Chapter 4

I knew something was wrong the moment I stepped off the elevator.

The office had a particular sound on normal days—keyboards, low voices, the soft percussion of a functional company. Today it was too quiet in the wrong places and too loud in others. Brooke was standing near the glass-walled conference room, a coffee carafe in her hand, watching me cross the floor with an expression I'd seen before. The smile of someone who has already made their move and is waiting for you to walk into it.

I kept my face soft. Grateful. Harmless.

I was three steps from Sterling's office door when it happened.

The carafe tilted. Scalding coffee hit the conference table in a wide arc, and the stack of documents at the center—cream-colored, bound, the kind of paper that costs more than most people's rent—went dark and wet in an instant. Brooke screamed.

'She knocked it! She walked right into me!'

I hadn't touched her. We both knew that. But the junior associate standing by the window—a kid named Tyler who flinched every time Brooke raised her voice—was already nodding before anyone asked him a question.

'I saw it,' he said. Quiet. Certain. Rehearsed.

The room turned toward me.

Sterling came out of his office fast. He took one look at the ruined documents, one look at Brooke pressing her hand to her wrist like she'd been burned, and his face went the color of old ash.

'That's the Hartwell contract.' His voice was very low. 'Kennedy. That is a four-point-seven million dollar contract.'

'Sterling—'

'Don't.' He crossed the floor in six steps and grabbed my arm above the elbow. His grip was hard. Not the first time, but the first time in front of everyone. 'You are a goddamn liability. You have always been a goddamn liability.'

He was moving me toward the elevator before I could finish a breath. The open-plan office had gone completely still. Twenty-two people watching. Not one of them moved.

'Useless,' he said, loud enough for the room. 'You come in here twice a week with your coffee and your croissants and you can't even stand in a room without destroying something.'

The elevator doors were ahead of us. His hand hadn't left my arm.

We passed his office.

The door was open. It was always open when he was out on the floor—he liked people to see the corner view, the mahogany desk, the framed Forbes profile on the wall. The top drawer sat slightly ajar. He'd been in a hurry this morning. I'd watched him leave the house without his usual second check.

My hand moved.

One motion. Smooth and quiet, the way you reach for something you've been reaching for your whole life. The drive was small and cold in my palm. I closed my fingers around it and slid it into my coat pocket in the same second Sterling shoved me into the elevator.

The doors closed.

I let the tears come then. They were real—I want to be honest about that. The humiliation was real. The grip on my arm would leave a bruise. Twenty-two people had watched him drag me across that floor and not one of them had moved. That was real too.

But my hand was steady against my coat pocket, and the drive was mine.

---

Archer didn't ask about the bruise. He looked at it once, jaw tight, and then looked away. That was enough.

Three nights. Black coffee and blue monitor light and the particular silence of two people doing precise work. Archer's decryption tools moved through Sterling's files like a scalpel—layer by layer, patient and exact.

What came out on the other side was not what I expected. I had expected an affair. I had expected some creative accounting. I had not expected this.

Fourteen shell corporations. Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, a holding company in Delaware that existed on paper and nowhere else. Twenty-three million dollars in tax evasion. Fraudulent PPP loan applications from a pandemic year when the company was actually profitable—I could see the real numbers right there beside the filed ones.

And then Archer opened the last partition.

'Kennedy.' He said my name carefully. 'Look at this.'

Payment records. Proprietary algorithm files. Transfer logs routing to an offshore account under a name I didn't recognize at first. Maria Lucia Reyes.

I stared at it for a long moment.

Reyes. Brooke's mother's maiden name. I knew it from a company onboarding document I'd seen in Sterling's files two years ago, back when I still had access to anything.

Brooke had been selling to DataVex. For months. Their competitor. The company whose CEO she'd been photographed with at three industry events I now recalled in sharp, recontextualized detail.

I sat back from the screen.

The apartment was very quiet. Rain against the window. The hum of Archer's equipment.

'Federal prison,' I said. 'Both of them.'

Archer didn't respond immediately. He was looking at me the way he sometimes did—like he was running a calculation that had nothing to do with the screens in front of him.

'You need live system access,' he said finally.

'Yes.'

'That means getting Sterling to hand it to you willingly.'

I looked at the numbers on the screen. Twenty-three million dollars. Fourteen shells. A quarterly tax filing deadline in eleven days.

'He will,' I said.

I opened my notebook to a fresh page and wrote two words.
