Chapter 4

By seven that evening, the living room was packed again. More cousins had arrived, along with an uncle who smelled like cigar smoke and cheap beer.

I didn't yell. I didn't cause a scene. That wasn't how I operated.

Instead, I went out to my car and brought in the boxes I had left in the trunk.

I handed Fabian's cousin Sarah a brand-new iPad Pro. For his uncle, a bottle of twenty-five-year-old single malt scotch. For the two teenage cousins, noise-canceling headphones.

The room exploded with chatter. Sarah gasped and hugged the box to her chest. "Margot, are you serious? This is insane!"

Uncle Bob held the heavy amber bottle up to the light, whistling low. "Good lord, Fabian. You picked a winner."

I smiled politely. "It’s nothing. Really."

Then I took out my phone. The local volunteer fire department had a flyer taped to Regina's fridge, asking for donations to buy new winter gear. With a few taps on my banking app, I transferred twenty-five thousand dollars directly to their fund. I put it under the Cole family name.

My phone pinged with the confirmation receipt. I showed the screen to Uncle Bob.

"Just a small thank-you for having me," I said softly.

The cousins cheered. Everyone started talking over each other, asking about New York, asking about my company, leaning in to hear every word I said.

Across the room, Regina stood by the kitchen door. Her arms were folded tight against her floral apron. Her smile was pulled so thin her lips looked bloodless. She looked like she had swallowed vinegar. Her folksy little kingdom was slipping right out of her hands, drowned out by the sheer weight of my money.

Destiny wasn't smiling anymore either.

She slipped out of the circle and into the dim hallway. A second later, she caught Fabian's arm as he walked by carrying clean glasses.

I watched them through the open doorway.

Destiny leaned into his shoulder. Her hands went to her face. She let out a small, ragged sob that carried over the sound of the television. She pointed back toward the coat closet where we had spoken earlier. She shook her head, trembling like a leaf in the wind. She was playing the helpless, shattered victim to perfection.

Fabian’s face fell. He patted her arm, his jaw tightening.

He didn't ask what really happened. He didn't come to hear my side.

He set the glasses on a side table and walked straight over to me. He grabbed my elbow and steered me toward the corner of the room, away from the cousins. His grip was warm, but it felt like a cuff.

"Margot," he whispered. His voice was hushed, pleading, and entirely patronizing. "What did you say to her?"

"She’s wearing the robe I bought you for Christmas, Fabian," I said, my voice dead level.

He flinched. His eyes darted away, refusing to meet mine. His free hand went straight to the back of his neck, rubbing that familiar circle of skin.

"It's just an old robe," he muttered. "She’s in tears out there. She said you cornered her and threatened her. Margot, look at yourself. You're a powerful CEO worth millions. She’s just a sweet small-town girl. Can't you just be the bigger person?"

*Be the bigger person.*

The words hit me like a slap in the face.

My fingers dug into the fabric of my sweater. He didn't care about the truth. He didn't care that his childhood sweetheart was parading around in his wife’s gifts. He only cared about keeping everyone quiet. He only cared about smoothing over the cracks.

"The bigger person," I repeated, tasting the poison on my tongue.

He nodded quickly, mistaking my quietness for surrender. "Yes. Exactly. Just let it go, Margot. For me."

Later that night, the house went completely dark.

The only sound was the radiator clanking against the floorboards and the bitter Virginia wind rattling the bedroom window.

Fabian lay on his side, his back turned to me. His breathing was deep, slow, and rhythmic. He slept like a man with an easy conscience.

I lay flat on my back, staring up at the yellowed ceiling.

My chest felt tight, like a heavy stone was sitting on my ribs.

For five years, I had built a fortress around this marriage. I had told myself Fabian was gentle. I told myself his soft nature was the antidote to the cutthroat business world I lived in every day.

Now, lying in the dark, memories started flashing in my head like headlights on a highway.

I thought about the quarterly expense reports from my company that never quite balanced out. The strange consulting fees Fabian had submitted for "regional market research."

I had signed off on every single one of them. My chief counsel, Sylvia, had raised an eyebrow once, warning me to check the vendor names. But I had waved her off.

*Questioning the numbers meant questioning my husband.*

And I had sworn I would never be like my mother—paranoid, bitter, and suspicious. So I had closed my eyes.

I thought about the weekend trips he took twice a year. "Reunions with college buddies," he had always called them. He always came home smiling, smelling faintly of an expensive vanilla body wash.

The exact same heavy, sweet scent that had followed Destiny into the house this morning.

A cold, sickening chill pooled deep in my stomach.

The signs hadn't been hidden. They had been written in plain English, right in front of my face, for years. I had just refused to read them.

Beside me, Fabian shifted in his sleep and sighed softly.

I didn't turn to look at him. I didn't wake him up.

I just kept my eyes fixed on the ceiling, feeling the willful blindness that had kept my marriage alive crack wide open.
