Chapter 2

The banquet hall glittered under crystal chandeliers. Three hundred wolves in formal dress, the air thick with perfume and dominance displays. I stood near the back wall, positioned where the servers entered and exited. My dress was simple — dark grey, long sleeves, nothing that would draw attention. I'd learned that skill over five years.

Richard stood at the head table on the raised platform, commanding the room without effort. His Alpha aura filled every corner. Chelsea sat beside him in emerald silk that caught the light with every movement. Her hand rested on his forearm. Casual. Possessive. The gesture of someone who belonged there.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and watched.

"Tonight, we celebrate Ironveil's strength," Richard began. His voice carried easily, that low register that made wolves straighten their spines. "Our research division has achieved something extraordinary. The Lycan Council has taken notice."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Pride. Anticipation.

"Our wolfsbane-resistance treatments have saved lives across three territories. The work represents years of dedication, innovation, and scientific excellence." He paused, letting the weight of it settle. "The Lycan Council has nominated Ironveil for their annual research honor. This recognition belongs to the wolf who made it possible."

My chest tightened. Lyra stirred, hopeful despite everything.

Richard extended his hand toward Chelsea. "Please join me in recognizing Dr. Chelsea Webb, whose brilliant work has brought this honor to our pack."

The applause was immediate. Thunderous. Chelsea rose with perfect grace, her smile luminous. She moved to Richard's side, and he stepped back, yielding the podium to her.

I stopped breathing.

"Thank you, Alpha Pierce," Chelsea said, her voice warm and slightly breathless. "I'm overwhelmed. This honor belongs to all of us — to every member of our healing wing who supported this research." She glanced around the room, her eyes skipping over my location without pause. "To our Alpha, whose vision made it possible. To our pack, whose trust gave me the freedom to pursue this work."

More applause. Wolves at the nearest tables stood. The gesture spread like a wave.

I looked at the faces in the crowd. Beta Daniel sat three tables from the front, his expression carefully neutral. Mrs. Pierce, Richard's mother, watched Chelsea with the stillness of someone performing a complex calculation. A few of the senior healers exchanged glances — quick, uneasy, then smoothed away.

No one looked at me.

Chelsea continued, her hand still resting on Richard's arm. "I promise to represent Ironveil with the excellence this pack deserves. This is just the beginning." She turned to Richard, and something passed between them. Gratitude, maybe. Or triumph. "Thank you for believing in me."

He smiled. The kind of smile I'd spent five years waiting to receive.

The crowd rose to its feet. The applause became deafening.

I set my untouched glass on the nearest server's tray and walked toward the exit. My steps were measured. Unhurried. No one turned to watch me leave. The noise of celebration followed me into the corridor, then faded as I descended the stairs.

Outside, the night air was cold. I walked across the grounds toward my quarters, Lyra silent in my chest. Not howling. Not whimpering. Just... quiet. The kind of quiet that comes after something breaks.

I thought about the provisional research filing I'd submitted to the Lycan Council's registry six months ago. The one with my name, my methodology, my compounds. The one Chelsea didn't know existed.

I thought about the cipher-coded notebooks in my quarters, the backup servers I'd maintained off-site, the meticulous documentation I'd kept of every experiment, every breakthrough, every moment of genius Chelsea would now claim as her own.

I thought about Elianna, lying in that coma. About the way Richard had used her as leverage. About the choice he'd given me: surrender everything, or watch my sister die.

I reached my door and paused, hand on the handle.

Behind me, the pack house blazed with light and music. Celebration. Victory. Chelsea's victory.

I went inside and locked the door.

Then I sat at my desk and opened my laptop. The fellowship acceptance from Silverpeak was buried in an encrypted folder. I hadn't responded yet. Hadn't committed.

I read it again. *Full research autonomy. Unrestricted lab access. Institutional backing from the Lycan Council.*

Elder Arthur's signature at the bottom. A name that carried weight across every pack territory in North America.

I thought about what Richard had said in his office. *This is better for everyone.*

I thought about Chelsea's hand on his arm. The smile he'd given her. The public credit for five years of my life.

I thought about the Moon Goddess, who had chosen this bond. Who had given me a mate who would never mark me, never choose me, never see me.

I opened a new message window and began to type.

*Dear Elder Arthur,*

*I accept.*

My finger hovered over the send button.

From the pack house, another wave of applause drifted through the night. Fainter now. Distant.

I pressed send.

Then I opened the cipher-coded notebook I'd kept since graduate school and began to write. Not research notes this time. A list. Methodical. Precise.

Everything I would need to disappear.

Lyra stirred once, a whisper of sound that might have been grief or might have been something else entirely.

I kept writing.
