Chapter 1

At 8:14 on a Tuesday morning, the extraction needle drove three inches into my pelvic bone.

It was my fourth "routine marrow maintenance" this year. The pack healer had my wrists strapped to the steel table, humming quietly while clear plastic tubes filled with thick, dark red fluid.

Then my wolf, silent for three months under heavy suppressants, snapped awake inside my skull.

*Stop,* she screamed, her voice jagged and frantic. *He is draining us dry!*

I didn't think. I ripped my left arm free from the leather buckle and yanked the four-gauge bore needle out of my flesh. Blood hit the floor, dark and heavy.

The healer gasped, dropping a stainless steel tray. In his panic, he stumbled toward a small refrigerated case built into the far wall. The magnetic seal broke with a hiss.

For half a second, before the door swung shut, I saw it.

Three pediatric IV bags hung on the top rack. Each one was printed with my biological sequence, my rare blood-antigen stamp, and a handwritten label: *Subject: Male pup. Recipient: Safe House 4.*

A pup. Walker had told me my marrow was being frozen for border warriors.

My throat went dry. I pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist, feeling my own racing pulse. I didn't yell. I didn't ask questions. I watched the angle of his fingers on the keypad as he locked the cabinet.

Four. Nine. One. Seven.

"Luna, your blood pressure dropped," the healer stammered, wiping his hands on a towel. "We need to bandage that."

"I pulled too hard," I said, my voice level. "I'll clean it myself."

I left the clinic with blood soaking through my sleeve.

At two in the morning, the pack house clinic was deserted.

I slipped through the side door, punch-coded the lock—four, nine, one, seven—and pulled open the refrigerated unit.

Inside sat six vials of raw, unrefined wolfsbane at five times the clinical limit. Beneath them lay the child-sized blood bags, tagged with my name, and a courier log recording bi-weekly deliveries across the northern boundary line.

I took out a small digital camera I had checked out from the training archives that afternoon. I photographed every label, every date, and every signature.

At dawn, I met the pack healer by the supply shed behind the kennels.

I threw three glossy prints onto the gravel by his boots.

He looked down, his face instantly losing all color. "Emily... please. You don't understand the Alpha's position."

"Who is the boy?" I asked.

He swallowed hard. "Samantha Carlson's child. Born four years ago. His immune system is collapsing. Walker believes the pup is his son. Your marrow is the only thing keeping him alive."

Samantha Carlson. The rogue-born she-wolf Walker claimed to have cast out before our mating ceremony.

I pocketed the camera. "You will repeat that to the elders, or I will hand these directly to the Lycan border council."

I turned on my heel and walked straight into the Alpha's wing.

Walker was sitting behind his mahogany desk when I pushed the door open.

I dropped the empty wolfsbane vials and two blood-bag labels across his blotter. Glass rattled against wood.

Walker didn't flinch. He leaned back in his leather chair and held my eyes for a fraction of a second too long—the exact tell he had whenever he was backed into a corner.

"He's dying, Emily," Walker said, his voice flat. "Your marrow stabilizes his lungs. Luna duty is sacrifice. You will finish the protocol."

He let his Alpha aura bleed out—a heavy, suffocating pressure that dropped the room's temperature and pressed against my ribcage.

Inside me, my wolf bared her teeth. She shoved upward against the command, refusing to drop her head.

"I am filing for an elder tribunal by noon," I said.

Walker's eyes narrowed, his tone dropping into a hard, threatening rasp. *"Speak a single word of this to the elders, and you will regret it."*

I didn't answer him. I didn't need to. The photos and the courier ledger were already encrypted and loaded into the pack archive's automated dispatch server, set on a delayed broadcast timer.

By noon, I was in the basement linen corridor, out of range of the pack mind-link.

I had cornered Leah, the junior nurse who had attended my first pregnancy three years ago—the one that ended on the grand marble staircase during the solstice gala.

"The stairs," I said, holding her gaze. "Who pushed me, Leah?"

The girl started to shake, clutching a stack of sheets to her chest. "Alpha Walker ordered the charts sealed. He said anyone who talked would be thrown into the rogue wastes."

"Who was on the landing behind me?"

"Samantha Carlson," Leah whispered. "She was staying in the west guest suite. Walker signed the security erase himself."

My wolf didn't snarl this time. She went totally, terrifyingly cold.

I recorded Leah's testimony on my phone and uploaded the audio file directly into the pending archive queue.

At four o'clock, the heavy oak doors of the great hall slammed open.

Walker marched in, his trench coat soaked from the rain. His Gamma flanked him, along with Beta Marcus Reid and three armed pack warriors. In Walker's fist was a shredded piece of wool.

"A rogue attack hit Safe House Four two hours ago," Walker roared, throwing the torn cloth onto the tile in front of me. "They breached the nursery. Samantha pulled the boy out by the skin of his teeth. This was on the fence wire."

The scent rolled off the fabric: sweet vanilla and lavender. My scent, mixed with old wolfsbane wash.

"It's planted," I said calmly, looking past him to Marcus. "Call the Lycan border checkpoint. Their infrared cameras log every crossing within five miles. Check the footage."

*"Enough!"* Walker's Alpha tone tore through the hall like an iron hammer.

The command hit my chest, snapping my teeth shut and freezing the breath in my throat. The sheer biological force locked my limbs.

Walker stepped forward, glaring down at me with cold fury. "You are stripped of all Luna privileges. No clinic access. No elder contact. Confine her to the east tower suite under guard."

He wheeled around, barking orders to Marcus.

I stood motionless between the two guards, my jaw still aching from his command.

Behind Walker's broad back, the brass wall clock read 4:18. The automated queue was ticking down. In exactly thirteen hours and forty-two minutes, the archive server would transmit the entire file to every pack elder in the territory.
