Chapter 4

The suspension spread through the pack house like smoke. I didn't need to leave my quarters to track it. I could hear it in the footsteps that used to pause outside my door and now hurried past. In the sudden silence when I passed the common areas on my way to the restricted bathroom access they'd granted me twice daily. In the way junior wolves flattened themselves against walls when I approached, eyes down, necks bared in a submission that had nothing to do with respect and everything to do with fear of association.

Chelsea's network worked fast. Nora Webb — her cousin, the administrative official Chelsea had installed two years ago — was particularly efficient. I caught fragments of the story as it evolved: Skye attacked Chelsea out of jealousy. Skye has always been unstable. The Alpha showed remarkable restraint by not stripping her rank entirely. Isn't it tragic, how envy can poison even a fated bond?

That last part made me press my thumb against my wrist until the skin went white.

Lyra was silent now. Not howling. Not whimpering. Just... absent. Like she'd retreated so far into my chest that I couldn't feel her anymore. Maybe that was better. Maybe she was protecting herself the only way she knew how.

I spent the first day organizing my encrypted files and transferring the most critical data to an off-site server I'd set up months ago through a contact in the Lycan Council's research division. The work kept my hands busy. Kept my mind focused on something other than the cold-storage vault, Chelsea's flat confession, Richard's face when he'd chosen — again — to believe her tears over my truth.

Petra tried to visit on the second morning. I heard her voice in the corridor outside, young and uncertain, asking the guard if she could bring me something. The guard's response was clipped: "She's confined. No visitors."

"But I just want to—"

"No visitors. Move along."

I didn't hear Petra's voice again after that. Three days later, I overheard two healers talking in the bathroom during my supervised access. Petra had been reassigned to the outer territory. Border patrol medical support. The kind of assignment you gave someone when you wanted them too far away to cause problems.

I washed my hands and said nothing.

Mrs. Pierce came on the fourth day.

The guard didn't stop her. Whatever authority Richard's mother carried, it superseded confinement protocols. She entered my quarters without knocking, closed the door behind her with a quiet click, and stood for a moment, taking in the stripped-down space. I'd already packed most of my personal belongings into two duffel bags. The room looked like someone was preparing to leave. Or preparing to disappear.

"You're efficient," she said. Her voice was measured. Elegant. The tone of someone who had never needed volume to command attention.

I set down the notebook I'd been coding and met her eyes. "Did you come to tell me something, or to confirm something you already know?"

A small smile touched her mouth. Not warm. Not cold. Just... precise. "Both."

She crossed to the desk and set down a small sealed envelope. Cream-colored paper. No markings. She didn't explain it. Didn't need to.

"The filing you made with the Lycan Council is the right move," she said. "Don't wait."

My chest tightened. I'd told no one about the provisional research claim. It was buried in encrypted Council databases, accessible only through credentials I'd obtained through Elder Arthur's initial fellowship outreach. "How did you—"

"I've been watching longer than you realize." She glanced at the duffel bags. "And I should have spoken sooner. That's a miscalculation I'll carry."

She moved toward the door, then paused with her hand on the handle. "Chelsea's scent was wrong the day she announced the pregnancy. The hormonal markers didn't match. I knew within a week."

I stared at her. "You knew."

"I calculated that challenging her directly would entrench Richard's defense." Her voice was steady. Unsparing. "I was correct in that assessment. I was incorrect in believing that silence was the strategic choice. Your sister paid for my patience. You paid for it. My mother-in-law will pay for it." She opened the door. "Don't make the same mistake I did. When you see the opening, take it."

She was gone before I could respond.

I opened the envelope with shaking hands. Inside: a contact name at the Silverpeak border. A vehicle arrangement with departure coordinates and a time window. And one sentence in elegant ink: *Vehicle will be waiting at the northeast service gate. 0400 hours. No questions asked.*

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and counted to five.

Then I went back to packing.

Richard came to the healing wing at dawn on the fifth day. I didn't see him — I was confined to quarters — but Daniel Reyes told me later, months later, when the whole structure had collapsed and truth was the only currency left.

Richard stood outside Elianna's care ward for four minutes. Daniel had checked his watch. Four minutes of the Alpha standing in an empty corridor, staring at a door he wouldn't open, his jaw tight and his gaze fixed slightly left of the frame.

Then he turned and walked away.

Daniel filed it in his memory. The same way he'd been filing everything else — every scent inconsistency, every timeline gap, every administrative override that didn't match protocol. He was a methodical wolf. A loyal Beta. And loyalty, for Daniel, meant following evidence even when it led somewhere his Alpha didn't want to go.

I didn't know any of this yet. I was in my quarters, coding the last of my research notes and preparing to speak words I'd never thought I would say.

But somewhere in the pack house, the structure was already fracturing. Small cracks. Invisible to anyone not paying attention.

Mrs. Pierce was paying attention.

Daniel was paying attention.

And in her care ward, surrounded by machines that breathed for her, Elianna's heart monitor beeped steady and strong, a rhythm that refused to stop.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist one more time.

Then I opened my laptop and began to compose the message that would sever everything.
