Chapter 2

The second photo arrived on a Tuesday.

I was at the kitchen table with my laptop open, pretending to work on a freelance project I'd stopped caring about months ago. My phone lit up. Unknown number. I picked it up.

A woman in a flannel shirt. Blue plaid. Tate's. The one I'd washed and folded three days ago. Her hair was loose over one shoulder. She was smiling at the camera like she'd just won something.

Behind her: our bedroom. The blue-gray wallpaper I'd chosen myself. The lamp I'd found at an estate sale. The window with the view of the neighbor's oak tree.

I zoomed in. The photo was recent. The leaves outside the window were still green.

I took a screenshot. I logged the number. I added the file to the archive folder and closed the phone.

My tea had gone cold. I drank it anyway.

---

The third message came four days later.

This time it was a screenshot. A text thread between Tate and someone saved in his phone as "V."

*She has no idea,* Tate had written. *She never will.*

Below that: *You're sure about the timeline?*

*Positive,* Violette had replied. *Everything's on track.*

I read it twice. Then I saved it. I didn't respond. I didn't block the number. I didn't call Tate's phone and scream until my voice broke.

I just added it to the folder and made another cup of tea.

Sylvia texted me that night. *How are you holding up?*

*Fine,* I wrote back.

*Maeve.*

*I'm fine. Really.*

She didn't believe me. I didn't care. I wasn't fine. But I was something better. I was focused.

---

Tate came home Friday night with takeout and a smile. He kissed my cheek and set the bags on the counter.

"Thai okay? I got your usual."

"Perfect," I said.

We ate at the table. He talked about work. A difficult client. A project running behind schedule. I nodded in the right places. I asked follow-up questions. I was good at this. I'd been good at it for years.

Then he set his fork down and leaned back in his chair.

"So," he said. "I need to talk to you about something."

I looked up. "Okay."

He pulled a folder from his bag and spread papers across the table. Term sheets. Projections. Investment agreements with logos I didn't recognize.

"The company's closing a deal," he said. "It's big. Once-in-a-decade kind of big. But we need bridge capital to finalize it. Five hundred thousand."

I looked at the papers. I didn't touch them.

"Five hundred thousand," I repeated.

"I know it's a lot." He leaned forward. His eyes locked on mine. Steady. Unblinking. "But the return is projected at triple that within eighteen months. It's a sure thing, Maeve. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't."

I picked up one of the sheets. I scanned the numbers. They looked real. They probably were real — just not real for this.

"Who's the counterparty?" I asked.

"Meridian Capital Group. They're based in Vancouver."

"And the deal structure?"

"Equity stake with a buyback clause. It's all in the term sheet."

I nodded slowly. I set the paper down. "When do you need an answer?"

"Two weeks," he said. "Maybe less."

"Okay," I said. "Let me think about it."

He smiled. He reached across the table and squeezed my hand. "Thank you. I know it's a big ask. But I promise, this is going to change everything for us."

I smiled back. "I know."

He didn't see the way my hand stayed perfectly still under his.

---

That night, I waited until he was asleep. Then I opened my laptop and pulled up the monitoring software.

The emails came first. A thread between Tate and someone named "J. Whitman" — except the metadata showed the recipient's real address: violette.lane.personal@gmail.com.

*Settlement confirmed at 500k,* Tate had written. *Provision for the Barnes family heir. She'll agree. She always does.*

I scrolled further. Another email. A wire transfer confirmation. Fifteen thousand dollars. Sent three weeks ago to an account under the name Kane Dixon. In Tate's notes, a single line: *V's logistics.*

I wrote the name down on a Post-it. Kane Dixon. I circled it twice.

Then I opened a new tab and started searching.

Kane Dixon. Seattle. Criminal record. Three arrests. Two convictions. Petty theft. Assault. A Facebook profile with photos of a truck. A new truck. A Ford F-150 with temporary plates.

I zoomed in on one of the photos. The date stamp: three weeks ago.

I sat back. I stared at the screen.

Tate had bought another man a truck. With our money. For Violette's logistics.

I closed the laptop. I made tea. I sat at the kitchen table in the dark and let myself feel it for exactly five minutes.

Then I opened my phone and texted Derek Paulson.

*I need to hire you. Can we meet tomorrow?*

He replied within two minutes. *10 a.m. My office. What's this about?*

I typed one word.

*Everything.*
