I said. "And I need the rest of the files you've been hiding."

She stared at me for a long moment. Then, slowly, she nodded.

By dawn, I had everything. By morning assembly, I was ready.

I walked into the courtyard during the morning run. The entire pack was there—warriors in formation, Omegas by the kitchens, Margot Voss near the front. James stood at the top of the steps, his usual position. He saw me and frowned.

I didn't wait for him to speak.

"I, Penelope Rose," I said, loud enough to carry, "reject you, James, Alpha of Ironvale, as my mate."

The bond snapped.

I felt it tear loose—every thread that had connected us for ten years ripping free all at once. The pain was enormous. Total. My knees buckled. I hit the courtyard stones hard, the files still clutched against my chest.

Through the white-hot agony, I saw James's mark go hollow and gray on his neck. Saw his knees buckle for half a second before he caught himself.

And I heard her. My wolf. Howling inside me for the first time.

The last thing I saw before my vision went dark was the healer running toward me, and James—standing at the top of the steps, frozen, his hand pressed to his neck where the mark used to mean something.
