My Mate Forced Me to Watch My Father Die

Chapter 2

The great hall smelled like wet wool and gardenia smoke.

I stopped three steps inside the doorway and let them look at me. I knew what they were seeing. Not the Luna. Not the pale, gardenia-drenched ghost in white who drifted through their morning meetings with her eyes on the floor. Something else. A woman in plain black with raw shoulders and blood at the beading of her cuffs and no perfume at all.

Delta warriors along the walls went still. A young Omega near the kitchen door forgot to set down the tray she was holding. Marcus's head came up, slow, his nostrils flaring at something he could not quite place.

Elijah stood at the dais in yesterday's shirt with gardenia on his collar and Thea's small trembling ghost still clinging to him like a second skin. He turned. He saw me. His mouth opened.

"Madeline — "

"I, Madeline Walker," I said, "reject you, Elijah Stevens, Alpha of Nightveil Pack, as my mate and my Alpha."

The hall went underwater.

I heard my own voice from a great distance, steady in a way I did not remember choosing. I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. My pulse was very slow.

"I reject the mark you gave me. I reject the bond you forced. I reject every command you laid on this body while my father died in a room you refused to send help to."

Something cold spread down the side of my neck where his mark had been — a slow leaking chill, like ice water down the inside of skin. It kept going. It reached my collarbone. It hollowed out.

Elijah's hand shot out for the dais edge. His knuckles went white against the wood. The color drained from his face in one long pull, cheekbones to jaw, and the sound that came out of his chest was not a word. It was a howl, half-strangled, the kind of noise a wolf makes when something inside him tears.

"Madeline — stop — "

I did not stop.

"It is done," I said.

Then my knees hit the floor.

Not from grief. From pressure. Something under my ribs was rising — the suffocated hum I had felt against Elijah's command last night, the buried *no no no*, except it was not buried anymore. It was climbing. It was enormous. It was mine.

My spine cracked.

I heard it before I felt it — a sound like thunder in a closed room, sharp and wet and impossible. My hands hit the floorboards and the bones inside them lengthened all at once. Someone in the hall screamed. Someone else went to their knees. I could not tell if the noise coming out of my throat was human anymore.

And then she was there.

*Mine,* she said, and it was not a word. It was a feeling with a shape. *Mine. Ours. Finally.*

Her name arrived a second after she did. Seraphine. I knew it the way you know your own name in a dream.

The last of my human vision went silver at the edges and then I was standing on four legs in the middle of the great hall of Nightveil Pack, and I was taller than the dais. My fur was the color of a knife catching light. I could smell every person in that room — Marcus's confusion, sour and thick; a Delta's fear like cut copper; Elijah's gardenia and underneath it something rotten, something small.

And I could smell myself. For the first time in three years.

Lavender. Cold, clean lavender, and something under it that crackled — the smell of air just before lightning splits it. It filled the hall from wall to wall. I watched a Gamma near the door press her back against the wood and slide down it, her eyes wet.

Seraphine turned her head. I turned it with her. Our silver eyes went across the hall once — the Deltas, the Omegas, Marcus with his mouth open, Elijah with one hand still gripping the dais and the other pressed flat over the mark he had put on me, the mark that was no longer there.

He was crying.

I had never seen him cry.

*Go,* Seraphine said. *Not here. Not for them.*

I went.

I hit the great hall doors with my shoulder and they burst open into the snow, and I was running before the wood stopped shuddering behind me. The blizzard had passed in the night. The world outside was white and blinding and completely silent, and my paws — my paws — threw powder up in slow arcs as I crossed the courtyard and the treeline swallowed me whole.

Behind me, faint through the trees, I heard Elijah's voice crack into Alpha tone.

"Marcus. Assemble a tracking team. Now."

A pause. A hesitation. Marcus's voice, low and careful: "Alpha — that wasn't — "

"*Now,* Marcus."

"...Yes, Alpha."

Seraphine's ears flattened. A growl rolled through our chest, low and long, and the trees ahead of us seemed to lean out of the way.

*Let them come,* she said.

I ran.

Behind me, in the great hall, I could feel it even at a distance — the silence following Elijah back to the dais, the pack scattering under his Alpha tone but not the way they used to scatter, not the way they had yesterday. Something in that hall had changed shape. Something they had all just watched with their own eyes.

The silence would follow him now. It would not leave.

I ran until the pack house was gone behind me and there was only snow and pine and the cold clean smell of my own scent moving with me through the trees, and somewhere very deep and very new, Seraphine settled her weight against the inside of my ribs and stayed.
