Chapter 2

The neutral-territory crossing was a stretch of forest neither pack claimed — too far from Silverfang's core territory to patrol regularly, too exposed for Hollow Creek to defend. It was the kind of place where agreements happened when you didn't want witnesses.

I arrived first. Daniel had offered to accompany me, but I'd refused. What I was about to do required no audience. Not even my Beta.

The forest was quiet. Early morning light filtered through the canopy in pale gold streaks. I stood at the edge of the clearing and waited.

My wolf was restless. She had been since the moment I'd confirmed the meeting. Not the anxious restlessness that came before a fight. Something else. Something that felt like recognition.

I heard him before I saw him. Footsteps, measured and unhurried. Then Flynn Howard stepped into the clearing.

And the world narrowed.

The scent hit me first. Deep cedarwood and winter rain. Clean and sharp and utterly overwhelming. My wolf went absolutely still — the kind of stillness that comes before something irreversible — and then she began to tremble.

Flynn stopped walking. Twenty feet separated us. He didn't move closer.

I couldn't breathe properly. The air between us felt thick, charged with something I had no name for. Wild honeysuckle and thunderstorm — my own scent — rose so strongly I could taste it. It tangled with his cedarwood, and the combination filled the clearing so completely that for ten full seconds, neither of us spoke.

His wolf was visible in his eyes. Dark, intent, and utterly focused on me.

I forced myself to breathe. To think. To remember why I was here.

Flynn's voice came low and careful. "Tell me what you need, and it's yours. No conditions."

No conditions.

Zander had never once offered me anything without conditions. Every resource I'd given him had come with a delay, a negotiation, a reason why it wasn't quite enough yet.

I looked at Flynn steadily. My wolf was still trembling, but my voice came out clear. "I need Nighthollow to rise. Fast enough and strong enough that when Hollow Creek falls, the regional power vacuum doesn't destabilize everything my father built."

Flynn's expression didn't change, but something in his posture shifted. Became even more focused. "What are you offering?"

"Elite warriors," I said. "Dispatched under the cover of joint training exercises. Political endorsements routed through intermediary packs so the support isn't directly traceable to Silverfang. And strategic territory corridor access that will transform Nighthollow's geographic position overnight."

His eyes narrowed slightly. Not suspicion. Calculation. "That's not an alliance. That's an elevation."

"Yes," I said simply.

"And in return?"

I held his gaze. "You become strong enough to absorb what's left of Hollow Creek when I'm done with it. You stabilize the region. And you never — not once — treat what I give you as something you're owed."

Silence. The forest around us was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat.

Flynn took one step forward. Just one. The scent intensified. My wolf's trembling became something closer to a whine.

"I keep a record," he said quietly. "Of every resource I receive. Every warrior, every corridor, every political favor. When this is over, I will repay every allocation. Not because you'll ask. Because that's what you deserve."

Something in my chest cracked. Just slightly. Just enough to hurt.

I nodded once. "Then we have an agreement."

Flynn's gaze held mine for another long moment. Then he said, even quieter: "He doesn't deserve you."

I didn't answer. There was nothing to say that wouldn't make this harder than it already was.

I turned and walked back toward Silverfang territory. I didn't look back. But I felt his eyes on me the entire way.

---

The redirects began the next morning.

I dispatched fifteen of Silverfang's elite warriors to Nighthollow under the official designation of 'joint training exercises.' Daniel handled the paperwork with his usual efficiency, his expression carefully neutral.

I routed political endorsements through two intermediary packs — smaller allied territories that owed Silverfang favors and wouldn't ask questions. The endorsements would reach Nighthollow within the week, elevating Flynn's standing in regional council votes.

And I granted strategic territory corridor access. A narrow strip of land that connected Nighthollow's eastern border to a major trade route. On paper, it was a minor adjustment. In reality, it transformed Nighthollow's geographic position from isolated to central.

Flynn would understand what it meant. Everyone else would notice too late.

Simultaneously, I increased my visible generosity toward Hollow Creek.

I offered Zander an additional warrior battalion. Twenty wolves, fully trained, dispatched to his border patrols.

He accepted with satisfied ease. "You're incredible, Valerie," he said over the phone, his voice warm. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You won't have to find out," I said smoothly.

He laughed. That easy, confident sound. The sound of a man who believed he had already won.

I ended the call and stared at the phone for a long moment.

Zander noticed nothing. Flynn noticed everything.

---

Three days later, Daniel walked into my office and set a file on my father's desk.

I looked up from the pack ledgers. "What is it?"

"First installment," Daniel said quietly. "Intercepted mind-link communications. Border patrol captain to Alpha Zander, dated over the past eight months."

I opened the file.

The transcripts were precise. Clinical. Each one documented a false rogue sighting report — fabricated attacks that had never happened, filed by Zander's own captain on Zander's direct orders.

Three reports. Each one timed to precede a resource demand to Silverfang.

I read them twice. My expression didn't change.

Daniel watched me carefully. "There's more coming. Financial records. Supply manifests. But this is enough to start."

I closed the file and looked at him. "Good work."

He nodded once and left.

I sat at my father's desk for a long time. Then I opened the locked case beneath it and added the file to the others.

The case was filling up.

---

The next morning, I was at the training grounds at dawn.

I always oversaw warrior drills three mornings a week. My Beta considered it unnecessary. My warriors considered it the highest mark of respect.

I shifted into my wolf form. Silver-white fur, winter-storm eyes. The warriors lowered their gazes instinctively when I stepped onto the field.

I ran them hard. Harder than usual. They didn't complain. They never did.

When the session ended, I shifted back and walked to the edge of the field. My wolf was still humming beneath my skin, restless and unsettled.

I pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist. Felt my pulse. Steady. Strong.

I was still whole.

For now.
