The lease documents were spread across Julien's desk like a blueprint for a life I hadn't lived yet.

I leaned forward. Floor plans. Window dimensions. An address in DUMBO. I could see the notes in the margins—his handwriting, small and precise. He'd annotated the light exposure. East-facing. Morning sun.

'How long have you had this?' I asked.

'Three months.'

I looked up at him.

'You knew I'd call?'

He shook his head. No hesitation. 'I knew you were still in there.' He paused. 'I was ready when you were.'

I sat with that for a moment. Three months. While I was cutting pie for Adelina and sleeping in the guest room and staring at bathroom mirrors—he had been holding a lease option on a studio with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Manhattan Bridge. Waiting.

I didn't know what to do with that. The size of it.

I looked back down at the documents. My fingers touched the edge of one page, then stopped.

Fifteen years. And this man had been keeping a door open.

It was after seven when Marcus came in.

The office had emptied out. The floor was quiet except for the low hum of the city coming through the glass. Julien had sent his assistant home an hour ago. He'd ordered food neither of us had touched.

Marcus set a single manila envelope on the desk. He didn't sit down.

'This is the last piece,' he said.

Julien looked at me first. A check. Making sure.

I nodded.

Marcus opened the envelope and laid out three documents. A grant administration record. A letter on university letterhead. A name I recognized immediately—a name connected to Cody's family, buried in the administrative chain.

'The Columbia scholarship,' Marcus said. 'Formally redirected fifteen years ago. The grant contact had a prior relationship with the Evans family. It was processed as an administrative reassignment.' He paused. 'The recipient was Adelina Castro.'

I didn't move.

I read the name again. Adelina Castro. In clean, official type. On a document dated the same year I gave up my spot.

The room was very quiet.

I had spent fifteen years believing I had made a choice. That I had given something up. That it had been mine to give.

It wasn't a choice. It was a theft. Dressed up as circumstance. Carried out by a man who slept next to me for fifteen years and never said a word.

I felt something move through my chest. Not grief. Not anger. Something colder and cleaner than both.

It settled.

I looked at Julien.

'I want them to have nothing,' I said. 'Nothing at all.'

He held my gaze. Steady. Certain.

'Then that's what they'll have.'

He walked me through it methodically. No drama. Just sequence.

Cody's corporate HR department first. The morality clause in his contract was explicit. The evidence—hotel receipts, text records, security footage—would be delivered simultaneously with a formal legal notice. No warning. No opportunity to get ahead of it.

Derek Yao second. Adelina's husband. Marcus had prepared a separate dossier. Clean, documented, irrefutable. The moment it landed, his accounts would move. Marcus had already confirmed it through a contact at the firm who knew Derek's legal team.

The social media package last. Nora Simmons had been briefed. She knew exactly what to release, when, and where. The narrative was already written. By the time Cody's phone started ringing, the story would already be everywhere.

'All three at the same moment,' Julien said. 'No gap. No time to coordinate a response. No way to do damage control before the damage is done.'

I listened to every word.

Then I picked up the pen.

My hand did not tremble.

We were standing at the window when he mentioned the theater.

The city below was lit up and indifferent, the way it always was. I had my arms crossed. The cashmere coat was over the back of the chair.

'Cody has reserved seats at the Regal uptown,' Julien said. 'Saturday screening. He books the same row every time. Has for years.'

I turned to look at him.

'You know his seat preferences.'

'Marcus knows his seat preferences.'

A beat.

'He's taking the kids,' Julien said. 'And Adelina.'

I understood then. I understood what he was telling me without saying it.

'You already booked seats,' I said.

'Adjacent reserved. Same row.' He looked at me evenly. 'We'll go together Saturday.'

I held his gaze for a long moment. Outside, the lights of the bridge cut clean lines across the dark water.

This man had held a studio lease for three months. He had annotated the morning light. He had answered on the first ring.

I thought about the girl who used to underline every passage in her English textbook. The girl he had watched, and loved, and said nothing—and had spent fifteen years trying to find a way to make right.

'Okay,' I said.

Just that. But he heard everything in it.

He nodded once. And we stood there together in the quiet of the thirty-fourth floor, the city burning bright below us, while somewhere across Manhattan, Cody Evans slept without knowing that every door was already closing.
