Chapter 3

Maverick's Instagram was a Paris highlight reel. Champagne flutes against the Eiffel Tower at sunset. A table at Le Jules Verne with the city glittering below. Ariya in a red dress, laughing at something off-camera. I scrolled through it once, on my lunch break, then set my phone face-down on my desk and went back to work.

Emerson and I stayed late every night that week. The office emptied out around six, and by seven it was just the two of us, the hum of the heating system, and the glow of our laptop screens. He'd commandeered a small conference room and turned it into what he called our 'war room.' Papers spread across the table. Sticky notes on the glass walls. A whiteboard covered in names and dates and arrows connecting them.

'Look at this,' he said on the third night, turning his laptop toward me. On the screen was a corporate registration document for a shell company called Meridian Holdings LLC. The filing date was April 2019. 'Now look at this.' He pulled up a second document—a city contract award announcement for a luxury residential development in Hudson Yards. Same date. Same parties. Creed Ferguson's signature on the approval memo.

I leaned closer, scanning the text. 'Meridian Holdings is listed as the primary contractor,' I said slowly. 'But I've never heard of them.'

'Because they don't exist,' Emerson said. 'Not as a real company. It's a pass-through. Money comes in from the city, flows through Meridian, and ends up in accounts tied to Ferguson family trusts.' He pulled up a third document—wire transfer records his federal contact had obtained. The amounts were staggering. 'This is just one project. If the pattern holds across the other contracts you flagged, we're looking at millions.'

I sat back in my chair, the weight of it settling over me. 'How many contracts?'

'At least six that I can confirm so far.' He rolled up his sleeves—I'd noticed he always did that when he was working through something complicated—and reached for another file. 'I need you to cross-reference these dates against the public announcements. If the timing lines up the way I think it does, we have him.'

I pulled my laptop closer and opened the city records database. We worked in silence for the next two hours, the only sounds the click of keys and the occasional rustle of paper. At one point Emerson stood and stretched, then disappeared into the break room. He came back with two mugs of tea.

'You don't have to do this,' I said quietly, accepting the mug. 'You're risking a lot.'

He sat down across from me. 'So are you.'

'It's different. This is my life. You don't owe me anything.'

He looked at me for a long moment, and something in his expression made my chest tighten. 'I know,' he said. Then he turned back to his laptop, and we kept working.

By the time we finished that night, we had cross-referenced all six contracts. Every single one followed the same pattern. Shell company. Kickback. Ferguson signature. The evidence was undeniable.

'I'll send this to my contact at the federal prosecutor's office tomorrow,' Emerson said, saving the files to an encrypted drive. 'They'll want to verify independently, but this is enough to open an investigation.'

I nodded, touching the gold bracelet on my wrist. My mother's bracelet. The one I wore when I needed to remember who I was.

'Thank you,' I said.

Emerson met my eyes. 'We're not done yet.'

Maverick came home on a Thursday afternoon, tanned and smug. He dropped his suitcase in the foyer and called out, 'I'm back.'

I was in the kitchen, making coffee. 'Welcome home,' I said, not looking up.

He walked in, glanced around, and froze. His eyes landed on the umbrella leaning against the counter—black, simple, definitely not his. He picked it up slowly, turning it over in his hands.

'Whose is this?' he asked, his tone carefully casual.

'A friend's,' I said, pouring my coffee.

'What friend?'

'Emerson. From work. He left it here last week when it was raining.'

Maverick set the umbrella down, but his hand lingered on it. 'Emerson,' he repeated. 'You've mentioned him before.'

'Have I?' I took a sip of coffee, meeting his eyes over the rim of the mug.

My phone buzzed on the counter. A text notification lit up the screen. *Emerson: Got confirmation from the prosecutor's office. They're moving forward.*

I didn't pick up the phone. I let the notification sit there, visible.

Maverick's jaw tightened. 'Who is he?'

'A colleague,' I said. 'A friend. Does it matter?'

'You're spending a lot of time with him.'

I set my mug down and looked at him—really looked at him. 'I thought we were doing our own thing,' I said, my voice perfectly level. 'Isn't that what you wanted?'

He stared at me. Something flickered behind his eyes—panic, maybe, or the first real stirring of possessiveness. His mouth opened, then closed. He picked up the umbrella again, gripping it tighter than necessary.

'That's different,' he said finally.

'How?'

He didn't answer. He set the umbrella down, turned, and walked out. I heard the bedroom door close.

I picked up my phone and read Emerson's message again. Then I deleted it and finished my coffee.

Maverick thought he could have everything—the affair, the wife, the control. He was about to learn how wrong he was.
