Chapter 3

I slipped out the side exit of the corporate building. The drive home passed in a blur of traffic lights and radio static. I refused to cry. Tears wouldn't pay off a three-million-dollar debt.

I walked into our silent house and went straight for the filing cabinet in the guest room. I yanked the metal drawer open. Manila folders stuffed with financial records filled the space. I grabbed everything with my name on it and dumped the pile onto the dining room table.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

"Hey, Chloe," I said, answering my sister's call.

"Marnie! Are we still on for dinner tonight?"

"I have a terrible migraine. Can we raincheck?"

"Oh, sure. Go lie down. Take some meds."

"I will. Thanks."

I ended the call. I needed the house empty. I stared at the stack of paperwork. Three million dollars in commercial loans. A second mortgage on the house. Two maxed-out credit cards.

My signature sat on the bottom line of every single page.

He had set me up perfectly. I spent the next two hours highlighting account numbers and routing codes. I built a timeline of his financial ruin. The bridge loan was the final piece. The exact amount he needed to vanish.

The front door unlocked at exactly 6:30 PM.

"Marnie? You home?" Rainer called out.

"In the kitchen," I answered. I shoved the last file into a drawer and closed it tight.

He walked in, loosening his tie. The exact same tie I watched him pick up off his office floor hours ago.

"How was your day?" he asked. He leaned in to kiss my cheek.

I turned my head just enough so his lips grazed my jawline instead. "Quiet. Yours?"

"Exhausting. The Japanese investors are running me ragged." He sighed, tossing his briefcase onto the counter. "But I brought you something."

"You did?"

"I know I've been working late," he murmured. He pulled a square velvet box from his pocket. "I wanted to make it up to you."

I opened the lid. A diamond necklace gleamed under the kitchen lights.

"Rainer, it's beautiful," I said.

My stomach twisted. A small printed tag tucked under the velvet insert caught my eye. *Cartier. $45,000.*

He bought it today. With the newly cleared loan money. My money.

"You deserve it," he said, stepping behind me. He took the necklace from the box and draped it around my neck. The metal felt like ice against my skin. "You've been so patient with my schedule."

"You shouldn't have spent so much," I replied. I touched the heavy pendant, tracing the sharp edges of the stones.

"Don't worry about the cost. The firm is doing incredible." He secured the clasp. "We're about to close the biggest deal of my career."

"I'm so proud of you," I lied. The words tasted like ash.

"I couldn't have done it without you," he said, resting his hands on my shoulders. "You held this family together while I built the company."

"I did my best." I kept my eyes fixed on the blank wall ahead.

He stepped back, admiring the jewelry. "Actually, there's something else we need to discuss."

I turned to face him. "Oh?"

"I have to fly out next week. A business trip."

"Where to?"

"Tokyo," he lied smoothly. "To finalize the merger details with the executives."

"How long will you be gone?"

"A week. Maybe ten days."

Malaysia. First class. With Vera.

I smiled. I reached up and smoothed his lapel. "You work too hard. But if it secures our future, you have to go."

"Exactly," he agreed. "It secures our future."

"Will you have time to sightsee?" I asked, tilting my head.

"Doubtful. It's going to be back-to-back meetings."

"That's a shame. You should at least try to visit the beaches."

"In Tokyo?" He chuckled.

"Oh, right. I was thinking of somewhere tropical." I patted his chest. "I'll pack your bags this weekend. Make sure you have everything you need for the flight."

"You're the best wife a man could ask for," he said.

I laughed. A loud, bright sound that echoed off the tile walls.

Rainer blinked, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What's so funny?"

"I'm just happy," I replied, forcing my lips to stay curved upward. "I feel like everything is finally falling into place."

"It is," he promised.

The next morning, Rainer kissed my forehead and left for the office at 7:00 AM.

At 7:05, I dialed Marcus at the bank.

"Marcus, it's Marnie Miller."

"Mrs. Miller! Good morning. Did you get my message yesterday about the wire transfer?"

"I did. But there's a change of plans."

"Oh? How can I help?"

"I need to freeze the account. Immediately."

"Freeze it? Is there a problem with the funds?"

"I suspect fraudulent activity," I stated flatly. "As the sole guarantor, I am officially requesting a complete hold on the three million dollars. No transfers in or out."

"Understood. I'll need you to sign a verification form, but I can place a temporary lock right now."

"Do it. Send the form to my personal email. Not the business one."

"Done. The funds are locked, Mrs. Miller."

"Thank you, Marcus."

I hung up. The money was safe. Rainer was trapped. But freezing the cash wasn't enough. I needed proof of his embezzlement, his affair, his plan to flee.

I opened my laptop and started searching for private investigators.

The phone on the kitchen counter buzzed. An unknown number flashed on the screen.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Mrs. Miller," a low voice said. "I hear you're looking into your husband's offshore accounts. We need to talk."
