Chapter 2

He reached across the table and touched the bag.

Not to open it. Just to touch it, his fingertips resting on the plastic like he was steadying himself. His eyes dropped. His jaw worked once, silently.

Then he looked up at me, and his eyes were wet.

"They're not poison, Claire." His voice cracked on my name. "I swear to God, they are not poison."

"Then what are they?"

He exhaled through his nose. Slow. Controlled. The kind of breath a man takes when he's deciding how much truth to spend.

"Giselle's team developed them." He kept his voice low, leaning forward. "They're an anxiolytic. Fast-acting. Experimental — they haven't cleared FDA trials yet, which is why there's no standard labeling. She brought them from Frankfurt."

I looked at him.

"You've been anxious, Claire. You haven't been sleeping. I've watched you for months and I didn't know how to—" His voice broke. He pressed two fingers to his mouth. "I thought I was helping you."

"You replaced my vitamins," I said. "Without telling me."

"I know." He closed his eyes. "I know how that sounds. I know."

"Without my consent."

"I was scared for you." He opened his eyes and they were glassy, the candlelight fracturing in them. "I didn't want to worry you. I thought if I just — if they worked, if you felt better, then I'd tell you. I'd explain everything. I was going to tell you."

The couple at the next table laughed at something. A soft, private laugh. The sound felt very far away.

"And Giselle?" I said.

His throat moved. "She's the one who developed the compound. I needed to coordinate with her directly. The pickups — she was bringing the supply. That's all it was."

"Three times."

"Yes."

"In secret."

"I knew how it would look." His voice dropped to almost nothing. "I knew you'd think exactly what you're thinking right now. That's why I didn't tell you. I was trying to protect you and I handled it wrong. I handled it completely wrong and I am so sorry."

He was good. I'll give him that. The tears were real — or real enough. His hands were shaking slightly on the tablecloth. He looked like a man being gutted.

I thought about the lot number that resolved to a vacant lot in Zurich. I thought about the H that wasn't there.

"I want a divorce, Caleb."

The word landed like a stone dropped into still water.

His face changed. Not dramatically — just a tightening around the eyes, a stillness that moved through him like a current.

"No," he said.

"That's not your decision."

"Claire." He stood up. The chair scraped back and the couple beside us glanced over. He didn't care. He came around the table and crouched down beside my chair, right there in the middle of Canlis, and took both my hands in his. His grip was warm. Firm. "Please. Please don't do this."

I looked down at him. The man I'd married. The man who'd kissed my forehead and said don't wait up and smelled like cedar and coffee and had apparently been quietly feeding me pills from a lab that didn't officially exist.

"I love you," he said. His voice was raw. "I have never stopped loving you. Whatever you think this is — it isn't. I made a terrible mistake and I will spend the rest of my life making it right, but please. Please don't throw this away."

People were looking now. I could feel it.

"Get up, Caleb."

"Not until you hear me."

"You're making a scene."

"I don't care." His hands tightened on mine. "I don't care about any of that. I only care about you."

I pulled my hands free. I picked up my tote, the zip-lock bag inside it, and I stood.

"I'll have my lawyer contact yours," I said.

I walked out. I didn't look back.

---

I packed that same night.

Not everything. Just what mattered. Clothes, my laptop, the small framed photo of my mother from the nightstand. Barnaby watched me from the doorway of the bedroom, his golden head tilted, tail uncertain.

"Come on, buddy," I said.

His tail started moving.

I'd found the apartment two days earlier — a furnished unit in Capitol Hill, month-to-month, nothing fancy. I'd paid the deposit in cash from my personal account, the one Caleb had never touched. I'd been quiet about it. Methodical.

Caleb came home at eleven. I was zipping the last bag when I heard the elevator.

He stood in the bedroom doorway and looked at the suitcases. He looked at Barnaby's leash in my hand. Something moved across his face — something I couldn't name and didn't want to.

"You're leaving tonight," he said.

"Yes."

"Claire—"

"Don't." I picked up the bag. "Please don't."

He didn't move to stop me. He just stood there, one hand braced on the doorframe, watching me wheel the suitcase past him. Barnaby padded after me, nails clicking on the hardwood.

At the front door I paused. I don't know why. Some old reflex.

"I'll send someone for the rest of my things," I said.

He didn't answer.

I left.

---

By morning, his assistant had sent a carefully worded email. Caleb would be staying at the Stone Capital offices indefinitely, out of respect for my space. He wanted me to know the apartment was mine for as long as I needed it. He wanted me to know he wasn't giving up.

I read it once. Then I set my phone face-down on the kitchen counter of my new apartment and looked around at the bare walls and the secondhand furniture and the gray Seattle light coming through the window.

Barnaby pressed his warm weight against my leg.

I put my hand on his head and stood there for a moment, just breathing.

Then I opened my laptop and started making a list.
