Chapter 2

The Plaza's grand ballroom smelled like old money and fresh flowers. Chandeliers threw gold light across a hundred conversations I had no interest in. I stood near the edge of the room with a glass of sparkling water, watching.

Sterling had insisted I come. 'For appearances,' he'd said, not looking up from his phone. So here I was. Appearing.

I'd worn the black gown I bought eight months ago, back when I still believed in occasions worth dressing for. Simple cut, good fabric, nothing that announced itself. Sterling hadn't noticed it when I came downstairs. He'd been too busy checking whether his cufflinks were straight.

Brooke arrived twenty minutes after us.

She wore midnight blue and moved through the room like she owned the floor beneath her heels. Sterling's posture changed the moment she walked in. Just slightly. Just enough. His shoulders dropped half an inch, and the tight set of his jaw went loose. I watched it happen from across the room and filed it away.

For the next hour, she never drifted more than three feet from his side.

I made small talk with a CFO's wife about a restaurant in the West Village. I complimented the head of investor relations on his wife's earrings. I smiled at exactly the right moments and said exactly the right amount of nothing. The old Kennedy—the one who used to make CFOs sweat during audit season—was very still inside me, watching everything.

Brooke found me near the cocktail bar.

She materialized at the edge of a cluster of executives' wives, champagne in one hand, the other wrist tilted just so. The Cartier bracelet caught the light. She'd made sure of that.

'Kennedy.' She said my name the way you'd greet someone you'd almost forgotten existed. 'You look...' A small pause, perfectly timed. 'Rested.'

The women around us smiled politely. One of them glanced at my wrist—bare—then away.

'Have you found any hobbies yet?' Brooke continued, her voice warm with theatrical concern. 'You have so much free time. I keep thinking someone should point you toward a pottery class or something. Something to fill the days.'

Laughter, soft and careful, rippled through the little circle.

I let it settle.

Then I set down my water glass, opened my clutch, and removed two crumpled hundred-dollar bills. The ones Sterling left on the kitchen counter on the first of every month without a word. My entire allowance. I'd been carrying them in that clutch for two weeks, waiting.

I pressed them into Brooke's open palm.

'A tip,' I said. Quiet. Clear. Every woman in that circle heard it. 'For services rendered.'

The silence was immediate and total.

Brooke's smile didn't fall—she was too practiced for that—but something behind her eyes went very still. Her fingers closed around the bills slowly, like she wasn't sure what had just happened.

I was already looking past her.

Across the room, Sterling had gone white. He held a glass of Macallan and did not move. Around him, two investors continued talking, oblivious. He could not come over. He could not make a scene. He could not do a single thing except stand there and watch.

I picked up my water glass and took a calm sip.

'Enjoy the rest of your evening,' I said to no one in particular, and moved away.

---

I cried in the car on the way home. Not for long. Just enough to make my eyes red and my voice unsteady, exactly the way I needed them to be.

Sterling was already in his home office when I got back. I knocked softly and pushed the door open. He looked up from his laptop with the particular expression he reserved for interruptions—flat, barely patient.

'I'm sorry about tonight.' My voice caught on the last word. I let it. 'I don't know what came over me. I embarrassed you in front of your investors and that was—' I pressed my fingers to my lips for a moment. 'That was wrong of me.'

He watched me the way a man watches weather he's decided isn't his problem.

'I just want to feel useful,' I said. 'Could I bring you lunch at the office sometime? Just once in a while. I wouldn't get in the way.'

A pause. Then Sterling leaned back in his chair and looked at me with the magnanimous expression of a man granting a small favor to someone who had finally learned their place.

'Fine,' he said. 'Don't make it a habit.'

'Thank you.' I kept my eyes soft and grateful all the way down the hall.

In the bathroom mirror, I ran cold water over my wrists and watched the redness fade from my face. Then I dried my hands, walked to the kitchen, and opened my notebook to a fresh page.

I wrote two words.

*Phase Two: Access.*

I underlined them once. Closed the notebook. And made myself a cup of coffee.
