Chapter 5

The neutral territory crossing was quiet when I arrived. No pack markers. No scent boundaries. Just open ground where agreements were made and alliances tested.

Flynn was already there. His black wolf form stood at the edge of the clearing, massive and silent. When he saw me, he shifted. The transformation was fluid, practiced. Within seconds he was standing in human form, fully dressed, his expression unreadable.

This was our third meeting here. The first two had been carefully professional. Strategic updates. Resource coordination. The kind of conversations that could be documented and defended if anyone questioned them.

This one felt different.

I walked toward him. My wolf was restless beneath my skin, humming with an energy I didn't want to name.

"Valerie," he said quietly.

"Flynn."

He reached into the bag at his feet and pulled out a rolled map. Spread it on the flat stone between us. The paper was new, the ink still sharp.

I looked down.

Nighthollow's territorial boundaries had tripled. The northern buffer zone was marked in dark green — secured, integrated, defended. The eastern corridor I'd granted access to now connected directly to two major trade routes. Strategic positions that had been worthless in isolation were suddenly critical nodes in a network.

Flynn's pack wasn't struggling anymore. It was formidable.

"This is what you made possible," he said. His voice was low. Steady. "Every boundary line on this map exists because you redirected resources no one else would have risked."

I studied the map carefully. Traced the new borders with my eyes. "You executed well. Strategy only works if someone can implement it."

"I know what this cost you." His hand rested on the edge of the map, close to mine. "The political risk. The questions you're deflecting. The careful dance you're doing to keep anyone from seeing what you've built here."

I looked up at him. His eyes were dark. Serious. There was something in his expression I hadn't seen before — or maybe I'd seen it and refused to acknowledge it.

"It was the right move," I said quietly. "Strategically."

"Was it only strategic?"

The question hung between us. Direct. Unavoidable.

I should have deflected. Should have smiled and redirected the conversation back to safe territory. But my wolf was too close to the surface, and Flynn was looking at me like he already knew the answer.

"No," I said finally. "It wasn't only strategic."

His hand moved. Just slightly. His fingers brushed mine at the edge of the map. The contact was so brief it could have been accidental.

It wasn't accidental.

Neither of us acknowledged it. Neither of us pulled away.

My wolf went absolutely still. Then she started howling. Not in distress. In recognition.

I stepped back. Carefully. Deliberately. "I should go."

Flynn nodded once. He rolled up the map without breaking eye contact. "The Banquet is tomorrow."

"It is."

"Whatever happens there—" He paused. Chose his words carefully. "I'll be watching."

I knew what he meant. He wasn't talking about the celebration. He was talking about what came after.

I turned and walked back toward my car. My hands were steady. My expression was controlled.

But my wolf was howling all the way home.

---

I spent the rest of the day preparing.

The Pack Banquet invitations had gone out two weeks ago. Formal. Elegant. Celebrating the five-year anniversary of the Silverfang-Hollow Creek alliance.

Every allied Alpha in the region had accepted. Representatives from the Lycan King's court were attending. And Lea Martinez — at Zander's specific request — was listed as a 'pack administrative consultant.'

Zander believed the Banquet was a goodwill gesture. A public celebration of our bond. A way to solidify Hollow Creek's position within Silverfang's sphere of influence.

He had no idea what I'd actually planned.

I sat at my father's desk and opened the locked case one final time. The files were complete. Intercepted mind-link transcripts. Financial records showing Silverfang supplies traded for luxury renovations on a private cabin. False patrol reports documenting fabricated rogue attacks.

Every piece of evidence was irrefutable. Documented. Verified.

I closed the case and locked it.

Then I reviewed the seating arrangement I'd personally designed. Rebecca Lewis would sit directly across from two of Silverfang's most senior warriors — men who had served under my father and whose loyalty was absolute. Adrian Cole, Flynn's Beta, would be adjacent to her. His role for the evening had been carefully briefed.

Everything was in place.

I pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist. Felt my pulse. Steady. Strong.

Tomorrow, the list would be finished.

---

Flynn arrived at Silverfang's border the night before the Banquet.

He'd requested a pre-event coordination meeting. Standard protocol. Daniel met him at the border and escorted him to the conference room.

We discussed logistics. Security rotations. Guest accommodations. The kind of operational details that justified the meeting on paper.

When the formal business concluded, Daniel glanced at me. I nodded once. He excused himself quietly and left.

The room went silent.

Flynn stood at the window, looking out at Silverfang's territory. The lights of the pack house glowed in the distance. He didn't turn around when he spoke.

"After tomorrow," he said quietly, "whatever it costs you — I need you to know I'm not going anywhere."

I went very still.

He turned then. Looked at me directly. His expression was open. Unguarded in a way I'd never seen from him.

"I don't know exactly what you're planning," he continued. "But I know it's going to change everything. And I know it's going to hurt."

I studied him for a long time. This man who had risen from nothing with the resources I'd covertly funneled to him. Who had never once asked me for more than I offered. Who knelt to my authority in public and treated the alliance we'd built like something sacred.

"I know," I said finally.

It was the most I would allow myself. Not yet. Not until the list was finished.

But it was enough.

Flynn nodded once. He didn't push. Didn't ask for more. He simply looked at me like he understood exactly what those two words meant.

Then he left.

I stood in the conference room for a long time after he was gone. Then I walked to the window and looked out in the direction he'd driven.

My wolf was quiet. Warm. Settled in a way she hadn't been in five years.

Tomorrow, everything would break.

But tonight, just for a moment, I let myself feel what it was like to be seen.
