Chapter 5

By noon, Cole had turned Emma's survival into a public ceremony.

The pack square was full when I arrived with one black duffel bag.

"To ensure her recovery," Cole announced from the wooden stage, "Emma will remain in the main estate under twenty-four-hour protection."

Applause rolled through the crowd.

The irony almost made me laugh. Emma had never gone to surgery. Her second scan ruled out the suspected bleed before the trauma surgeon finished reviewing the images. Yet Cole had turned a night of unnecessary priority into proof of her bravery.

No one on the stage mentioned the emergency fetal delivery.

No one mentioned Astra.

The pack knew only that their Alpha's fragile childhood friend had survived a frightening fall and that their Luna had been absent from the celebration. The story had been cleaned before breakfast.

I had spent ten years managing this territory's public image. I knew exactly how dangerous a polished lie could become if no one interrupted it.

So I interrupted it.

I walked straight down the center aisle.

The cheering died one row at a time.

People noticed the hospital bracelet still on my wrist. The pale compression wrap beneath my coat. The fact that I was carrying luggage.

Cole saw me and lowered the microphone.

"What are you doing here?"

"Finishing the announcement."

I climbed the stage.

Emma sat behind him with a white bandage on her forehead and perfect makeup beneath it.

Finn stood near her chair.

I took the microphone.

"I, Lyra Mills, resign the office of Luna effective immediately."

Gasps moved through the square.

Cole grabbed my wrist.

"Stop."

I pulled free.

"The High Council received my mate-rejection petition last night. The security footage from the staircase is under independent review. Until that review is complete, I will not reside in the Alpha House or accept orders from Alpha Cole regarding my movement or medical care."

Emma stood.

"Please don't do this because of me. I will move out."

"Sit down."

My voice was quiet enough that she obeyed before she realized she had.

Cole leaned close.

"You are humiliating the pack."

"You signed Emma's priority form in a public hospital while I hemorrhaged ten feet away. We survived humiliation."

Finn stepped forward.

"Why are you being mean again?"

I looked at him.

"Finn, this is between the adults."

"Aunt Emma almost died."

"No. Her scan was clear."

"She said you hate her."

"I do not care enough about her to build my life around hate."

He crossed his arms.

"I wish she was my real mom."

The square went silent.

Cole did not correct him.

Emma's lips parted in perfect surprise, but triumph flashed in her eyes before she hid it.

I felt something inside me settle.

Finn was ten. Young enough to be manipulated. Old enough for words to have consequences.

"Then you should stop worrying that I am stealing her place," I said.

His anger faltered.

"What?"

"You can live with your father. I will not force you to visit me. If you want contact later, it will happen through a counselor until we know how to speak to each other without using Emma as a weapon."

Tears filled his eyes.

"You're leaving me?"

"I am leaving this house. You are not responsible for my marriage. But I will not let you threaten my place as your mother to control me."

Cole seized the microphone.

"Enough. Guards. Take Lyra back to the medical wing."

Six warriors moved toward the stage.

I reached into my duffel and removed a bronze High Council medallion.

I had earned it at nineteen after protecting a Council envoy during the Red Creek rogue attack. It guaranteed temporary immunity from internal Alpha commands while a petition was under review.

I held it up.

The lead guard stopped.

"Council protection," he said.

"Stand down," another whispered.

Cole's face darkened.

"That token does not dissolve our bond."

"No. But this does."

I pressed two fingers over the dead mark beneath my collarbone.

Astra's absence had left the tether thin and unstable.

I looked directly at Cole.

"I reject you as my mate."

Pain ripped through my chest.

Cole staggered.

"Lyra, don't."

"You chose her surgery over mine. You chose her comfort over my blood. You chose disbelief over evidence. I am done letting your choices become my obligations."

I forced the last of the bond outward.

It snapped.

Cole dropped to one knee.

The crowd recoiled.

I nearly fell too, but the bronze medallion hit my palm and reminded me why I had come.

I walked down the stage steps.

No guard stopped me.

At the iron gate, I looked back once.

Finn was crying.

For a second, every maternal instinct I had built over five years screamed at me to turn around. He was ten. He had been frightened, indulged, manipulated by an adult who knew exactly which gifts and permissions would make him feel loyal to her.

But I also knew what would happen if I rushed back now. He would learn that threatening to replace me had no cost as long as his tears came quickly enough afterward. Cole would learn the same lesson on a larger scale.

So I let the counselor become the bridge instead of my guilt.

I faced the gate again. Beyond it waited a neutral road, a human motel David had arranged, and absolutely no guarantee that my body would hold together.

It was still more freedom than the Alpha House offered, and for the first time I chose uncertainty over a familiar cage.

Cole remained on his knees.

Emma stood behind them with one hand over her mouth.

For ten years, I had believed home was the place I could never abandon.

Now I understood home was the place where no one asked me to disappear so someone else could feel safe.

I crossed the boundary line.

The severed bond burned once beneath my skin.

Then it went cold.

I kept walking.

I did not turn back.
