My Husband Used My Black Card to Impress His Mistress Chapter 1

The card was heavier than I expected.

I stood in the marble lobby of Pacific Crest Bank and turned it over in my fingers. Black. Matte. No numbers on the front, just my name etched in silver: MARIANA MORALES. The woman at the private client desk had smiled when she handed it to me—a real smile, not the customer-service kind.

"One billion dollar spending limit. Twenty-four hours. You've earned this, Ms. Morales."

I must have said thank you. I don't remember. I just remember walking out into the October afternoon with the card pressed against my palm and thinking: Callen is going to lose his mind.

I couldn't wait to see his face.

---

He was already home when I got there. That should have been the first thing I noticed—Callen was never home before seven. But I was too lit up to think straight. I came through the door fast, coat half off, card held out like a trophy.

"You will not believe what happened today."

He looked up from the kitchen counter. Something moved across his face—quick, gone before I could name it—and then he smiled. That wide, easy smile I fell in love with.

"Tell me everything," he said.

He already had champagne open. Two glasses poured. I set the card on the counter and started talking, and he listened with both elbows on the granite, watching me the way he used to when we were first together. I felt warm. I felt seen.

I didn't notice his eyes drop to the card.

I didn't notice the way he refilled my glass before I was halfway done.

I just kept talking, and the room got soft around the edges, and his voice started to sound far away, and I thought, I'm just tired, it's been such a long day—

And then nothing.

---

I woke up to cream walls and the smell of leather and something expensive and neutral, like a hotel that cost more than it showed.

My head was a fist squeezing from the inside. I pushed myself upright and the room tilted. My purse was on the side table—open, empty where the card had been. My phone was in my hand somehow, screen cracked at the corner, notifications stacked so high the number had stopped counting.

"Ms. Morales."

The voice was quiet. Controlled. I turned.

He was standing several feet away—far enough to be deliberate about it. Dark suit, no tie, the kind of stillness that didn't come from calm so much as from practice. He looked like a man who had delivered bad news before and had learned exactly how much space to give people when he did.

"My name is Atticus White. I'm the VP of Client Relations here at Pacific Crest." A pause. "You're safe. You're in our private client suite. Our fraud detection flagged irregular activity on your card approximately two hours ago. When we couldn't reach you, we dispatched a security team to your last known address." Another pause, smaller. "They found you unconscious in your apartment lobby."

I stared at him. "Callen—"

"Someone is actively using the card right now." He turned the laptop on the table toward me. "I need you to see this."

---

One million viewers. One point two. The number ticked upward in the corner of the screen like a wound that wouldn't stop bleeding.

The penthouse was The Mark. I recognized the windows. Callen was sprawled on a cream sofa with designer bags stacked around him like a throne, champagne in hand, grinning at the camera with every tooth he had.

Alexia was beside him.

She was wearing my green dress. The silk one I'd bought for our anniversary dinner last year. She had her legs across his lap and she was laughing at something, and her laugh was the same laugh I'd heard a thousand times at my own kitchen table.

Callen leaned into the camera. "Shoutout to my soon-to-be-ex," he said. "Pathetic charity case who never deserved to breathe the same air as real money. Baby, thank you for the card."

The chat exploded. Emojis. Laughing faces. Fire.

I watched my hands. They were shaking.

Then Callen reached behind the sofa.

I knew what it was before he held it up. I had packed it myself that morning, wrapped it in tissue, written the note in my best handwriting. Three weeks. I had spent three weeks folding those cranes—sixty-three of them, one for every week of our first year together. Each one a specific memory I'd wanted to keep.

He read the note aloud in a high, mocking voice. The chat roared.

Then he dropped it to the marble floor.

And he stomped.

One crane. Two. The sound didn't come through the speakers but I heard it anyway, somewhere behind my sternum. Three cranes. Four. Alexia's laugh. Five. Six. The chat flooding with rocket emojis and crown emojis and laughing until crying.

I watched every single one go flat.

And somewhere around the fifteenth crane, my hands stopped shaking.

Just—stopped.

The room was very quiet. Atticus hadn't moved. He was watching me the way you watch someone standing at the edge of something high, not reaching for them, just present.

"Ms. Morales," he said carefully. "What do you need?"

I looked at the screen. At Callen's foot. At the crushed paper on the marble floor that used to be everything I felt for him.

"I need," I said, and my voice came out low and even and completely unrecognizable to me, "to make sure he loses everything."
