Chapter 4

The call came at ten-thirty on a Thursday morning. I was rinsing breakfast dishes. Damon's voice came through the speaker sharp and cold.

"Get to Lenox Hill. Now."

He didn't wait for me to answer. The line went dead.

I dried my hands. I turned off the water. I picked up my purse and my coat. My right hand was still in the cast from the fracture. The doctor had said six weeks. It had been three.

I took the subway. I did not rush.

When I arrived, Damon was in the lobby pacing like something caged. His tie was loose. His jaw was tight. He saw me and his face did something I had seen before — the look he got when a deal was falling apart and someone needed to be blamed.

"Where the hell have you been?"

"You called twenty minutes ago."

He grabbed my arm. Not the broken one. He still had that much awareness left. He pulled me toward the elevator. His fingers dug in hard enough to leave marks I would see later in the bathroom mirror.

"Alivia's upstairs. She's devastated. She lost the baby because of that stunt you pulled."

I did not ask what stunt. I knew better.

The elevator doors closed. Damon stared at the numbers climbing. His breathing was too fast.

"You're going to apologize," he said. "You're going to sit there and you're going to tell her you're sorry."

I looked at him. I did not blink. "Okay."

He blinked instead. He had expected a fight. He had braced for it. I had handed him compliance and it confused him just enough that he loosened his grip on my arm.

The doors opened on the fourth floor.

Alivia's room was at the end of the hall. Private. Expensive. The kind of room you got when someone else was paying.

Damon pushed the door open without knocking.

She was in the bed by the window. Hair loose. Hospital gown. An IV in her left arm that looked too neat, too carefully placed. Her face was swollen from crying. Or from something meant to look like crying.

She turned her head when we came in. Her eyes went wide. Wounded. She looked at Damon first. Then at me.

"I didn't think she'd come," she whispered.

Damon crossed to the bed. He took her hand. He sat on the edge of the mattress the way he used to sit on the edge of mine.

"She's here to apologize."

I stood near the door. I did not move closer. My cast felt heavy. The fluorescent light hummed above us.

Alivia's eyes filled. A single tear slid down her cheek. She did not wipe it away.

He looked at me. Waited.

I walked to the visitor's chair beside the bed. I sat. I folded my good hand over the cast in my lap. I looked at Alivia's face. I studied it the way you study a blueprint. Measuring the supports. Noting the weak points.

"I'm sorry for your loss," I said.

My voice was calm. Even. I meant every word exactly as much as I had meant them in the hospital six weeks ago when Damon brought me white lilies and hollow apologies.

Alivia's breath hitched. She pressed her hand to her mouth. Damon squeezed her shoulder.

"Thank you," she whispered. "That means a lot."

I nodded. I let my eyes drift to the wall behind her bed. There was a chart clipped to a metal holder. Patient name. Admission date. Treatment notes.

I read it the way I used to read contracts. Fast. Thorough.

No pregnancy-related treatment. No miscarriage protocol. No OB consult.

Just observation for minor contusions and a psychological evaluation scheduled for tomorrow.

I looked back at Alivia. She was watching me. Her eyes were red but sharp. Calculating.

I smiled. Small. Polite.

"I hope you feel better soon," I said.

Damon stood. He kissed Alivia's forehead. He told her he'd be back later. He walked me to the elevator without speaking.

When the doors closed, he exhaled.

"Thank you," he said. "I know that was hard."

"It's okay," I said.

He looked at me. Really looked. Like he was trying to figure out what had changed.

I looked back. I let him see nothing.

The elevator reached the lobby. I stepped out first. Damon followed.

"I have some errands to run," I said. "I'll see you at home."

He nodded. He kissed my cheek. He smelled like her perfume.

I walked three blocks before I stopped. I pulled out my phone. I opened the notes app. I typed:

*Lenox Hill. Room 412. Patient chart. No pregnancy treatment. Psych eval scheduled.*

I sent it to Nathan Cole's encrypted email.

Then I deleted the note. I put the phone away.

I kept walking.

Over the next week, Damon asked me to bring Alivia meals. Soup from the place on Lexington. Salads from Sweetgreen. A smoothie she said helped with nausea.

I brought everything he asked for. I smiled. I set the bag on her bedside table. I asked if she needed anything else.

She always said no. She always watched me leave.

Damon called it growth. He told his mother I was being mature about the situation. He told his father I was handling it with grace.

I nodded when he said these things. I agreed.

At night, I lay beside him and listened to him breathe. I thought about the hospital chart. The missing treatment notes. The psych eval that would confirm she was stable enough to go home.

I thought about Nathan Cole's office. The yellow legal pad. The pen that scratched.

I thought about the postnuptial agreement locked in his safe. The handwritten letter folded inside the file.

I thought about the blueprint.

Every line in place. Every measurement exact.

I closed my eyes.

I waited.
