Chapter 4

Dara came to my office just after dawn with a sealed evidence folder and a cup of coffee she knew I'd need.

She set both on my desk without preamble. "First round of results," she said. "Scent-sealed. Timestamped. Council-admissible."

I opened the folder. Inside were three analysis sheets, each bearing Dara's certification seal and the healer's mark that made them legally unassailable. The first two were Ironclaw Deltas — warriors who'd had recent contact with Hollowfang envoys during border negotiations. Evie Brooks's biological signature was confirmed on both. Skin contact. Clothing transfer. The kind of evidence that couldn't be explained away as coincidence.

The third sheet made me pause.

Johnathan Willis. Hollowfang's war-captain. Medical sample collected during a formal diplomatic visit six months ago — standard protocol for any visiting wolf entering pack territory. Dara had run it against the archive.

Evie's scent was all over it.

"How old is this sample?" I asked.

"Six months. But the signature match is ninety-seven percent certainty." Dara leaned against the doorframe. "She was with him before Isaiah. Probably during. The concentration suggests repeated contact over an extended period."

I closed the folder and added it to the dossier in my locked drawer. The evidence was building into something Isaiah wouldn't be able to talk his way out of. But it wasn't enough yet.

"We need one more pack," I said.

Dara nodded. She'd already anticipated that. "I'll pull samples from the Greycrest delegation visit. They sent a trade envoy last spring. If she was working a pattern, she would've been there."

"How long?"

"Forty-eight hours."

"Do it."

She left without another word. I sat at my desk and stared at the locked drawer for a moment. The tribunal dossier was almost complete. Isaiah's written note attempting to negotiate post-rejection. Evie's scent evidence across multiple packs. Johnathan Willis's complicity through documented contact.

I pressed my fingertips together once, then released them.

Then I went back to the border reports.

---

Mathias found me in the war room just after midnight.

I'd been there since ten, going over the eastern perimeter maps. Hollowfang had been quiet for three days — too quiet. Isaiah's presence at their border camp had emboldened them, and I knew from experience that emboldened wolves made stupid decisions.

Mathias didn't knock. He never did. Just appeared in the doorway with two mugs of tea and a stack of updated patrol logs.

"Thought you'd still be here," he said.

I gestured to the empty chair across from me. He set the tea at my elbow — exactly where I would've reached for it — and spread the logs across the table next to the maps.

We worked in silence for a while. It was the kind of silence that had developed over weeks of shared command. Easy. Efficient. He knew which reports I needed before I asked. I knew which sections of the map he'd focus on without directing him.

At some point, I leaned across the table to mark a patrol rotation on the eastern quadrant, and his scent hit me properly for the first time.

Warm amber. Thunderstorm. Rich and clean and entirely without echo.

No cedar. No frost. Nothing of Clark. Nothing of Isaiah's borrowed ghost.

I stopped mid-sentence. My hand froze over the map.

Mathias noticed. I felt his gaze shift to me, steady and unhurried. He didn't say anything. Didn't ask. Just waited.

My wolf went very, very quiet. Not distressed. Not grieving. Just — listening. Paying attention in a way she hadn't in five years.

I forced myself to finish the sentence. To mark the rotation. To look back at the map as if nothing had shifted.

Mathias reached across the table, refilled my water glass from the pitcher without comment, and set it at my elbow. Then he returned to the patrol logs.

I stared at the map. The lines blurred slightly. I blinked and they came back into focus.

Amber and thunderstorm. A scent that belonged entirely to the present. To someone who had been standing at the edge of my vision for years, waiting without asking, present without demanding presence.

I picked up my pen and kept working.

But the scent stayed with me. And my wolf stayed quiet. And I knew, with absolute certainty, that something fundamental had just changed.

---

The border alarm hit the pack mind-link at 2:04 a.m.

I was still in the war room. Mathias had left an hour ago to run a perimeter check. I'd been reviewing supply manifests, which was the kind of unglamorous work that kept a pack functional during a crisis.

The alarm was sharp and immediate. Eastern borderlands. Multiple hostiles. Hollowfang signature scents.

I was on my feet before the second pulse came through.

I sent deployment orders through the link in under sixty seconds. Full defensive formation. Deltas to the eastern line. Gammas to hold the secondary perimeter. Healers on standby at the pack house.

I was halfway to the door when Mathias's voice cut through the link, quiet and absolute.

*I'm already en route. Stay at the pack house.*

I ignored him.

I shifted the moment I hit the tree line and ran.
