Chapter 2

She arrived at eight in the morning, while the pack house still smelled like last night's banquet — cold candle wax and spilled wine and the particular tension that settles into walls after something irreversible has happened.

I heard her before I saw her. The click of heels on the front steps. Unhurried. Deliberate. The walk of someone who believed she was arriving to collect a prize.

Evie Brooks stepped through the front door with Isaiah's coat folded over one arm and a smile that she'd clearly been rehearsing since last night. Her jasmine-and-crushed-berries scent rolled in ahead of her like an announcement.

I was standing in the corridor, going over the morning's dispatch reports. I didn't look up.

"The boxes are in the east hallway," I said. "Take them and go."

She stopped a few feet away. I heard the smile shift in her voice before she spoke.

"That's it? No goodbye speech?" A pause, studied and light. "I figured you'd at least want to say something. Given everything."

I turned a page.

"Looks like he finally upgraded." Her voice dropped into something almost sympathetic, which was worse. "That mark on your neck — it's gray, isn't it? I saw it last night from across the room. Dead marks are so — " she made a small sound, like she was searching for the right word — "final."

I set the papers down.

I crossed the distance between us in four steps, and before she could adjust the smile on her face, my hand was around her throat. Not squeezing. Just there — fingers spread, palm against her pulse, which jumped hard the moment I made contact.

I walked her backward into the doorframe. The wood cracked on impact. A clean, sharp sound that echoed down the corridor.

Evie's eyes went wide. The smile was gone.

I held her there for three seconds. I looked at her the way I looked at a border map — assessing, measuring, deciding what was worth the resource and what wasn't.

"Colt. Denny." I didn't raise my voice.

The two Deltas who had been waiting at the end of the hall moved immediately. They knew what I needed without being told. That was the difference between warriors who had trained under me and warriors who hadn't.

"Get her off pack territory," I said. "Don't let her back on without my direct authorization."

I released her throat. She gasped — not because I'd hurt her, but because she hadn't expected to be afraid of me, and now she was, and she didn't know what to do with that.

Colt and Denny each took an arm. They were efficient and impersonal about it, which was exactly right.

Evie found her voice somewhere near the door. "Isaiah will hear about—"

"He already knows what I'm capable of," I said. "That's why he left."

The door closed behind them.

I picked up my papers. My hands were steady.

Isaiah arrived eleven minutes later. I know because I was watching the clock, not because I was waiting for him — I was waiting to see how long it would take him to decide whether this was a battle worth fighting. Eleven minutes meant he'd hesitated. That was new.

He came through the door fast, his Alpha tone already building at the base of his throat. "What did you do to—"

"You rejected me," I said.

The words were quiet. Flat. Not a reminder — a fact being filed into the record.

"You have no voice in this house."

His mouth stayed open for a moment. The Alpha tone died before it fully formed. He looked at me the way he had last night in the hallway — that flicker of something behind his eyes that I had never seen before and did not feel charitable about.

He left that night. Packed what remained of his things and moved to Hollowfang's border camp — which told every allied pack exactly where his loyalties had relocated. By the following morning, my inbox had fourteen messages from pack representatives asking for clarification on Ironclaw's command structure.

I answered every one of them before the war council convened at noon.

---

Rowan Hale planted both fists on the strategy table and looked at me like he was doing me a favor by being honest.

"Beta rank," he said, "goes to a proven wolf. High aura. Full shift. Not—" he paused, choosing the word carefully, "—an academy trainee whose wolf has barely half-emerged. The pack won't follow him into a border crisis. That's not opinion. That's biology."

Around the table, six senior Deltas kept their eyes carefully neutral. None of them agreed out loud. None of them disagreed either.

I let the silence sit for a moment.

"Name one border shift Mathias missed," I said.

Rowan's jaw tightened.

"Name one training session he left early. Name one order he failed to execute."

Nothing. The room was very quiet.

"Rowan." I turned to look at him directly. "You left the eastern perimeter check unfinished on the fourteenth of last month because you had a dispute with your squad-mate. I covered it with a Delta rotation at 3 a.m. and didn't log it against you." I looked at the wolf to his left. "Garrison, you missed the allied delegation briefing in September. I sent your notes for you and told the Greycrest representative you'd been on emergency patrol." I moved down the table. "Tomas. The supply manifest you signed off on in October was short by forty units of medical stock. Dara caught it. I didn't escalate it."

I said it all in the same level tone. Not as a threat. As a demonstration.

"I know this pack," I said. "I have known it for five years, and I have been running it for most of that time. When I tell you that Mathias Adams is the right wolf for this role, it is not sentiment. It is the same calculation I have been making on your behalf since before most of you thought to question my judgment."

Rowan took his fists off the table.

"Mathias Adams is hereby promoted to acting Beta and war-captain of Ironclaw Pack, effective immediately and on Council record." I looked around the table. "If anyone has a procedural objection, I'll hear it through the formal grievance process. That process takes fourteen days. We may not have fourteen days. So I'd encourage you to decide quickly whether this is the hill you want to plant your flag on."

No one spoke.

I didn't look at Mathias. I didn't need to. He was standing at the back of the room where he always stood — slightly to the left, close to the door, present without performing presence. But I felt something shift in the air near him. A pressure change, subtle and vast, like weather building at the edge of a clear sky.

His wolf was awake.
