Chapter 1

The snow was coming down hard that night. I pulled my coat tighter and picked up my pace, cutting through the woods on the edge of town. It was faster than the main road, and I'd walked this trail a hundred times.

That's when I saw him.

A man—no, a wolf in human form—collapsed face-down in the snow. Blood pooled dark against the white ground, spreading from somewhere I couldn't see. His clothes were torn. His skin was pale.

I dropped to my knees beside him and pressed two fingers to his neck. A pulse. Faint, but there.

"Hey," I said, shaking his shoulder. "Can you hear me?"

Nothing.

I looked around. No one. The woods were empty, and the snow was getting heavier. If I left him here, he'd be dead by morning.

I hooked my arms under his and dragged. He was heavy—solid muscle, even unconscious—and the snow made everything harder. My boots slipped. My shoulders screamed. But I kept going, one step at a time, until I got him back to my apartment.

I laid him on the couch and grabbed towels, water, anything I could find. The worst wound was a deep gash across his ribs. I cleaned it as best I could, wrapped it tight, and checked his pulse again. Stronger now. Good.

I sat back on my heels and looked at him. Dark hair stuck to his forehead. Strong jaw. Even beaten half to death, he was... striking.

I shook my head. Focus, Ariella.

I pulled a blanket over him and turned to grab more supplies. That's when his hand shot out and caught my wrist.

I gasped.

His eyes opened—sharp, grey, and locked on mine. And then it hit me.

A shock. Electric. It tore through my body like lightning, starting where his skin touched mine and spreading everywhere. My wolf surged forward, awake and screaming inside my chest.

*Mate.*

The word echoed in my head, clear and absolute. My wolf had never spoken that loudly before.

And his scent—God, his scent. Cedar smoke and winter rain. It filled the room, filled my lungs, wrapped around me like something I'd been missing my entire life without knowing it.

He stared at me. His grip on my wrist loosened but didn't let go.

"You're safe," I managed to say. My voice sounded strange. "You're in my apartment. I found you in the woods."

He blinked slowly, like he was trying to process. Then his gaze dropped to where his hand still held my wrist. He let go.

"Thank you," he said. His voice was rough, low. "You didn't have to do that."

"You would've died."

"Most people would've kept walking."

I didn't know what to say to that. So I just shrugged. "I'm not most people."

He almost smiled. Almost.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Holden," he said. "Holden Davis."

"I'm Ariella. Ariella Morgan."

He nodded, then winced and pressed a hand to his ribs.

"Don't move too much," I said quickly. "That wound is deep. You need rest."

"I don't have a pack," he said suddenly. "If that matters to you."

I frowned. "Why would that matter?"

He looked at me like I'd said something strange. "Most wolves care."

"I'm not most wolves," I said again.

This time, he did smile. Just a little.

Over the next few days, Holden stayed on my couch. I brought him food, changed his bandages, and made sure he didn't try to leave before he was ready. He didn't talk much at first, but slowly, he started to open up.

He told me he'd been packless since he was young. No Alpha bloodline. No rank. No home.

"That sounds lonely," I said one evening, sitting on the floor beside the couch.

"It is," he admitted. He looked at me, and something in his expression softened. "But maybe not anymore."

My heart did something stupid in my chest.

When he was strong enough to walk, I introduced him to Mckenzie. She came over with takeout and eyed him like a hawk the entire time.

"So you're the guy Ariella dragged out of the snow," Mckenzie said, leaning back in her chair.

"That's me," Holden said.

"And you're her mate."

Holden glanced at me, then nodded. "I am."

Mckenzie studied him for a long moment. Then she looked at me. "You sure about this?"

"Kenzie," I said quietly.

She held up her hands. "Just asking."

But I saw the way she watched him when she thought I wasn't looking. Mckenzie had good instincts. She'd saved me once, a long time ago, when I pulled her out of a pack that treated her like dirt. She knew what it looked like when someone was hiding something.

I told myself she was being overprotective.

Weeks passed. Holden and I fell into something that felt like a life. He stayed close. He smiled when I came home. He pulled me into his arms at night, and his scent—that cedar smoke and winter rain—wrapped around me like safety.

But then the absences started.

Small at first. An errand that took too long. A meeting he didn't explain. I'd reach for him through the bond, and he'd feel... distant. Muted.

"Where were you?" I asked one night when he came back late.

"Just handling some things," he said, kissing my forehead. "Nothing for you to worry about."

"What things?"

"Pack business. You wouldn't understand."

I frowned. "Try me."

He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "It's boring, Ariella. Let it go."

So I did.

But my wolf didn't. She whimpered every time he left. Every time he came back smelling like somewhere else. Someone else.

Mckenzie noticed too.

"Something's wrong," she said bluntly one afternoon when Holden was out again.

"He's just busy," I said.

"Busy with what?"

"I don't know. He said pack business."

Mckenzie's expression darkened. "He doesn't have a pack, Ariella."

I looked away. "Maybe he's trying to find one."

"Or maybe he's lying."

"Kenzie, stop."

"I'm serious. You need to ask him—"

"I trust him," I said firmly. "The Moon Goddess gave him to me. That means something."

Mckenzie stared at me for a long moment. Then she sighed. "Fine. But if he hurts you, I'm going to kill him."

I forced a smile. "He won't."

But deep down, in the part of me I didn't want to listen to, my wolf was already howling.
