Chapter 1

I sat on the edge of the bed in the hotel room I'd checked into two nights ago. The walls were beige. The sheets smelled like industrial detergent. It was the kind of place where nobody asked questions, which made it perfect.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. I knew who it was before I looked.

*Heidi Owens-Foster.*

I let it ring three times before I picked up.

"Lorelei," she said warmly. Too warmly. "I hope I'm not catching you at a bad time."

I pressed my thumb against the scarred side of my jaw. Old habit. "What do you need, Heidi?"

"I think we should talk," she said. "All of us. As a family."

Family. The word sat in my chest like a stone.

"Hudson made a mistake," she continued. "But marriages survive mistakes. You know that. Your father knows that too."

There it was. My father. Dennis Matthews, whose small real estate firm in New Jersey had been quietly hemorrhaging money for years until Foster Group capital propped it up after the acid attack. A gift, they called it. Gratitude for my sacrifice. But gifts don't come with leashes.

"We'd like you to come to dinner," Heidi said. "Tomorrow night. Just family. We can talk through this like adults."

I closed my eyes. Counted to three. "What time?"

"Eight o'clock. You remember the townhouse address."

"I remember."

"Wonderful," she said, and I could hear the smile in her voice. "We'll see you then, darling."

She hung up before I could respond.

I set the phone down and stared at the blank wall across from me. For five years, I'd walked into that townhouse and made myself smaller every time. I'd listened to Sullivan's lectures about loyalty and Heidi's suggestions about my appearance and Hudson's silence. I'd sat at their table and eaten their food and pretended not to notice the way they looked at my scars like I was something broken they were too polite to throw away.

Not this time.

I picked up my phone again and scrolled to a name I hadn't called in months. Mara Calloway. My college roommate. The one who'd stayed up with me the night before my Wharton finals, the one who'd sent flowers to the hospital after the acid attack, the one who'd asked, more than once, why I was still married to a man who couldn't look me in the eye.

She answered on the first ring. "Tell me you're calling to say you left him."

"I left him," I said.

"Thank God." I heard papers rustling in the background. "Where are you?"

"A hotel in Midtown. Listen, I need a favor."

"Name it."

"How fast can you get a photographer and a reporter to the Upper East Side tomorrow night?"

There was a pause. Then Mara laughed. It was a sharp, delighted sound. "Lorelei Matthews. Are you about to do what I think you're about to do?"

"I'm going to a family dinner," I said. "And I want witnesses."

"Give me the address."

I did. She wrote it down. I could hear the grin in her voice when she spoke again. "What time?"

"Eight forty-five," I said. "Not a minute earlier."

"You're going to burn it all down, aren't you?"

I thought about Hudson's face on that livestream. The way he'd pulled Ayleen into the shadows. The way he'd kissed her like I didn't exist. Like I'd never existed.

"Yes," I said.

"Good," Mara said. "It's about damn time."

We hung up. I sat in the silence of the hotel room and felt something shift in my chest. Not hope. Not yet. But something close.

I opened my laptop and pulled up the divorce agreement I'd printed two days ago. The one Hudson hadn't signed. The one he'd looked at like it was a joke.

I read it again. Every line. Every clause. I'd written it myself with the help of a lawyer I'd found through a quiet referral, paid for with money I'd been saving in an account Hudson didn't know existed. The same account that held the tuition receipts for my Wharton MBA. The same account that held the invoices from the IVF clinic in New Jersey.

I'd been building my exit for two years. I just hadn't known it until the livestream.

I closed the laptop and stood. Walked to the window. Outside, Manhattan glittered in the dark. Somewhere in that grid of lights was the Foster townhouse. The table already set. The lecture already prepared. The performance already planned.

They thought I was coming to be managed. To be soothed. To be convinced.

I smoothed my hand over my jaw one last time. Then I stopped.

Tomorrow night, I wasn't going to make myself smaller.

I was going to take up all the space I'd been denied for five years.

And I was going to make sure the whole city watched.
