Chapter 4

The training yard dirt was cold against my knees.

I felt it through the fabric of my dress, felt the small stones pressing into my shins, and thought distantly that I should care about the pain. But the silver shackles around my wrists were already smoking where they touched my skin, and that pain was louder. Sharper. The kind that made everything else seem like background noise.

The pack formed a ring around me. I recognized faces. Wolves I had served beside. Wolves whose children had played with Taytum. Wolves who had called me Luna three days ago and would not meet my eyes now.

Rachel paced the circle slowly, deliberately, her red dress catching the late afternoon light. In her hand was the wolfsbane brand, its tip still buried in the coals of the portable brazier one of the Deltas had dragged into the yard. The metal glowed dull orange. The air around it shimmered with heat.

I didn't look at her.

I looked up.

The pack house balcony overlooked the training yard from the east side. Zachary stood at the railing, both hands resting lightly on the stone ledge, his posture relaxed. He wore his Alpha formal wear—the dark jacket, the silver clasp at his collar that I had fastened for him a hundred times. His face was composed. Calm. He was watching.

I held his gaze.

Three seconds. Four. I waited for something. Anything. A flicker of the bond that had lived in my chest since the night he marked me. A word. A gesture. The smallest sign that the man I had devoted ten years to was still in there somewhere, beneath the silence.

The bond was cold.

Not dormant. Not quiet. Cold. Like something that had been alive once and wasn't anymore.

Zachary tilted his head slightly to the right. The movement was small, almost absent, the way he always looked when he was calculating instead of feeling. I had noticed it years ago and thought it was endearing. Now I understood what it meant.

He had already made his choice.

He looked away.

Rachel's voice cut through the yard. "You were never his mate."

I dropped my gaze. She was crouching in front of me now, close enough that I could see the fresh marking bite on her neck, close enough that only the nearest wolves would hear her next words.

"You were his tool," she said quietly. Her smile was small and precise. "And tools don't get to keep marks."

She lifted the brand from the coals.

The tip glowed white-hot now, the wolfsbane coating it releasing a thin curl of bitter smoke. Rachel held it steady, letting me see it, letting the moment stretch.

Then she pressed it against my neck.

Directly over Zachary's original mark.

The pain was total.

It wasn't heat. It wasn't burning. It was something deeper, something that went past skin and muscle and bone and found the part of me that had believed the mate bond was sacred. The wolfsbane in the brand reacted with the wolfsbane already in my blood—nine years of micro-doses, nine years of fog—and for one terrible moment my wolf went completely silent.

Not dormant. Not sleeping.

Gone.

Like the last door had been closed and locked and the key thrown away.

I screamed.

Once. Involuntary. The sound tore out of my throat before I could stop it, raw and animal and nothing like the voice I had used to invoke pack law two hours ago.

Then I clamped my jaw shut.

I would not give her more than that.

The brand stayed pressed against my skin. Five seconds. Ten. I could smell my own flesh burning, could feel the silver shackles biting deeper as my body tried instinctively to pull away. I fixed my gaze on the dirt between my knees and breathed.

In. Out. In.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist, the old reflex, the childhood self-soothing gesture I had carried for twenty years. The shackle made the motion almost impossible, but I did it anyway. Once. Twice.

The mate bond in my chest didn't just go cold.

It went dark.

Like a candle extinguished in a room that was already dim. Like the last thread of connection between me and the man on the balcony had been severed at the root, cauterized, erased.

I felt it die.

Rachel pulled the brand away. The air smelled like wolfsbane and burned skin and something else I couldn't name. My vision narrowed at the edges, the pain and the poison and the silver combining into something my body couldn't process anymore.

Through the tunnel of my fading sight, I found her.

Taytum.

She was at the edge of the training yard, held back by a sentry whose hand was clamped around her small shoulder. Her face was streaked with tears. Her left hand was pressed flat against the pocket of her dress, where the smooth stone—the "moon piece"—lived.

Her eyes found mine.

She didn't look away.

Five years old, and she straightened her spine and held my gaze with a steadiness that should not exist in a child her age. She wasn't trying to be brave. She was refusing to let me be alone.

Something in my chest—below the dead bond, below the white noise of the wolfsbane pain, below every lie I had been told and every truth I had ignored—recognized what my daughter was doing.

She was witnessing.

So I would not disappear into the dark without being seen.

The thing that had been cracking inside me for twenty years stopped cracking.

It broke.

Not loudly. Not violently. Just... broke. Like a dam that had been holding back a river for so long that everyone had forgotten the river was there.

And beneath the breaking, something else stirred.

Not my wolf. Not the one that had gone silent under the wolfsbane brand.

Something older.

I felt it move in my chest, slow and deliberate, like a massive thing waking from a sleep it should never have been forced into. The silver shackles began to burn hotter against my wrists, but the pain felt distant now, like it was happening to someone else.

The wolfsbane in my blood recoiled.

Not all at once. Not yet.

But it recoiled.

I drew a breath that didn't shake. Lifted my head. Met Rachel's eyes.

And I said, very quietly, in a voice that was mine and also not mine:

"You should have killed me when you had the chance."

Rachel blinked.

Then the shackles cracked.
