The first ultrasound appointment was in a private clinic on the Upper East Side. White walls, hushed voices, the antiseptic smell that reminded me of the facility. I sat on the examination table in a paper gown, my stomach exposed and vulnerable, while Dominick watched the technician's monitor with the intensity of a man reviewing a business proposal.

"Strong heartbeat," the technician said, smiling at us both. "Everything looks perfect."

Dominick's hand found mine, squeezing with a pressure that felt like ownership. "Perfect," he echoed, and I wondered if he was thinking about the child or the inheritance that would soon be his.

I smiled and nodded, the perfect picture of gratitude, while my free hand slipped into my purse and activated the recording app on the burner phone Tristan had given me. The technician continued talking about developmental milestones, and Dominick continued nodding like he cared, and I continued recording every word.

Later that night, I sent the file to Tristan's encrypted email. Another piece of evidence for the growing archive.

The next morning, I accompanied Lyla to the premiere of her new film. She wore a gown the color of blood, and I wore the smile of a supportive sister. Cameras flashed as we walked the red carpet together, her arm linked through mine in a performance of sisterly affection.

"You look radiant," she whispered, loud enough for the nearby reporters to hear. "Motherhood suits you."

I leaned in, playing my part. "Thank you. You look stunning."

She preened, exactly as I knew she would. "Dominick thinks the red is more dramatic than the blue. He has such an eye for these things."

The casual mention of my husband's opinion on her wardrobe choice was a deliberate wound, but I didn't flinch. I'd stopped bleeding for them months ago.

Instead, I laughed lightly and touched her arm. "He does, doesn't he? He's always been so... particular."

Her eyes narrowed slightly at my tone, but she recovered quickly, turning to pose for another photographer. I stood beside her, the perfect prop in her victory narrative, while my mind cataloged every slip, every admission, every piece of evidence Tristan's team was quietly assembling.

Two weeks later, Marcus Hale — Tristan's most trusted lieutenant — delivered a manila envelope to a café three blocks from our penthouse. Inside were copies of the power-of-attorney documents Dominick had forged during my institutionalization, along with bank statements showing the systematic transfer of my inheritance into accounts I'd never seen before. There were emails between Dominick and his family's financial advisors, dating back to before our marriage, discussing the "Reyes acquisition" with the cold precision of a corporate takeover.

I read each page with steady hands, feeling nothing but a cold, clear certainty. This wasn't betrayal — it was confirmation. Every piece of paper was another nail in the coffin I was building for them.

That evening, Dominick came home with flowers — white lilies, Lyla's favorite. He presented them to me with a flourish, playing the role of the doting husband.

"For you," he said, kissing my cheek. "You're doing so well. The doctor says everything is right on schedule."

I accepted the flowers with a grateful smile. "How thoughtful. They're beautiful."

He rested his hand on my slightly rounded stomach, his touch possessive. "I've been thinking about names."

I covered his hand with mine, a gesture that once would have felt like intimacy but now felt like strategy. "I'd love to hear them."

We sat at the dining table — the same table where he'd asked me to carry his child with Lyla — and discussed names for a child that would never be his. With each suggestion, each debate over syllables and family connections, I felt the distance between us growing. Not the distance he perceived — the one between a husband and his pregnant wife — but the true distance: between the man who thought he owned me and the woman who was quietly orchestrating his destruction.

As he spoke, I watched his face, memorizing every expression. The way his eyes lit up when he thought he was winning. The slight furrow in his brow when he was calculating his next move. The casual entitlement in his gestures. I would need to remember all of this when the time came to face him with the truth.

Later, as he rested his hand on my abdomen again, feeling for a kick that wouldn't come for months, I excused myself and went to the bathroom. I gripped the porcelain sink with both hands, pressing my forehead against the cool mirror, and breathed through the revulsion until my face was composed again.

When I returned to the table, I picked up the wine bottle and refilled his glass with steady hands. He smiled at me, pleased with my compliance, with the perfect life he thought he was building on the ruins of mine.

I raised my own glass in a silent toast. "To us," I said.

He clinked his glass against mine. "To us. And to our future."

I smiled and drank, thinking of the evidence hidden in safe deposit boxes across the city, of the child growing inside me that carried Tristan's name, of the reckoning that was coming for them both.
