Chapter 2

The mediation room was smaller than I'd expected. Gray walls. A long table. Windows that looked out onto nothing but another building's brick face.

I sat with my hands folded in my lap. I'd worn a navy dress—high neck, long sleeves, no jewelry except my wedding band. I looked exactly like what Davis's attorney would expect: subdued, compliant, ready to cooperate.

Across the table, Davis sat in his charcoal suit. Richard Crane beside him, briefcase open, documents arranged in precise stacks. Anya wasn't there. Smart. Her presence would've made the optics messy.

The mediator, a tired-looking woman named Patricia Holt, reviewed her notes. "Mrs. Brooks, you've agreed to record a public apology as part of the settlement terms. Is that correct?"

"Yes," I said quietly.

Davis adjusted his cufflinks. That tell. The one that meant he thought he'd already won.

Richard Crane slid a printed statement across the table. "We've prepared language for you. It addresses the false accusations, acknowledges the harm caused to Mr. Brooks's reputation, and expresses appropriate remorse."

I picked up the paper. Read it slowly.

I, Sloan Warren Brooks, acknowledge that I made unfounded accusations against my husband...

I set it down.

"I'd prefer to speak from the heart," I said.

Richard frowned. "Mrs. Brooks, we need to ensure the language is legally precise—"

"I'll cover everything in your statement," I said. "I just want it to sound like me. Not a script."

Patricia looked between us. "That's reasonable. Mr. Crane, if Mrs. Brooks addresses all the required points, the exact wording is her choice."

Richard hesitated, then nodded.

Davis leaned back in his chair. Satisfied.

They set up the camera on a tripod. Richard opened his laptop and started the livestream link—some platform I'd never heard of, probably chosen because it looked official and would archive the video permanently.

"Whenever you're ready, Mrs. Brooks," Patricia said.

I smoothed my dress. Looked directly into the camera.

The red light blinked on.

"My name is Sloan Warren Brooks," I said. My voice was calm. Clear. "I'm recording this statement today as part of divorce mediation proceedings with my husband, Davis Brooks. I've been asked to apologize for harm I caused to his reputation. So I'm going to tell you exactly what I'm apologizing for."

Davis straightened.

"I'm apologizing," I continued, "for not speaking sooner. For the years I stayed silent while my husband controlled every dollar I earned, isolated me from friends, and convinced me that asking questions about hotel charges and late nights was paranoia."

Richard's hand moved toward the laptop.

"I'm apologizing," I said, pulling a folder from my bag, "for not documenting this properly the first time."

I held up a photograph. My face, three years ago. Bruising along my left cheekbone, split lip.

"February fourteenth, twenty-twenty-one. Davis didn't like the restaurant reservation I'd made. I went to Lenox Hill emergency. Told them I'd slipped on ice."

Another photograph.

"June ninth, twenty-twenty-two. Fractured wrist. I'd questioned a charge from a jewelry store. He said I was accusing him of lying."

"Sloan—" Davis stood.

"Sit down, Mr. Brooks," Patricia said sharply.

I kept going.

"I'm apologizing for not recognizing that my husband's affair with Anya Meyer—which began approximately eighteen months ago based on credit card records I've compiled—was a pattern, not an isolated incident. For not understanding sooner that the problem wasn't me."

I pulled out bank statements. Highlighted sections.

"These show systematic transfers from our joint account to a separate account I had no access to. Sixty-three thousand dollars over two years. I'm apologizing for not hiring a forensic accountant earlier."

Davis lunged for the camera.

Richard grabbed his arm. "Don't—the feed is live—"

"I'm apologizing," I said, my voice steady even as Davis struggled against his own attorney, "for believing that staying silent was the same as keeping the peace. For thinking that if I just tried harder, loved better, asked for less, things would change."

I looked directly into the lens.

"I'm apologizing to myself. For every time I explained away the cruelty. For every bruise I covered with makeup. For every friend I stopped calling because Davis said they were dramatic. For shrinking myself small enough that maybe he'd finally be satisfied."

Patricia was staring at me.

"But I'm done apologizing to him," I said. "Davis Brooks is a man who uses lawyers and social standing the way he used his fists—to make sure no one fights back. So I'm fighting back. Everything I've said here is documented. Timestamped. Verified. And if you're watching this, you're watching a woman who refused to disappear quietly."

I reached forward and ended the recording myself.

The room was completely silent.

Then Richard's laptop started chiming. Notification after notification.

He looked at the screen. His face went white.

"It's been shared," he said quietly. "Eleven thousand times. In four minutes."

Davis turned to me. His expression was something I'd never seen before.

Fear.

"You just destroyed yourself," he said.

I stood. Gathered my folder.

"No," I said. "I destroyed you."

I walked out.

Behind me, Richard was already on his phone, his voice tight and urgent.

I took the elevator down. Stepped onto the street.

Snow was falling again. Heavier now.

I pulled out my phone.

The video was everywhere.
