Chapter 5

I came back to consciousness in pieces.

First the smell — antiseptic, clean linen, something herbal and medicinal that meant Healer. Then the light — soft, pale, the kind that doesn't demand anything from your eyes. Then the ceiling, white and still, and the understanding that I was lying down somewhere that wasn't my chambers.

Then the rest of it came back.

I didn't move. Didn't make a sound. I just lay there and let the memory settle over me like water filling a room — Eiden's eyes, the impact, the floor rushing up, the blood. The bond going cold.

The pup, still.

I pressed my hand flat against my abdomen. The old habit. The morning ritual I'd never been able to break.

Nothing moved beneath my palm.

I kept my hand there anyway.

Healer Idris worked in silence on the far side of the room, her back to me, writing in a documentation ledger with the focused precision of someone who had learned long ago to process horror through procedure. I watched her for a moment. Her shoulders were set in a particular way — not tense exactly, but contained, like she was holding something in that she had not yet decided what to do with.

My father was sitting beside my bed.

He wasn't touching me. His hand rested on the mattress near mine — close, available, not imposing. His eyes were on my face, and when they met mine, he didn't say anything. He didn't flinch. He just looked at me with that steady, absolute presence that had been the fixed point of my entire life, and I understood from it everything I needed to understand.

He had come. He had carried me out himself. He had brought me here.

Weston had not come.

I looked back at the ceiling.

My wolf was gone. Not dead — I could feel the faint, distant ember of her somewhere deep inside me, retreated to a place so dark and quiet I could barely sense her warmth. After ten losses, I knew what her grief felt like. This was different. This wasn't grief.

This was a wolf that had finally, completely, run out of reasons to endure.

Idris set down her pen. She picked up the ledger, tucked it under her arm, and crossed toward the door without looking at either of us. Just before she reached it, she paused.

"I'll need thirty minutes to complete the formal documentation," she said, her voice even and professional. "After that, I'll want to speak with you, Luna. There are findings that will need to be on record."

She said *Luna* like she meant it. Like it was still true.

I nodded once. She left.

The room was very quiet after that. Somewhere down the corridor, I could hear the distant sounds of the Silvercrest ward — footsteps, a door, the low murmur of voices. A different pack. A different Alpha's territory. A place where no one had chosen to let me bleed.

My father's hand moved. Not much. Just enough to rest against mine.

He didn't speak. He didn't try to explain, or comfort, or fill the silence with anything. He just stayed — solid and present and entirely without expectation — the way he had always stayed when I was small and the world had been too large.

I stared at the ceiling until I could trust my voice.

"Five minutes," I said.

His hand pressed gently against mine. "Take them."

So I did. I took five minutes and I lay in the quiet of the Silvercrest ward and I let myself feel it — all of it, everything I had been too careful to feel for weeks. The grief of the pup. The cold of the bond. The specific, devastating cruelty of screaming through the mate link and feeling it slam shut in my face.

I did not cry. My eyes stayed dry and my breathing stayed even and somewhere underneath all of it, beneath the grief and the rage and the hollow place where my wolf used to be warm, something else was forming. Something quiet and hard and absolutely without mercy.

Clarity.

When the five minutes were done, I turned my head toward my father.

"I need everything Giuliana has," I said. "Tonight, if possible."

He looked at me for a long moment. Something moved across his face — not relief exactly, but something close to it. Recognition, maybe. The particular expression of a man who had been waiting for his daughter to become what she had always been.

"I'll reach her now," he said.

He stepped out into the corridor. I heard his footsteps pause just outside the door — and then another sound. Quieter. Uncertain.

Marcus's voice, barely coherent: *"I felt it through the pack link. I knew. The Alpha tone, he—"*

A long silence. Then my father's voice, low and absolute.

"When the time comes to choose which side of history you stand on," he said, "you will only be offered one opportunity to choose correctly."

More silence. Then the sound of footsteps retreating — Marcus, heading back toward Ironridge.

I turned my eyes back to the ceiling. My hand was still pressed flat against my abdomen.

The ember of my wolf flickered, somewhere in the dark.

Not gone. Just waiting.
