Chapter 2

The diner emptied out around five. A busboy wiped down the tables. The cook changed shifts. I sat in my corner booth and watched the sky go from black to gray to the pale, washed-out white of a Seattle winter morning.

I had two decisions by the time my second coffee went cold.

I pulled out my phone. Leroy had sent eleven messages. I didn't read them. I scrolled past all of it and found a number I hadn't touched in three years, still saved under a first name only.

Kingston.

I stared at it for a moment. Then I pressed call.

It rang twice.

"Elina." His voice was exactly as I remembered. Calm. Unhurried. Like he'd been expecting the call, just not necessarily today.

"I'm looking for work," I said. No preamble. No explanation.

A brief pause. Not hesitation. More like a man setting something down carefully before he spoke.

"I have a position that's been waiting for the right candidate," he said. "Come in today."

That was all.

I took a cab to my sister Diana's apartment, showered, borrowed a blazer that was slightly too big in the shoulders, and told her nothing except that I was fine. She looked at my face and didn't believe me. She handed me a travel mug of chai without being asked.

"Call me tonight," she said.

"I will."

She grabbed my wrist before I reached the door. "Elina. Tonight."

"I know," I said. "I will."

Kingston's corporate headquarters was a glass tower in the South Lake Union district. I'd driven past it a hundred times in the years I'd been away from the industry. I'd never let myself look directly at it.

The lobby was all clean lines and quiet efficiency. A receptionist directed me to the eleventh floor. The elevator opened onto an open-plan office that smelled like coffee and printer paper and something that felt, uncomfortably, like the place I was supposed to have been all along.

And there it was.

The corner desk. East-facing window. The best light in the room, even in December. Cleared. A new monitor, still in its box. A chair adjusted to a height I hadn't specified.

I stood there for a second too long.

I didn't understand it yet. I just noted it the way I noted everything—filed it, moved on.

Kingston's office was at the far end. Glass walls, vertical blinds half-drawn. He was standing when I came in, not performing busyness, just standing. He looked the same. Maybe a little sharper around the edges. The kind of man who got more precise with age instead of softer.

"Elina." He gestured to the chair across from his desk.

We sat. He didn't ask about Leroy. He didn't say *it's been so long* or *I heard things weren't easy.* He just slid a contract across the desk and waited.

Senior Logistics Coordinator. Salary that made me blink once before I controlled my face. Full benefits. Scope of work that matched exactly what I was capable of, not what I'd been doing for the last three years.

I read every line. Every clause. Every sub-paragraph.

He didn't rush me. He poured two glasses of water and pushed one toward me without comment.

When I reached the signature line, I held the pen for just a moment. My hand remembered February. The refinancing stack. *Just the highlighted parts.*

I took a breath. Read the line one more time.

Then I signed.

"Welcome back," Kingston said. Just that.

I stood, and he stood, and for a second the room was very quiet in a way that had nothing to do with sound.

"Thank you," I said. My voice came out level. I was grateful for that.

In the hallway, a man fell into step beside me. Mid-thirties, quick eyes, a coffee cup in each hand.

"Marcus Webb," he said. "Chief of Staff. The good coffee is in the second-floor kitchen, not the eleventh—the machine up here is purely decorative. Conference Room B has a broken thermostat, so bring a layer. And the printer by the east wall jams every Tuesday without fail. Nobody knows why. We've stopped asking."

I looked at him.

He shrugged. "First days are a lot. Figured you'd rather have the real information."

Something loosened in my chest. Just slightly. Just enough.

"Second floor," I said. "Got it."

---

Across the city, Leroy woke up cold.

The heat was off. The water ran lukewarm for thirty seconds and then went icy. He called my name before he remembered.

Kehlani was in the kitchen in yesterday's clothes, her coat—the one I'd aimed for—draped over a chair, still stained. She was staring at the refrigerator like it had personally offended her.

"There's nothing ready," she said. "There's nothing *prepared.*"

Leroy called my phone. It rang through. He called again. Voicemail.

From down the hall, Margaret's voice came thin through the closed door. "Leroy. Leroy, I need—"

Kehlani picked up her phone and started scrolling.

Leroy stood in the cold kitchen and looked at the empty counter where the meatloaf bowl used to be.

Neither of them moved toward Margaret's room.
